My son and his friends were in the acreage out back at night this last October and the boys were all like (yeah, valley girl style), "So, umm.. you guys got bear?"
My son says, "Yeah, black bears up the road a bit. They go for our neighbor's apples. But they're mostly higher elevation round about now."
"Yeah," says the boys and one of them looks around and grins. "How's bout cougar?"
"Oh yeah! on the ridge. It's got this funny deal with the coyotes, it takes the higher bit and the coyotes have the lower" (and apparently the elk have the even higher, because one of the boys rushed in an hour later and dragged us all out to listen to them)
"Very cool," says the group of boys, all seventeen and buff and cool outdoorsy types (only they're more geeky scientist types, which I find even more endearing). "What else you got?" asks one.
"I think we got some deer that hang around and we've seen some really big scat (yeah, scientist types, 'member?) which was either the neighbor's cow or a moose."
"moose?"
"Moose?"
MOOSE?"
"Dude, we're goin' inside."
"Yeah, see ya - gotta go inside. Holy crap."
"Crap, heh heh."
And so on and so forth. *L* But he still laughs about it to this day. All of two months later, because that's... yeah.. the coffee talking.
