Senior in high school. Saw it at the end of last year. Remembers almost nothing about it.
Basically you put in an expression in on one side (with a variable usually), a pattern somewhere else explaining the different 'x's (1,2,3,4,... or 1,2,4,8... etc), and how many 'x's of the pattern to dump in, and where to start (Like, from the 6th 'x' in the pattern to the 11th 'x' in the pattern). Pop said 'x's into the expression and find the total for all of them put together.
It annoys me that I know the symbols at work in this image but don't understand the joke.
