Backstory: Meran Garrow was born into a wealthy family, the only son of a lord who ruled over his city of order and prosperity. His father, who liked to hunt, was mortally wounded by a boar in one of his many journeys out into the dangerous wilds outside the city gates. The young Meran, now a Lord himself, chose to never leave civilization and die like his father did. Soon he was married, and not much later was expecting his first child.
But one night, as several guards left their post at the Eastern wall to go drinking, as a servant forgot to close and lock the side entrance of the manor, as Meran's wife stayed up late to wait for him to return home from visiting the captain of the watch, a creature of the wild entered the town for the first time in decades.
Meran came home to a bloodbath. Guards, servants, his wife and unborn child, all slaughtered by an enormous black wolf with a gray stripe. Stinking of blood and decay, the beast looked deeply into his eyes for several seconds before it ran past the petrified Meran and back into the wild. Not ten minutes later Meran was stepping on dirt and grass, his city behind him instead of around him for the first time, carrying a bag of supplies, wearing his father's hunting gear and the long-dead lord's bow.
Two years later, he continues searching for the wolf, killing any beasts he finds along the way. Stories are told in inns and around campfires of the crazed lord, young with long dark hair and a gray stripe, searching for the beast with eyes like his. Being spotted while on journeys is seen as a good omen to travelers who are assured by the Hunting Lord's presence that no creatures of the wild will be attacking them any time soon.
