And yes Lotr was definitely hard to read, I meant the guy had four chapters on trees talking
I am of the same opinion. The stuff they added in is because you get more than just Bilbo's perspective now... But i never read LoTR, i hated fantasy and it was assigned reading when i was in school.

That would be because Lord of the Rings was never meant to be published AND Tolkien wasn't a writer. He was a Language Professor at a college in Boston I think. I could be wrong about the where he taught but by the time he graduated College he was fluent in 19 different languages and had a working knowledge of 5 others. (24 total languages for anyone keeping count.)

His Son i believe found the books in his attack after his death and had them published.

A terrible sign of the state of education in the United states though, when I was in 7th grade I tried to discuss Tolkien and his work with my English teacher and she had never heard of him. Seriously how do you get to be an English teacher and have NEVER heard of Tolkien???

Really? This is news to me, I knew that Tolkien was a soldier in WW1, I knew he was a good friend of Lewis (Author of Narnia), and I also knew that he actually talked with Saruman (Christopher Lee, who btw was british special forces in WW2). But I did not know that he never officially published LotR... gonna have to look that up lol.

Also, how does an english teacher not know what Lord of the Rings is? :O

I am surprised by the English teacher not knowing The Lord of the Rings. Scary stuff, that an educator could get by without even recognizing the title or Tolkien.

I, however, did not know the LoTR was something that was never intended for mass publication. I can understand how it is written from the perspective of a linguist though. Like you said DVS four chapters on trees talking, but once I caught on to that point I kind of fell into reading the books with a bit more ease.

I really hope I get to see Hobbit soon, I think the added perspective could be good.

Yeah he wrote the Hobbit as a bedtime story really for his kids and Lord of the Rings was a personal Hobby. Just something he did for fun. Also there are 14 languages within Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion that can actually be learned to read write and speak. He created them because of his facility with languages.

The story on who published the books differs from the times I've heard it mentioned. His son, Son-in-law, it changes from one telling to the next but I'm sure it's out there to find the accurate telling. as I heard it after he died the book was found and it was ONE book composed of six 'books' or parts. The publishing company decided to split it into a trilogy. That's why the end of book one is basically like the end of a chapter and Book two starts with literally the next sentence in the story basically.

They took a larger piece of work and just chopped it into thirds.

Ok, puttin' on the Big GM pants for a minute. Pascal, good post, I liked it even though it was about 10 hours after you posted before I even realized that it was there. (my bad) A JD post might be good soon senor Odin, no major rush though. Really more than anything we're waiting on Orion, and Affili. Come on boys I know you're out there.

Jade Empire has slowed down a lot too which I'm not complaining about, I know the holidays have been crazy for people but I'm just throwing out that we gotta try and get some momentum going here if at all possible peoples.

    Thank you for your time.

(takes off Big GM pants and goes frollicking through a field of swords, spears, axes and other mideval weaponry.....)

    Ouch.

Hmm, not trying to burst your bubble here, but Lotr was published in 1954 and 1955, just checked my book last night
Plus a radio version was adapted from the book in 1955 and '56 which I guess they couldn't do if it wasn't published until after Tolkiens death (in 1973). Granted, Simalarian I'm pretty sure was published by his son, in fact I think I read somewhere that it was an unfinished work and was finished by his son.

Oh and looking forward to that post Mr. Odin

I go to sleep and miss all of the things! I can't believe that about an English teacher either, but I do know that middle school teachers in many of the states do not need to have a degree in the field that they teach. They need a degree in that area once we get to secondary... That is a crazy rule.

I am with DVS about the publishing. I believe that the son/son-in-law found a few other things that Tolkein had never finished and had them published.

Looking forward to seeing the posting beginning again soon, and no worries Affili, glad to see you back!
