Oh my god!. That's what my character does!. For the longest time I didn't know what to call it!. Thank you!.

    Your welcome! I think?

The only issue with metaverse characters is when they're put into RP's with an extensive amount of lore and back story prior to their arrival. It can cause issues. Plus after a while you do need to put them down. They become inherently too powerful to play in most stories.

    Oh!
I didn't even know there was a term for that, but I'm not surprised. Thank you for the clarification. :]

Amnesia! Godhood! Amnesic God! The stuff of originality.
The rest of the RP could be all the other players trying to get rid of the character.

The amount of events piled into one background does tend to be too much packed into too little time, unless ones forces their character to age significantly (maybe). In an RP that lasts any significant length of time, there seems to be a tendency for a lot of events in an absurdly short amount of time (reminds me of an older thread where someone suggested changing time based on how long something would take/issues of time passing strangely and how to deal with it). I'm sure it's even worse for people that make complicated histories to start with.

No problem. Simply put: If a Metaverse is a world where several universes collide, than a Metaverse Character is...

Ding ding ding. That's essentially what will eventually stop a Metaverse character from being usable. "I was an admiral in this universe, and a star fighter in this one, and a master warrior in this one, and an assassin in this one..."

Yes, especially if I can find a way to keep the exact same character in-continuity by doing-so.

About halfway into my RP-career, most of my characters actually out-survived the RPs they were in, often with interestinfg complications upon their personal-lives that I wished to explore in-depth.
-The downside, was that my 'oldies' often were quite mentally-derranged because they were essentially stuck in an action-movie (read quotes for 'Last Action Hero')

Many of the bios became absurdly long, complicated, and tl;dr. So then I adopted the strategy of "Show, don't tell". So yeah... that crazy psycho sniper-assassin with a Chelsea-smile showing beneath thousands of dollars worth of plastic-surgery? Yeah... there's several RPs describing that, and why she distrusts men.

It got real fun with the spy-bios, since they'd constantly change cover-names in the middle of an RP, and only one of those covers carries-over to the next.

Eventually, as newbies swarmed the forums and the old-hands I Rp'd with started to dwither-away, I decided to start killing them off wholesale in epic conflicts that make the season-finales of Dr Who look totally slapped-together. ONE OF THESE MADE SARAFENE CRY.
"Just drive down that road, until you get blown up [by shells]"
    - General George Patton

"After several men of the company had been blown up by shells, I noticed that a spirit of uneasiness became dominant."

I seem to do the opposite. I make more characters than I use, and never use the same twice. The only real exception is when a story spans over multiple roleplays. I don't think I am against recycling, but I would rather try a new idea than one I've used before.

Thanks for the siggy Harby san. You definitely know my tastes.

I have some characters that get out and used in several RPs. Their names and personalities are often the same, and sometimes their appearance as well. The main reason for it, as others have said, is because they're characters I like a lot, who didn't get to really shine due to the RP they were in dying out for whatever reason.

I have also successfully taken characters who were from tabletop, and moved them into online games, and vice versa, in terms of their appearance, name, personality etc. Some of them have even ended up in unrelated fiction I've written, or at least planned.

I don't tend to keep their backstories though, as if I'm playing in someone elses' game, and they've taken the time to come up with their original universe and setting, I should be polite enough to fit my character into what they've established.

I do for the most part. Forum roleplays I rarely ever participate in, but in PnP games, or any RPG style of game that allows me to create a character (with exception of wow and clones, you can't really customize 'toons in those games) and customize it to look how I want it I tend to make them all look the same, have as close to the same abilities/skills etc.

It's not that I'm not creative, it's just how I picture myself as a hero, for lack of a better explanation.
