Alright, I've finally posted. Sorry, guys. Anyway, I decided to switch to the more traditional form of the Tanka rather than the common Haiku. Also, by talismans, Hyousuke (or me) was referring to the Omamori. He knows how to make those that are used against ghosts with a wide variety of effects. I guess I'll write about what they actually do later on.

Drustan Cadfael

Title: Soldier of the Western Province

Age: 29

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Profession: Ex-Soldier currently unemployed tries to make a living as a stable hand

Appearance:
Drustan is a man of average height at 6'0. He is fit and well-proportioned with a slightly broader chest and shoulders he aquired from his years of handling a sword. While he has a broad face his features are defined most prominently a sharp nose and deep set eyes. He let his hair grow out to frame his face and jawline.

He has a full set of light plate armour and a chainmail suit which he wore during his years as a soldier. The set was custom made to fit his body and was crafted out of high quality materials. It wasn't made to stand out and has little aesthetic appeal. When he's on the road he wears a heavy woven cloak in a deep burgundy color. Since Drustan no longer carries out the duties of a soldier he is often seen in modest attire consisting of a lace-up gambeson paired with fitted trousers and a pair of boots.

Personality:
Drustan is a very complex individual, even he has a hard time explaining why he acts the way he does. He isn't much of a talker and altough he doesn't want to admit it the things he has seen on the field of battle changed him. He feels very strongly about protecting and holding onto his loved ones. Loss is something he can't deal with. He doesn't pity himself but he has a hard time dealing with the tragedies of his land and its people. It takes a certain type of understanding to connect with him.

Background:
Dustan was born in Cudsul but he spent most of his life in the Western Province. He didn't know his parents and he was raised by a very kind couple with no children of their own. As an only child he grew up with the children of neighbours who later in life would join him in the army. His life in Cudsul had been fairly uneventful and he grew up to be a fine young man. Looking to prove himself his parents decided to have him try and join the army. Dustan worked every job he could get to be able to afford his armour and live the life of a soldier. The captain of the Western Province visited Cudsul in the winter when Dustan came of age. After sparring with one of his most experienced soldiers the captain praised him for his level-headed approach to battle. He was recruited into the army the winter he turned nineteen.

During his years of service Dustan met and fell in love with a the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Their relationship wasn't easy and they spent months apart neither of them knowing if the other would return alive. When they were together they never stayed in one place too long following the army throughout the provinces. After eight years of service having gone through many hardships, lost many friends and fought in countless battles Dustan was given a relief of a year. He settled down in a small village in the Western Province. His lover surprised him with a one year old daughter at his return. They lived in relative peace with only the horrors of the battlefield haunting his mind. Dustan never thought he was fit to raise a child because he could be gone the next day. Still he found himself doing everything in his power to make sure his daughter Claudia would never be in want.

The winter prior to his relief had been brutal. The crops had been damaged by the frost and only few farmers had enough to harvest. His land had been touched by winter but his crops were not lost. Hunger ruled his village and people started to resent the ones who's crops had not failed. People went to extreme measures to get food or at least prevent others from having any. One of the families in the village had already lost one child. The mother became insane with grief and couldn't be trusted with children. She tried to take the child of another before. If she couldn't have her child back she would make sure all of the families would suffer the way she had. Rumors spread about the crazy woman visiting the Godswife in Lazul. Dustan had been told she sold magic. He knew little of magic only that it existed and was regarded with fear and suspicion.
A practitioner of magic was viewed the same as a brewer of poisons. Witches and Sorcerers were able to brew potions, speak to birds and rats, and bend promises into curses. Magic was in all names and words, agreements and sacrifice. It was not a proper thing to do. At first he didn't believe in someting ellusive as magic until it affected his family. It started with their crops failing for no apparant reason but only when he found Claudia lying face down in his withered fields he knew the stories were very real. That winter he lost everything. His wife left him and his daughter had passed away.

Equipment/Possessions:
- A full set of light plate armour and a chainmail suit.
- A two handed claymore.
- A woven burgundy cloak
- A set of books on the lore of Evanhearth and it's people.
- Several pouches of copper and silver pieces.
- A traveling bag which holds everything he needs to survive outdoors like food, blankets, a flask of water, flint and tinder.
- Two small daggers and a knife he uses to hunt for food.

Abilities/Talents:
A soldiers training: Drustan was recruited as a soldier when he came of age. There he learned to fight both armed and unarmed. He is a quick thinker and can turn the tide of a fight discouraging his opponents with his battle prowess. While he was taught to make use of multiple different swords he favors the two handed variety of the claymore because of its power. He can deal blow after blow leaving his enemy staggering and hesitant to make another attack. He is miserable at using a bow and arrow. He just doesn't possess the necessary patience. He can treat light wounds and knows just enough about botany to not kill himself by eating something that is poisonous. His position as a soldier of the Western Province allowed him to learn and employ battle tactics to even the odds against enemy armies.

A soldiers life: In his eight years as a soldier he has seen the savage and cruel side of the people of Evanhearth. He fought with clans and tribes who invaded the free lands to add those to their own. They took prisoners from different cultures and as such he learned about their customs. Because of his experience he isn't easily surprised and he usually prepares for the worst.
