The Merlin from the original Legends of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. No movie/television adaptations. Only the original source may be drawn upon for reference.

The original Source? Which original source? We have Scottland, Wales, and England to draw inspiration from. Pre-Arthurian Merlin may have been a Zeus export from Rome as an old guy with a pointy hat and stick, the god Wutan (Odin) or any number of "Original Legends of King Arthur" (I'm sort of just joking with you here, I don't mean to give you a hard time).

King Arthur, and Merlin, FYI, might be one and the same person. Thus, the battle could be Zeus vs Dumbledore, Odin vs Dumbledore, or "Some kind of wizard with a stick and sword vs Dumbledore".

Who would win in a fight with Merlin and Dumbledore being the combatants?
Dumbledore..... He drinks poison and lives.....

Alucard or Seras Victoria (At Full Vampire from the Ultimate series)?
"Hail them as the bane of Chaos, Fear them for they watch for Heresy"

"It will be through our blood and our faith that our survival will be assured, Sisters."
"What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?" - Paarthunax, Skyrim.
This is single line encompasses why i have a non-sexual appreciation of the Adepta Sorirtas. Through Great Effort, The sisters have acheived near incorruptibility without the use of massive genetic augmentation and mind-wipes. Through Iron Will, They have conquered their Human nature.

Ah, Merlin was possibly the Son of Satan. I doubt Dumbledore can out-cool that.

Clearly Harry potter would win, he would see the two fighting, and yell. "IT'S MY LIFE! " Jump out a window, and turn into a phoenix and fly away .

Would Dumbledore not also then be able to be considered Merlin with your specifications? After all, Dumbledore is a wizard with a stick and a sword (Godric Gryffindor's Sword, that is). They both also have long white beards and flowing robes.

No. There's actual speculation in the scholarly world that Merlin may just have been an invention by Celts and Saxons as being a god of their culture. ::shrug::

Dumbledore's just an ageless, but still non-deific mage.

Well, Merlin is the Wizard who did it. Dumbledore is the Wizard who did himself in.

    You do the math.

Technically, because of the convoluted myths involving Merlin, he is a powerful mage who never died. When it came time for him to "leave" this mortal coil, he simply faded away. LITERALLY.
