"Please, Be careful!"
The sound of Amata shouting to Rose was nearly drowned out by sound of the giant steel door that kept Vault 101 from the rest of the world started sliding back into place. Rose turned back just in time to see the Overseer shove Amata out of the way and try to leave the vault, a 10 Millimeter pistol in hand. The solid door slid into place just in time to lock the Overseer in, and With that final, mighty clang, Rose was left alone in the world. She shed a single tear and what could have been, what a wonderful life she could have had if her Father hadn't left, before turning around. She sidestepped the destroyed skeletons of the protestors that littered the ground outside the vault, a worried expression plastered on her face. She forced herself to to look away, to look at the door at the end of the small, stone corridor. Rose placed her hand against the weathered wood, closing her eyes and taking a deep, calming breath before pushing the old door open.
Rose gasped bright light that beat down upon her, blinding her momentarily. She lifted her arm to shield her face, and slowly lowered it as the intensity of the light started to diminish. She still squinted as she got her first look at her surroundings, at the grey, lifeless landscape of what was left of Washington D.C.. She took a few tentative steps forward, lowering her arm completely, and watched the wind send up small dust devils. The crumbling, destroyed ruins of The Capital City stood miles to the east. A small town, just as dilapidated the city, stood to her left. And a hulking, menacing metal dome stood directly in front of her. Megaton, If the entries in the Overseer's terminal were correct. A small town built around an Old World bomb. Rose sighed, putting her own Ten Millimeter pistol away. She prayed she wouldn't have to use it again soon. Why did her Father leave? Why did he not tell her? What was his purpose? She wanted to know, and nothing would stop her from learning the truth. With a final, longing look at the rotted wood door behind her, Rose started down the slope to her right.
Rose was lucky. She saw not a soul as she carefully made her way towards the menacing hulk named Megaton. She weaved past rocks and small destroyed towers, and after half an hour she reached the west wall of Megaton. Rose placed her hand on the cold, hard surface and started walking towards the front of the town. She was taken aback at the sight of a robot wearing a Sheriff's hat. It was constantly repeating a message about a bomb and being safe, Rose Bore it no mind. What caught her eye was the man, dressed in rags, sat before the closed entrance to the town. Rose approached the man and kneeled down, and shook him to full alertness.
"Please, Miss... I need water... I'm going to die..." The man rasped, placing a weak hand on Rose's shoulder.
"You poor thing... You deserve better than anything I have, but please, take this..." Rose reached into her pack and grabbed the only three bottles of purified water she had.
The Man's face lit up at the sight, and he kissed her on the back of the hand. "Thank you, Miss. You're a saint..." The Man said, and Rose merely smiled at him. She stood, and approached the closed pathway to Megaton. Rose looked up at the Sniper sitting above the two plane wings that blocked her path, and waved up to him. The Sniper waved back, and turned his back to do something. In a matter of moments, the plane engine above the wings whirred to life, and the wings started to pull away, revealing to large, solid doors. Rose smiled and waved to the man again before making her way inside. A large, heavy set of double doors sat just within the wall and, with a bit of effort, Rose managed to push one open.
Rose was surprised at the sight before her. Houses lined the outside of a huge crater, all made of the same material as the wall surrounding the city, and at the center of the crater stood a nuke, imposing and threatening to destroy the town if given the proper motivation. Rose was so busy admiring the strange town that she didn't notice a dark man approach her. "Well, I'll be. Another Newcomer!" Sheriff Simms exclaimed, smiling at Rose. She smiled back, holding her hand out to shake the Sheriff's, and he returned the gesture. "The name's Rose." She said, looking again at the strange town around her.
"You can call me Sheriff Simms. Might I ask you what brought you to our little oasis?" Simms asked, looking Rose over. "I'm looking for my Father. Mid Forties, black hair, wearing a Vault 101 doctor's outfit?" Rose replied, hope welling within her. Sheriff Simms scratched his beard, thinking on the subject. "Doesn't ring a bell, I'm afraid. You might want to check up at the bar, though. Just watch out for Moriarty, He's not exactly a good man. The bar's sitting on the opposite side of the crater, just past Craterside Supply. Can't miss it." The Sheriff replied. Rose smiled and thanked him, before walking on the outside of the crater towards the bar. She kept her eyes on the activities below; The man standing in a shallow puddle around the bomb, seeming to worship it. A busy food bar, people talking in the pathways between houses... It all seemed very peaceful. It wasn't what she was expecting at all. Rose even saw two children ran by above her, laughing without a care in the world. She was amazed at how normal everything felt... all her life she had been raised to believe the area outside the vault was hostile and unforgiving... This place was like a miniature paradise.
In no time, Rose was at Moriarty's Saloon. She pushed open the doors and grimaced at the grimy place. It was going to take a while to get used to the gritty wasteland after being raised in a clean, sterile vault...
Rose approached the counter, still looking around the bar, When A Ghoul approached her. Rose gasped and took a step back,a bit concerned. "What's the matter, doll face? 'Aint you ever seen a ghoul before?" Gob asked, quirking what was left of an eyebrow. Rose placed a hand on her pounding chest, and sighed in relief. "I'm very sorry, But no, I haven't. You just surprised me is all..." Rose replied, taking a seat at the bar. "Yeah, I guess having a face that looks like it's been run over with a cheese grater would surprise most people..." Gob replied darkly, grabbing a rag and starting to wipe down the grimy bar. Rose placed a hand on his and smiled. "You know, It's not that bad." She said sweetly. Gobb would have blushed if he had any skin left on his face. "You really mean that...? Gee, Tha-" Gob was interrupted by a thick, Irish accent shouting at him from behind. "Oi! Gob! Wha' The Hell are ye doin'? Get back Tah Work Ye lazy, Good fer nothin' Ghoul!" Moriarty shouted, shoving Gobb out of the way. The Ghoul Grumbled angrily but did as he was told. Moriarty loked Rose over, who was Scowling at his rudeness, before he Smiled and chuckled. "Ah, Butter me butt and call me a Biscuit! I 'aint seen you since ye was a sucklin' little babe, with narry a Tit to suckle!"
"And just who the hell are you?" Rose replied, disgusted with this man that thought himself a God. Moriarty merely Chuckled again and leaned against the bar, folding his arms over each other. 'I knew James had a Red head, But who knew She'd be so Fiery! I'm an old friend 'a yer dad's. He was here a while ago, Ya know..." Rose immediately perked up at mention of her father, Leaning forward and slamming her hand onto the bar. It brought a few strange stares from some of the patrons, but they soon enough went back to drinking and talking within themselves. "You saw my Father? Where is He? Where did he go!? Answer me!" Rose was nearly shouting, staring intently at Moriarty. The old Irish man just laughed, wiping a tear of mirth from his eye. "Oh Lassy, Ye got a LOT to learn about tha wasteland! I'm a Money making Kinda man, Sweet thing. Ye pass me some coin, And maybe my lips'll loosen..." Rose couldn't believe what this man was telling her. Her Father's 'old friend' was trying to wring some money from her, just so she could follow her father. She wanted to draw her Pistol and send his brains splattering against the walls, but what would that accomplish?
Instead, Rose put on her most seductive face and smiled at Moriarty. "Maybe I could pay you with something a bit more... Personal...?" She asked, her words dripping with a sweet, seductive tone. She placed a hand against Moriarty's face and caressed it, Making the Old man smile. "Mmm... I could use a woman like you around here. The one I got isn't as popular as I like. But you... You could make me A lot of money..." Moriarty said, placing his own hand on Rose's face. She smiled again, planting a kiss on his dirty cheek. "I might be able to take you up on that offer after I find my Daddy... But that could take a while if I don't know where he went..." Rose said, pushing all the right buttons with Moriarty. The old man smiled straitened, pulling away from Rose. "Alright, alright. He said he was goin' to tha' ruins to find a man by tha name o' Three dog. Popular man, Tha' Three dog. Has 'is own radio show. But it would be a suicide mission for someone like you. You don't seem like the fightin' type, and that place is bound to be 'a crawlin' with all kinds'a terrible things. Why don't you just stay 'ere an-" Moriarty was stopped by a powerful fist to his face, which sent him sprawling backwards.
"Not Interested." Rose said, scowling at him again. She stood from her wobbly stool and looked around the bar. Many people didn't seem to nice, and many more seemed too drunk to hold a weapon, but these people were going to be her only salvation. Rose pulled the Ten Millimeter from her hip and fired a round at the ceiling. The bullet pierced strait through the thin metal and left a metallic ringing sound through out the bar. Many of the Patrons at the bar drew their own weapons, and aimed them at Rose. But she didn't back down, this was exactly what she wanted. "All of you, listen up! You don't know me, and I don't know you, but I need your help. My Father has left me for dead, all alone in this world. I grew up in the nearby vault, sheltered and taken care of. But now I'm here, out in the Wasteland of America, searching for him. I don't have much in the way of money, or in equipment, But I am heading into the ruins of the Capital. There is sure to be many dangers, many pains, and many treasures. Are any of you willing to place your trust in a stranger for the pursuit of knowledge and fortune?" Rose shouted to the entire Saloon. She looked at all the wary faces, beaten and downtrodden. She prayed some one would help her, that some one would stand up and fight beside her. Because if not. If no one wanted to help?
She was going to be a Rose, plucked from the soft soil of the earth.
