Wheel of Time Roleplay--A Cruel And Bitter Mercy--OOC Thread

This will be a reboot of a game I tried to start a few months back but which did not take of, I however do not like to just copy paste and earlier game so it will be the same concept but with some changes. This RPG is set in the Wheel of Time setting ca 200 years before the start of the books. If you are interested in playing just make a character and join up.

    *****

Three thousand years have passed since the breaking of the world, three thousand years since insane male channelers nearly destroyed the human race and all of civilization leaving nothing but burning rubble and scattered survivors, three thousand years since saidin the male half of the One Power, the very energy that drives the Wheel of Time was tainted by the Dark One's counterstrike, condemning every male channeler to madness and death. Civilization is thriving again, the world is filled with nations, with marvelous cities, peaceful villages and sprawling empires. This world, the third age is far from the utopia that where rumored to exist in the Age of Legends but humanity have risen from the rubble and rebuild.

The world is not without dangers, as always far in the north the blight threaten and the inhuman servants of the Dark One come in hordes to attack the Borderlands every so often and if the proud Bordermen did not stand their ground the world would be filled with screams and terrors, on a more mundane level there are always some nation squabbling with another, some haughty lord wanting more land and attacking his neighbors, no the world is not a safe place, but it is stable, for the most part, and filled with hope.

Allot of the stability of the world, and it's hopes and ironically also it's woes comes from the same place, the White Tower, a magnificent building located in the middle of the island city of Tar Valon. This Tower is home to the Aes Sedai an ancient order of female channelers. Many commoners fear the Aes Sedai and their powers, calling them witches, perhaps in some ways they are right to fear, but through it all the Aes Sedai dedicate their lives to the betterment of the world and the fight against the Shadow. Though political maneuvering they steer the world this way or that, not always in a beneficial way but always with the best of intentions.

Perhaps the Aes Sedai's most important task however is not guiding kings and councilmen, no it is preventing a new breaking. Channeling, the ability to touch the One Power is a blessing in a girl, it will give her perfect health and a life spanning centuries as well as power beyond what most people would dream of, but when a man is born with the gift of channeling it is a curse. Male channelers still go mad, and sooner or late no matter how well his intentions or high his morals he will begin to destroy with the powers he have been blessed with. Even a single insane channeler can burn whole towns to ash or boil a lake to nothing. All Aes Sedai but in particularly those of the Red Ajah dedicate themselves to finding and gentling men who can channel. Gentling destroys a male channeler's ability to touch the One Power, but it is a cruel process not only horrifically painful but it also leaves the victim in a deeply depressed state, few men who have been gentled live more than a few years, they either commit suicide or their bodies just give out on them as they loose the will to live. Once someone have touched the One Power they can not live without it. Yes what is done to male channelers are a cruel fate, but what alternative are there, though many of these men are innocents, one day they will destroy and burn everything that have been rebuilt unless they are stopped.

Now a group of Aes Sedai is sent out hunting after a man who can channel, and you character will be a part of this hunting party. You can be an Aes Sedai out to do a grim duty, or perhaps a proud Warder. Perhaps you will rather play a sly merchant who is paid to be a guide for the hunting expedition, or a wise Ogier out to observe the works of the White Tower for a book he is writing, or perhaps you are a common soldier just trying to earn enough coin so his family can eat, that is up to you, but whoever your character is he or she will embark on a journey to do a terrible deed, a cruel deed, but still a deed of utmost necessity. It is a cruel mercy that is given to male channelers, but it is the only choice open if they are not to be allowed to break the world all over again, it is time to do your duty to eh White Tower.

    *****

Welcome to this RPG. Like I said this is sett in the Wheel of Time setting. You do need some experience with WoT to play but you do not need to have read all the books and be an expert, if you have read one or two books, or played the computer game, or perhaps played the D20 RPG game then you will know enough. If you google Wheel of Time you should also be able to read up on enough to play on the internet. As long as you know the basic concepts of the setting you can play.

This is a high casual game. It do not matter if you make spelling and grammar errors but I would like the game to be somewhat character driven, also I do not expect enormous posts, one paragraph is enough, but try to avoid one liners.

Try to stay as true to the setting as possible, you can play any character that would fit in the Wheel of Time setting and which would have a reason to be on a hunting party that is going after a male channeler, but if something do not exist in the books you can not play it. Also we are playing 200 years before the start of the books so your character can not be a part of an organization which do not exist before the books start.

You can play as many characters as you wish and as you can play with some regularity. Do not make invincible characters, everyone, even a strong channeler have flaws, and flaws is often what makes a game interesting. Having multiple characters can however be a good way to experience several facets of the story.

Let me see what other rules, well the basic ones be polite to other players, take all OOC talk in the OOC thread and if there is a conflict then solve with outside of the game. If you are leaving the game or is going to be absent for more than two weeks I would appreciate it if you dropped me a line about it. I will generally not take over another player's character but if I one player who do not respond is holding up the entire story then I might use their character just to end the current scene as to get the game moving again.

If there are any questions please do not hesitate to ask them either here or via PM.

Two hundred years... that would make it... uh... a long time before the Aiel war, right? Sorry, my knowledge of WoT is a bit rusty... In any case I am very interested in joining... Uh... Would it be possible to RP as a reincarnation of one of the heroes who are summoned by the Horn of Valere?

Yes it is a long time before the Aiel War, that happens about 18 years or so before the start of the books. You can play one of the heroes of the horn, however he or she will probably not know who they are as when they are incarnate they forget, you might have some exceptional skill, or fleeing memories in dreams but that is about it, Birgitte is a bit of a special case, but yes as long as you can explain why your character is at Tar Valon and is working with a group of Aes Sedai to capture a male channeler you can be one of the heroes of the horn.

    Name: Lavena Maher

Nationality: Levana is from the city of Nassad in Tarabon.

Appearance: Levana is tall and beautiful, she have a oval face with large light brown eyes that look like dark honey in the right light, her nose is thin and lightly upturned, her lips are full and often split into a winning smile. Levana have pale blond hair in a multitude of braids, the braids are decorated with red garnet breads at the end and fall to the small of her back, the braids are also often arranged into some sort of elaborate up do. Levana have very pale skin and she looks delicate. Levana favors silk dresses, usually clingy ones that show off her chest, she do however not have the world's most shapely body being shaped a bit like a flagpole with little in the ways of chest or hips but there is some, she likes to wear costly, tasteful jewelry and is particularly fond of rubies and garnets. Levana usually is not seen without her red fringed shawl and she often wear a red Trabon face veil which covers her beautiful features. Levana have a deep, melodious voice and caries herself with an air of authority. Levana have the ageless look of an Aes Sedai, she is closer to 80 years old but she looks young, impossible to put an age to, but young.

Personality: Levana want to help keep the world safe, that is all she wants, she is not a cruel woman, in fact she is loving and kind, but because of the Old Blood memories she know better than anyone how much damage a male channeler can do and they have to be taken down. Levana do not hate men like some of her Ajah do, in fact she do from time to time take a lover, nothing to serious or long term off course, Levana is no fool she know she will remain young while her lover age and die and she do not wish to go through that, but if she see a man she want and who want here she might invite him to her bed, no Levana do not hate men, she do not really hate male channelers either but she is fanatical about finding them and brining them in, another breaking can never be allowed to happen, though she will not abuse a male channeler prisoner once he is under control, she do not have much mercy for them either. Levana is intelligent though she allow her temper to get the better of her at times, she is a passionate woman and Aes Sedai training have not managed to tame that. Levana love to read, some say she should have been Brown, she have an easy smile and a beautiful laugh which she often uses. Levana appear sure of herself an confident but constant nightmare of the breaking of the world through her Old Blood memories have left a streak of fear in her, she is terrified of another breaking, but she will never let others see this fear that live in her and she usually appear to be friendly but serene.

Bio: Levana was born in Nassad in Tarabon to wealthy parents, her father was a silk merchant her mother a homemaker. Young Levana grew up with all the benefits of wealth, she had a tutor that taught her about history, mathematics and politics. Levana never wanted for nothing as her parents where able to provide her with fine clothes and good food. Levana also had loving parents who was attentive and kind and she had two older brothers and one younger sister, she had a childhood most could envy her, the only thing that was a problem for her was the nightmares.

Tarabon is an old nation with and old people as such having the Old Blood, or memories from one's ancestors long dust is not unheard of, and Levana have this blessing. Sometimes having the Old Blood was a boon, some fleeting memory from an ancestor might help her learn a skill faster or at times it made her understand some part of history even better than her old tutor, but with the good came the bad and Levana was often plagued by nightmares, fuzzy dreams of death and destruction. Like most with the Old Blond even the newer memories where not very clear and it was often hard to separate what was real memories and what where just fantasy and the same was true with the dreams that Levana after a while understood where memories from the breaking of the world, the dreams where fuzzy but they where always the same, a landscape pock marked with the scars left by insane male channelers, and herself standing on a bleak hill trying to talk some sense into a young man with black hair before he turned and incinerated her where she stood. Levana's parents where very proud of their daughter, not many knew about the Old Blood, but those who knew said it was a sign of ancient heritage, for the young silk trader's daughter however to many nights where she woke up screaming made the gift of ancestral memory more a curse than a blessing.

By the time Levana was sixteen years old she did not know how many times she had dream that awful dream and she decided that the Wheel had to have some meaning with giving her that memory from that long dead woman, perhaps she was meant to help prevent something like that from ever happening again. Levana told her parents she wanted to go to Tar Valon to be tested, to see if she could become an Aes Sedai, both her mother and her father said no, they had plans for their daughter, a nobleman's son had asked for her hand in marriage and they wanted her to accept. Levana was torn, she wanted to be a good daughter, and life as a noblewoman might be easier and she did not even know if she would be accepted at the White Tower, it would be wiser to heed her parent's wishes and marry the young man they had selected for her. Levana however could not get the feeling that she was meant to help the world in a way only an Aes Sedai could out of her head so despite what was wise she sneak out of her room one evening and taking only a few coins and her horse she went to Tar Valon.

Levana was so nervous when she finally got to the island city, if the Tower would not accept her she had to ride back home and accept her parent's ire, but as luck would have it once she was tested it was found she could learn to channel and she was written into the novice books. Levana spent seven years as a novice and six as an accepted, she was a dutiful student and she never faltered, she knew she wanted to be Aes Sedai more than anything else in the world. because of her Old Blood the Brown Ajah hoped Levana would choose them once she was raised to the shawl, they would love to study her more, but for the young silk trader's daughter there where only one choice for an Ajah, the Red. Male channelers where a menace that had to be stopped and Levana wanted to dedicate her life to do just that.

Levana had only worn the shawl for two weeks when she was sent with an expedition to take down a male channeler for the first time, a young Andorian soldier who had been seen hurling a fireball after an enemy on the battlefield before he ran and tried to flee, obviously in as much shock over what he had done as his fellow solders and commanding officers where. Levana's group spent two months hunting down that young man before they caught him, the young Aes Sedai remember being sad over how young the prisoner was, he could not have seen more than nineteen name days. The whole way back to Tar Valon the young prisoner Rimar, cried and begged for mercy, but he found none and as Levana stood in the Traitor's Court and watched Rimar be gentled she she that even if what happened to the boy was terrible it was necessary.

Levana have worn the shawl for about fifty years now an in that time she have helped bring in fifteen male channeler, two of those times she have been leading the expedition that went after the men and one of the men she have helped bring to the Tower was a false dragon. Levana have a rising star among the Red Ajah, she is known to be uncompromising and merciless when it comes to male channelers and for getting the job done. Levana enjoy her job, it is not that she enjoy hurting the poor men she bring in, she do feel compassion for them and the horrible thing they have to face in Aes Sedai hands but she know that unless they get hunted down then each and every one of them might take hundreds if not thousands of lives. Levana have a little black book with all the names of the men she have helped to capture and she know that those fifteen could have destroyed a nation if left to their own devices, nothing can convince Levana that what she is doing is not the will of the Light itself and that she is doing good by hunting down men fool enough to channel.

Channeling Ability: Levana is fairly strong, she is among the top hundred strongest at the Tower though she is far from the top. Levana is strongest in Spirit, her second strongest element is Fire something which is rare for a woman. Levana is of decent strength with Air but are weak in Water and Earth. Levana do know the secret Red Ajah weave to find male weave residues.

Talents: Levana have the Old Blood strongly, every now and again she will get a fleeting memory from some long dead ancestor. Most with the Old Blood can only remember from ancestors which have lived in the current age, but Levana have a recurring, terrible dream where she see herself be killed by a male channeler during the breaking of the world, this is the reason why she choose the Red Ajah. The memories Levana get is jumbled and fleeting and usually is no more than a feeling of having been a place before even if she have never set foot there or just a short flash of a memory in her mind, she can not bring these memories forth by will, they come when they feel like it.

Skills: Levana have a decent education, she is good with mathematics, she know a decent amount about history. Levana speaks the Old Tongue fluently and she also know a little Ogier. Levana was taught how to do trade by her father, and she is also a decent politician and know how to maneuver in White Tower politics but she is far from a master at it. Levana is very good at playing stones, one of her favorite pastimes.

Equipment: Levana had well furnished quarters at the Tower, she have a large wardrobe with beautiful red dresses. Levana have some jewelry and she do like to trow on a pretty bauble or two. Levana own a large collection of books, she have a portrait of her family painted by a master artist and various odds and ends in her quarters. Levana own a light brown mare named Cottonball, a good quality belt knife and various things like a sewing kit, a bed roll and other things needed when on the road. Levana have a beautiful carved wood and marble stones set which usually is set up for a game on a table at her quarters, she also have her little black book with the names of male channelers she have helped to capture.

Notes: Levana have a grad niece who have just come to the White Tower as a novice and she is finding it hard to not dote on the child, she know that the girl need to go though her training by herself but Levana have found that she have been lonely as of late and she is hoping that her niece will become Aes Sedai so she will at least have one family member close by, and a family member with as long a life expectancy as herself that is. The girl's name is Noma Maher and Levana is following her education and progress with great interest.

    Name: Isein Teverel

Nationality: Isein is a natural-born Shienaran, from the village Camron Caan, though he does not live there now. He hasn't for several years. Sadly, he knows nothing of his family or friends. As far he is concerned, he has neither.

Appearance: Isein stands head and shoulders above the local Cairhienens, his jet-black locks spilling messily down to his neck. His face is cracked and wrinkled, aged prematurely from what he has endured in his life, though his amber eyes shine with a youthful luster that betrays his ancient features. His thin lips, in accordance with the rest of his too-dry skin, are cracked throughout, no matter how he may try to wet them. Covered by the tattered green overcoat that he's had since his self-exile, Isein's chest is covered in scars and burns, from the time he was learning this accursed Power of his. The cuffs of his coat are entirely frayed, revealing half of his once-muscular forearms. His bony fingers end in elongated, jagged nails, from not having the time to trim. His trousers, a heavily-stained tan affair, are relatively undamaged when compared to his coat, just the bottom hems frayed to nothingness. He wears a once-sturdy pair of boots, now practically made of holes, with more toes poking out than not.
Personality: Isein keeps to himself, to save himself heartbreak, and others physical pain; he learned quickly that anyone he meets ends up caring for him and getting burned - sometimes not just emotionally - or they learn who, or what he is, and try to turn him in. He used to be friendly, but years of running from everyone have worn that kindness thin. He distrusts all, and tries not to stay in one place for more than a few months. He has, however, learned to be somewhat self-sufficient, both in city streets and in the wilderness.

Bio: Isein was born to a Shienaran soldier, and his housewife. He early learned the tools of his father's trade, becoming proficient in sword, spear, and bow. He had many good friends in his early adulthood, practicing their skills, and making games of their wooden swordfights. All believed, as did he, that Isein would follow in his father's footsteps, becoming a warrior of Shienar. The Pattern, however, would seem to have other plans for him. His friend Mahacal - a younger lad, with fire in his spirit and a spring in his step - had taken Isein out hunting to try to bring him out of a nightmare-filled depression and sickness he'd been in for several weeks. An hour or two in to the trip, the sickness was taking quite a toll on Isein, leaving him tired and out of breath. He struggled to press on, though, if for nothing else than to please his old friend. Not long after, Mahacal had spotted a stag, and a large one at that. He pointed the beast out to Isein, so as to give him the glory of downing the creature. Isein had trouble drawing an arrow, his sickness leaving him weak. His inability to use even the weak bow he'd been given infuriated him, just a month ago, there was not a boy of his village that could match his skill with a bow. Why now was he inable to fire even a child's bow; the strength of which would surely not have killed the stag, probably not even cast the arrow all the way to the bloody beast. He hated how weak he was, and felt the fiery strength of anger and rage in the back of his mind. With what seemed the last of his strength, giving in to the hate and anger, he drew the arrow has hard as he could. The last thing he remembered was the bow snapping under his strength, and the world around him exploding.
When he came to, an area roughly a mile around had been blackened and burned to the ground, and the smell of burned flesh permeating the air. The sickness had thankfully subsided, resting now as a twang of pain in the far corner of his mind. Though he was happy for this, he was quickly worried for his friend. Looking around, there was no immediate sight of him. That was some small consolation; there was a chance he successfully retreated from the blast. Isein could, however, see the remnants of the stag they had been hunting; nothing more than a charred body, unfit for even rats to eat. Isein could not, for the life of him, think of what could have possibly caused the explosion. The cause, he decided, was not important, and he started back for home. After a few minutes, he tripped over something underfoot. Looking to see what it may be, he saw a scorched pair of boots, a burnt bow, and blackened once-red cloak covering a horrid-smelling mass. Isein feared for the worst, and turned the body over, to be repulsed by what he saw. The skin and meat had been burned off the face of his once-lively friend Mahacal, and his innards spilled on to the ground. Immediately, Isein retched and vomited his small lunch, both in disgust of the sight, and of the fact that his good friend was now dead, his body destroyed. Isein sat for another half an hour, trying to pay some sort of homage to his friend, mourning his mysterious death. He must, he thought, return to the village, and inform Mahacal's parents and friends.
Upon returning, the entire village seemed in panic; they had surely heard the explosion, and were clamoring to decide what to do. They were in such a panic that not a soul noticed him. He asked around, looking for his parents, and eventually an innkeeper pointed him to something of a meeting hall, wherein all the elders were gathered to discuss what should be done. Upon entering, all discussions ceased, and every soul within stared at him. Immediately his parents rushed to him, bringing him out of the hall, and back to their home. He related the story of what had happened, and his parents looked at one another with concern. Within ten minutes, they'd hurriedly gathered clothes to replace his scorched attire, and roughly a week's worth of supplies, along with a bow and a quiverfull of arrows. Speaking only words of courage and strength, they sent him along, southward, away from the village. Isein was so confused; what in the Light was going on? He was denied reentry to the village, and so took the only path for him, away from the only home he'd ever knew. After a day's travel, he stopped at a crossing, to ponder what all had happened. Why had his parents abandoned him, and why with such haste? What had caused the explosion, and why was he unharmed? Infuriated once more, he struck a boulder, trying anything to vent his anger. Upon making contact, his anger flared, and the world grew bright again. When he opened his eyes, the boulder was shattered, strewn about the forest that was behind it, and the ground was burnt black, nearby trees were aflame. With grim curiosity, he gave in to his anger willingly, and cast his hand in the opposite direction, fire billowing out from his open palm, reducing a signpost to cinders.
Isein was beginning to realize why everything had happened, what caused the explosion, and why he had been sick. I, Isein thought, a pit of sickness growing in his stomach, am a channeler. A male channeler.

Channeling Ability: Since his realization of his ability, Isein has read any book he could find on channeling, and related the Aes Sedai's five elements to what he sees and feels when channeling. He is strongest in Fire and Earth, and weak in all others. In practicing his ability, he has been willingly able to turn a half-mile area to cinders, or completely obliterate the five-foot remnants of some ancient watchtower.

Skills: Isein is a skilled warrior, able to best most opponents in single combat, whether using sword, pole, or bow. He can survive in the wilds, using his physical skills, enhanced by channeling. However, Isein has horrid interpersonal skills, unable to communicate even the most simple of phrases without repulsing or scaring whoever he's talking to.

Equipment: Isein carries little more than what he left his village with; the same clothes he's been wearing for atleast five years, the same bow, and the same quiver, with many of the same arrows. Through his self-taught skills of thievery, he has gained a coinpouch, with enough coin that he could stay at a scummy in for atleast a few days, while also getting himself some decent meals. He saves this money for emergencies, though, and will steal food when he can, or hunt it.

Isein is accepted, he is a very good character, the only thing I could nitpick on is that channeling illness that those that begin to channel without training get comes and go, it is not continuous, it comes last a few hoers and leaves and comes back the next time the individual, often without knowing it him or herself, tries to channel. Other than that your character is perfect.

I am going to start the IC thread for Isein, now the reason for this is that he is not where any of the other player characters are, the rest of the group will begin in Tar Valon while Isein is in Cairhien the way I understand it and I will solo GM for this character until he meet up with the rest of the party which for his sake we all hope will be a while. The rest of you just make your characters when you have the time and I will start the game for your at Tar Valon when you are all ready.
