I suffered a stroke when I was three years old, after getting scarlet fever not too long after I had gotten a shot. At the time they thought I was going to be deaf, but no I was just hard-of-hearing. So they decided I was deaf and taught me sign language until I got a lot older, and they found out I could still hear and speak. Just my hearing is below average, so I tend to say things like "what" and "huh" a lot, or I take a few minutes to answer, not because I'm being rude. But because if I take a minute or so, I am usually able to figure out what people said through reading lips.

by the time I started talking my parents didn't really care so they had no idea what my first word was
