    Holmes

I've been trying to draw cleaner and not use a line-sketching method, but it's really difficult. I either can't make large lines straight enough, or they're jittery, and in the end the image looks worse off than it would have had I stuck with my little sketchy method.

Are there any pointers you can give me to help me out here with this transition, because obviously whatever I'm doing I'm either doing wrong or it isn't helping.

From what I understand watching my mother at work (she's a genuine professional artist with over 30 years of experience) you don't stop using the line-sketching method. You just carefully erase the sketch around the finished drawing. At this point my mother's good enough to just fling anatomically accurate drawings of people out of her wrist with a few casual flicks but she's just showing off.

EDIT: Hah, it's on the internet. Something my mother drew in a pub in the 70s:

Like I told you, it will definitely take some time to adjust -- try not to get frustrated. Just try to remain loose while you draw; your arm shouldn't be stiff, just swing you main movements from your shoulder (rather than locking your arm and moving only from the wrist like most people with sketchy lines tend to do) -- follow through, fluid motion. Again, it will feel all kinds of weird and like you're dong it wrong for a while, but you'll eventually get the hang of it.

That's pretty cool that your mom's an artist. ^_^

That sketch pretty good! I'd be interested to see some of her other stuff

Okay, I'll try to keep at it.

    That's pretty cool, Hank.
