The teen (16-18) is deaf after a car crash, in which he lost his best friend. Afterwards, the parent he lives with (depending on the gender of your OC) sends him to live with the other, thinking a new town is best.

Once there, it is soon clear his blood parent can't be bothered, having not learned how to sign, or bother to allow him to lipread.

Upset by this, he retires to his room, breaking down in tears, unaware his stepfather/mother is sat in his room. Though he'd only had a small amount of time with them before, he had bonded quickly with her/him.

Preferring to spend time with her/him, he is glad when his stepparent offers to take a week on holiday, with just him. How close will they be?
