Once or twice. I had this one character that I loved. I wouldn't just copy and paste, I'd write it from scratch each time.
In Bleach RPs; yeah. I recycle characters, though for the most part, I just make new ones.

Why do you ask what, when the delicious question is when?
I pretty much only have 3 or 4 characters I play now, and reuse certain "catch all settings" when I'm creating, well, places. So... yes.
Thats pretty cool. I was curious to see if I was the only one who did that. I can create new characters but they dont have the attachment to the ones I use the most.
I had one character that I really recycled a lot earlier on - partially as an experiment to see what would happen to a character with more and more actual experiences (albeit constantly modified so that the history fit the setting and timeline and such), and partially to adapt to the forum I was in at that time, that was especially prone to dying very early on. I later deconstructed it, and it turned out to be one of the more fun and interesting ones I've done (if only because of the deconstruction).
I haven't done it in a while, either at all or almost at all, in favor of trying to create original or mostly original characters, personalities, abilities/backgrounds, etc. etc. It gives more possibilities that the same character, if I was RPing as I should, would not. I sometimes plan or do use a "trope," sometimes just a conflict or ideal, and play with it in different ways using different characters, but they're usually still unique.
If someone's playing with it, or trying to revive a character they wanted to RP with but never had much of a chance to - not just doing it out of pure laziness or the like - I think it's actually a very cool concept, and I may try to bring back a couple older characters later on, myself.
I don't think I have ever recycled a character.
I've always made new names, new history, different likes and dislikes. In Super-power type RPs, I have two abilities that I pretty much have adopted, but the character around those two abilities is completely different game to game.
Otherwise, every character I make is different from the next. Like Jorick, I like to try and incorporate some of the setting into the character's history, or in some cases (such as one of the RP's I'm in now), added directly to the history of the setting, that is intrinsic to the setting now will never be used afterwards.
I make my characters my way, and really can't bothered to give a damn if someone doesn't like it.
Just thought of something: I have recycled a character...once or twice, a long as time ago. Nothing however, since being here.

Well I do that a lot. I generally have different characters for different genres, since I would play it best that genre. One of my OCs, Yuuki, I recycle in Pokemon RPs with bits and pieces tweaked to fit it. So I recycle character with tweaks to history and stuff like that.
For me to recycle or generally reuse a character, usually it has to be in the same timeline and franchise or setting as when they originated. The problem is, I spend a lot of time on back story and making things lore appropriate that I oftentimes will just make an entirely new character rather than change the things from the original if the setting is too different. I like bringing back characters in sequel RPs, where it's a continuation. Other than that, I'd rather just make a new character. I'm not sure if it makes sense, but I find I'm not staying true to my creations if I change too much about them to fit another RP, and this is especially true for characters I really care about.
Another time I'll reuse a character is if an RP they were introduced in dies off quick, I'll bring them back in a similar RP so they can actually be established and be a part of a story. I have a few character sheets floating around just in case I run into an RP where I think they'd be perfect to get a chance to shine. But more often than not, my back stories are very specific to that RP they're in and I really rather not erase and rewrite huge swabs of multiple paragraph back stories for the reasons I stated before where it wouldn't feel like the character I envisioned to begin with. It's like an evil twin, or something.

Metaverse Characters.
A Metaverse Character is a character that jumps universes and stories, gaining experiences from each one to help "complete" themselves. It works pretty well when you're willing to retcon and get in RP's that last at least a couple months so you can truly glean experience out of it.
I've made variants of one character, but never outright used the same character.
