I can't really write without music, but that's largely because I can't think without music. No real "soundtrack" though.

    Music I listen to inspire

    -Rush
    -Pink Floyd
    -System of a Down
    -Queen
    -Soda Stereo
    -Rhapsody of fire
    -Sonic Youth
    -Scorpions
    -Rolling Stones
    -Dream Theater
    -AC/DC
    -Etc.

Soundtracks I like to use on RPG

    -Shin Megami Tensei series
    -Star Wars movies
    -Lord of the Ring movies
    -Star Ocean
    -Final Fantasy
    -Dragon Quest
-Tales of series (Despite I don't like the series, teh soundtrack is awesome)
    -Fate/ Stay Night novels
    -Tsukihime novels
    -Ever17 novels
-Higurashi no naku koro ni novels
-Umineko no naku koro ni novels.
    -etc.

Once it would have been a miracle.
Things that happen more than once aren't miracles anymore

Depends on the scene and the character, but generally I do love to listen to music while typing up a post for a roleplay.

I concur with most that writing a post is made somewhat easier with music playing in the background. For the same reasons as when studying, I think you should avoid lyrical music and stick to classical orchestral. It's just the right amount of inspiring without overtaking your thought processes with lyrics.

As for RPs, I've never really used backing music although I do plan to in my upcoming sci-fi NRP. Music is a huge love of mine and I'm looking forward to the chance to share that with my fellow RPs while it also serves a functional purpose; tone setting.
Why do you ask what, when the delicious question is when?

Generally speaking, I go for more orchestral-style music unless I find the lyrics fit things well.

For example, in an RP that I am running right now, Iron Hearts, the song in the beginning is actually important as to how the rest of the plot will be happening. >.>

I love it too. I can't really write anything without music, heck, I even have my own roleplaying playlist on my Ipod.

Either way, when writing I mostly listen to calm and soothing music like classical, game or movie soundtracks or melodic electro. 17tumba anyone?

I actually can't concentrate on writing with music in the background though I can understand how it might be good for mood setting. Actually I often shush people talking too loudly near me if I'm working on a really involved reply, haha

I used to add snippets of songs into my posts all the time, but I've gotten out of the habit. Sometimes if I reference a song in a post I'll attach a link, or if there's just a particularly awesome moment that just needs to be lamented. As for writing while listening to music in the background, that's really the only way I can write. In fact, as I'm writing this I'm listening to music :P

Most of the time i listen to music or watch a movie scene before writing. It helps create ideas in my head :P
