S:ARG RP, Paying the Price (Episode one: Of Greed)

    Prelude

The tournament had been a great success, first place and the five friends had decided to celebrate this by partying the entire night until morning. They had met up in the hotel bar after making preparations. Jason, normally the quiet and more reserved member of the group and happened to arrive first hooked up with five girls and invited them to celebrate together with the five friends. On the phone with Brett, he laughed and said "I dunno. I didn't think they'd say yes man!" As the drinks started flowing and they'd become more comfortable with each other Vince suggested that they'd make a boat trip to a nearby island for some diving and sunbathing, which the rest agreed on. The party had continued long into the night and when it ended, most of the five friends had left in the company of a girl back to their individual rooms. When morning came, they all met up in the harbour and hired a tourist boat and crew to take them to the nearby island. The crew supplied them with drinks and food, free of charge since the captain was a paintball fan; this was his congratulation to the winners of the tournament. They started getting drowsy from the sun, food and the drinks and fell asleep on the way to the island.

    DAY 1, EARLY AFTERNOON

When they awoke, they were in cages, hands bound and mouths gagged. Groggy from being drugged, they started to panic and look around, mumbling into the gags as a man started talking. "Lookie here, they are starting to come around, I was just about to smack some life into them." One of the guards was fiddling with a cell phone while he spoke to a second guard. "I just got a great idea" he said and started typing on the phone. "What do you say about that? Facebook update; Having a great time at the beach on a wonderful island here in Asia."

The second laughed and said "what about 'just met some local studs. Love this place!' I think that one is really into me, she can't stop starring." He pointed a large, cruel looking knife at one of the girls. He moved up to the cage and kicked the wooden bars violently. "Oi. Sweety. You have a fancy for me, yeah?" There was no answer so he kicked it again, even more power behind this kick. "DO YOU!" Jason did his best to do something, yelling into the gag and moving against the restraints. The first guard spoke up again, "oh, look at fucking. Wha's that guy’s name. Romeo. Fuckin' Romeo over here. Really sweet." He moved to Jason's cage and YANKED his restraints, pulling him forward and punching him square in the cheek. "Yeah. Real fuckin' sweet. Get at me again boy an--"

"Ooooiiii, stop that you buffoons, these are our guests" a commanding voice said and a man approached the cages. "This is not the proper way to treat guests." The man who just had punched Jason backed away from the cage, "sorry captain." The man stopped in front of the cage the men were in and crouched down to their height. "How are you mate?" he asked Brett. "Oh sorry, you can't speak right now, let's do something about that shall we?" he said and pulled away Brett's gag. "Now, I guess you have a lot of questions that you want to ask, but bear with me for a while. You are our, guests, on this island, however, you can't leave until we get some...how do you say...compensation for our hospitality from your families. But I think I've taken a liking to you. I like the look in your eye. "

The man stood up and looked around at the others in the cages and after a moment, turned back to Brett. "Do you want to go home; Brett is your name, right?" The only answer Brett could give was a nod. "Yes Brett. I like you, so I'll give you a sweet offer; you can win your freedom if you do a little thing for me. You see that man over there," he said and pointed towards another captive. "If you can win against him in a one on one fight, I'll let you, your friends and even the girls whom you came here with go. What do you say about that Brett?" "What kind of fight?" Brett asked. "Oh, nothing major. It's something of a...local tradition. We do it all the time. It's just a fight to the death and the only weapon you can use is your hands. What say you Brett, do you accept?" Brett looked at the others and he could see a glimmer of hope in their eyes; they almost wished for him to accept the proposal, even if it means sacrificing someone else's life. "I'll do it," Brett finally said after a while. "Excellent!" the captain exclaimed, "Oi, you, open the cage and undo his restraints, the same with that man over there" the captain said to the nearest guard. "Let the show begin."

Brett stood there and stared at the other man. He was a normal looking guy, Hispanic. He looked to be about as scared as Brett was, his eyes wide, looking around. Brett himself wondered if this was a dream and it looked like the other man was thinking the same. They weren't REALLY gunna make them fight to the death, were they? The silence was broken as the man said in a loud vice, "don't stare like you're debating making out. One of you is going to die. The other, well, the other will be set free. GOO!!"

Name: Jason Thomason. (Jay, JT, Jase)
    Age: 27.
    Born: Southview, GA.
    Height/Weight: 5'11"/185.
Appearance: Jason is a fairly average guy. Not tall, not large, plain brown hair and eyes, he didn't stand out much. He does have a U.S.M.C. tattooed across his back and an eagle, globe and anchor on his left wrist. On his right forearm, he has the words "BORN TO KILL."
    Pic:

Bio: Born and raised in the suburbs outside Augusta, Jason was the youngest of 4 children. His family was of average income with his father, Darren, working as for the local DPW and his mother, Suzanne, working as a manager at a local fast food chain. He met Able and Vincent in grade school, Vincent in class and Able through as his parent's were friends of Jason's parents from high school. Jason had what most would consider a "normal" childhood. He had a decent relationship with his brothers and sister, had friends and was social, but his mother and father were a different story. Being the youngest, he was often the brunt of their frustration and they were very distant. It is not that they were bad parents, or didn't care, but they showed more interst in the accomplishments of the older kids and looked at him as an inconvenience sometimes. He got into baseball around this time, enjoying it and growing closer to Able and Vince. At the age of 7, all of the Thomasons were enrolled into karate because both parents thought it was a good outlet for energy and also a way to mature the children.

Jason was always at odds with his sister, Alicia (second youngest), but very, very close with his brother Jon (second oldest next to Aaron). His older brother Aaron (the eldest) was more distant from the kids, seemingly more interested in being the "grown up" and doing his own thing, distancing himself from the other kids. Aaron was a track star and swimmer, honor society and the "shining star" of the family, while Alicia was "mommy and daddy's little girl." Jon and Jason were the odd ones out most of the time. Jon had a streak of incidents between 15 and 16 where he was constantly fighting or getting into trouble and it carried over into Jason who didn't react well to the tension between his father and Jon.

Jon and Jason grew closer at this time because Jason tried to be the person to calm Jon, who was always prone to be negative or lash out at his parents and those who tried to help but for some reason, Jon was always more receptive to Jason.

The year before starting high school, the three started playing paintball randomly. What started off as a stupid game to play and way to kill time and spend some money turned into something that would later lead to a lot of good things.

During highschool, he continued playing baseball and that is where he met Brett and Clay. Highschool was a good time for Jason because he really grew up, as an individual and physically. He started running cross country around that time and excelled at it even in spite of the fact that he "hated running more than Mom's brussel sprouts." He was constantly badgered to join the football team instead of cross country but never did. Aaron pushed him to run track, so Jason didn't, just to spite Aaron. As Jason did get bigger though, his body was less built for cross country and his performance lagged slightly, but he didn't mind, still being in the upper echlon of runners.

When Jason was still in high school, junior year, Jon surprised the family by saying that he was going to enlist into the Army straight out of highschool. The parents threw a fit, but Jon was determined. And even though Jason asked him not to go. He told Jon if he left, Jason wouldn't have any family, only his friends, but Jon said it was something he had to do. To get away, to show the family he could be more than Aaron, to grow up. Jon hadn't applied himself in school, he was distant and didn't care. He didn't really have anything else to fall back on. There was some bitterness when he left and Jason hadn't talked with him much for several years.

After that though, he began going home less and going out with his friends more. He grew a lot closer to them, even dated Brett's sister for a few months only to break it off (both knew it was a fling, but it was something Brett would NEVER cease hearing about from Jason). They continued to play paintball, bringing both Brett and Clay and the team got more organized, better equipement and then started to compete in local tournaments. It was nothing glorious, they usually finished top 5 and were awarded free paintball merchandise or in-store money to use towards new gear.

After graduating high school, Jason seemed somewhat lost. He started dating a girl and was very much in love with her and eventually moved out of the house. Aaron was away at school getting his degree to be a lawyer, Alicia was still at home studying locally and Jon hadn't been home in years. He was once home for less than a week on furlough from deployment, but Jason avoided him and was somewhat bitter. He found himself upset that Jon left him like he did and now when he came back, everyone loved him so much more than when he'd left. And again, Jason was nothing to anyone.

This only led Jason to get closer still with his friends, which was a good thing. They excelled as a group and loved tearing up paintball and even went on some state, then national tournaments. However, as they started going to school and focusing on other things, paintball ceased to be. Jason had been going to a local college on a scholarship but didn’t like it, was too close to home and just studying "general studies" was dragging on.

On a complete whim, he decided to join the United States Marine Corps. He enlisted for many of the same reasons that Jon did, but also chose the Marines instead of the army because of the fact that it was painted to him that they were a cut above other branches. It was little surprise to him when his family didn't react much like they did for Jon. There was no stir, no celebration or goodbye. Just Jason leaving.

He was in the delayed entry program for 4 months, and it was in that second month that the news of Jon's death was delivered. Jon had been killed in action in Iraq after a week of intense firefighting. At this point, Jason became very guilty and self loathing, distant from everyone. Everything was thrown in his face by his family, even subtely. "You should have seen him when he was home." "You should have talked to him more." "He always wanted to be something more for you Jason."

To add to the guilt, 50% of the $450,000 SGLI insurance policy went to Jason and not only did that add guilt, the way the family seemed somewhat bitter or upset at him for GETTING the money didn't help. Jason promised himself never to touch the money until he figured out what to do with it, and he didn't tell anyone about the money, not even his friends.

Bootcamp changed Jason. It made him hard, focused and confident. While bootcamp made him hard, the rest of his 6 years in the Marines tempered that, made him from a lump of metal and honed him into a sharp piece of steel. He'd deployed 2 times in his 6 years and got out as a Sergeant. Despite being in the MOS of logistics, he was tagged onto a deployable unit immediately and deployed within 6 months of completing schooling.

To anyone who asked, his 2 deployments were uneventful. He was fired at, but never fired back, never killed anyone. He was awarded a purple heart for a piece of shrapnel that left a 2 inch, barely visible scar on his jawline.

However the truth is that during his second deployment, his fire team was into very heavy combat operations in Iraq and over the course of 9 days and then another 6 in a row, his fireteam was involved in almost constant fighting, taking 6 casualties (of 14 people), including every other member of Jason's 4 person fire team being killed, or wounded and evacuated. Jason discovered a dark part of him during that time. Discovered he was capable of unthinkable hate and violence. During that time, there were no prisoners taken, but a handful of insurgents did try to surrender. The most disturbing part, the reason Jason would never talk about it is because he enjoyed it. He missed it despite the losses because it gave Jason the most direct way to vent and deal with all of his feelings: hate, guilt, confusion, anger. Anything he felt, he could either deal with or push aside.

Upon coming home and being discharge, he found himself almost as lost as before. No job, no significant others, no plan. He quickly reunited with his friends and at this point, they came up with the idea to start up paintball again. More time and more money, more maturity and some good, capable guys led them to excel (it didn't hurt having a cop and Marine on their team after all).

His brother's money was still untouched and grew to a fairly substantial amount but until he figured out the "right thing" to do with it, he wouldn't touch it.

Using the GI Bill, Jason went back to school full time, AGAIN starting with "general studies" and lived by himself in a smaller apartment with the money the GI Bill provided. He didn't really have anything going or any focus, which frustrated him further, going against all of his Marine Corps training. The answer he had was putting more time into the paintball team, schooling and (while keeping it a secret from friends and family) going to counseling for PTSD issues and anxiety. Finally he decided narrowing down his school subject to either counseling or being a social worker, some job where he could try to help others. Much of the information he studied helped him better himself.

Noticing that while his life with his friends was different, with his family and previously with his Marines, his attitude was very aggressive and direct because of all of the negative emotions Jason was dealing with that had no real outlet, and that was why those weeks in heavy combat were the easiest for him. It was a simple scenario that allowed him to vent and dump all of those emotions into SOMETHING, and for once, albeit only a short time, he felt free of those burdens because in SOME way, he was dealing with them.

Eventually, their team won a string of paintball tourneys that got them into position to go to a major, televised event that would take place in Asia. At the last minute, things were complicated by Able ending things with his sister Alicia. While he was never close with Alicia, they were still family and the two haven't addressed the issue yet, but there was a quiet tension between the two best friends.

    Name: Able Dunn
    Age:27
    Born: Fort Lauderdale, FL
    Height/Weight: 6'even, 180 lbs.
Appearance: Able is tall and wiry. He has little to no body fat and despite his leaness, his musculature is clearly defined.
His hair is about 4" long, light blond, and in a constant state of dishevelment. He has a somewhat fair complexion with easily visible freckles upon his face and shoulders.
He is heavily tattooed across both his arms: The words 'Fir Na Tine' are inked in gothic lettering in a banner across his right forearm, leading into a sleeve depicting a detailed image of St. Florian upon his upper arm and shoulder. His left arm is covered with a full sleeve done in traditional Japanese style, depicting two samurai battling a demon.

Bio: Able was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to James and Linda Dunn. Able's father worked for the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department as a Captain, and his mother worked as an ER nurse at Fort Lauderdale Hospital. As an only child, Able wanted for little as a young boy; supported with the love and resources of his middle class family.

However Able's ideal upbringing was short lived, as his father was killed in a smoke elxplosion while fighting an apartment building fire just six days after Able's seventh birthday. Following the accident Linda desired to leave Florida and move back to the suburbs of Augusta, Georgia, where she was originally from. The small family moved in with Able's maternal granparents, and his mother found a job at a local hospital in the city.

His father's death coupled with the relocation to a new city was hard on Able, and he initially struggled with coping with the drastic changes. He was rarely found at home during waking hours, running off and exploring in an attempt to distance himself from the life he was not accustomed to. It was during this formative period that Linda reconnected with Jason's mother, a close friend during her high school years, and subsequently Able and Jason soon grew to be close friends themselves.

With the connection established with his new friend, Able began to grow comfortable with his new life. He began to take a keen interest in school, as well as sports, and it was through his little league team that he met Clayton. The three boys quickly became inseperable.

High school was a yet another time of rapid change for Able. Though not gifted, Able began to succeed comfortably with his academics. It was also during high school that he met Brett and Vincent, and his group of close friends grew to four. In sports he began to excel as well, playing baseball and football at the varsity level. Though baseball was his first "true" love, football is where Able's physical prowess shone, his natural speed and athleticism making up for his lack of raw power. During his senior year, Able was tentatively scouted to play wide receiver at the University of Georgia, but after a time he declined in order to follow his father's footsteps into the fire service.

Following graduation, Able sought out the qualifications to become a professional firefighter. By his nineteenth birthday he had fufilled all of the requirements to apply with the Augusta Fire Department, and he immediately applied. He was not initially selected, and Able was placed towards the top of a waiting list for employment with the department. During the time before he was eventually hired at the age of twenty-one, Able spent his time pursuing a paramedic qualification, as well as becoming heavily involved with a tournament paintball team comprised of his four close friends.

After being hired on with the AFD, Able was assigned to Truck 10, based out of Augusta's Fire Station #3. As a member of Truck 10, Able truly found his calling as a firefighter. His identity became meshed with the job, and he worked tirelessly to better himself within his profession. He was quickly selected to become a member of the AFD’s elite Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, and following the completion of his training qualifications he was deployed to assist in SAR operations in the wake of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake. By the time he reached his twenty-sixth birthday he had been awarded the rank of Lieutenant on Truck 10's A-Shift.

It was soon after his promotion to lieutenant that Able began seeing Jason's sister Alicia. The pair had been around one another for the bulk of their lives, but had never dated. Over the course of the following year, Able and Alicia's casual dating had grown into a serious relationship with whisperings of eventual marriage. This came to a sudden end during a night of partying following one of the paintball team's successful tournaments, when a heavily intoxicated Able hooked up with a past girlfriend that happened to be out at the same bar. The next morning Able confessed his transgression to Alicia, and she immediately left him.

Now as the trip to Asia grows nearer, Able hopes that his mistake will not cost him his best friends as well...

    NAME: Edwina (Eddy) Voight

    AGE: 25

    BORN: Norwich Vermont

HEIGHT AND WEIGHT: 5’7”, 130 lbs

APPEARANCE: Of medium height and medium build with long brown hair that has a slight wave to it. She has a long face with a well shaped nose, full lips, hazel-green eyes and a light olive skin tone. She has no distinguishing marks or tattoos.
BIO: Edwina was four when she went to live with her grandparents in Cambridge ma. She’d been born and raised in Vermont by her city planner father and librarian mother until their unfortunate car accident to which Eddie was witness, safely strapped into the back seat. She was bundled off to her maternal grandparents who owned a large, rambling house in Cambridge not far from Harvard where they ran a popular restaurant. They had settled into an empty house routine by that point and all three parties took some time to adjust especially with Edwina so raw and unsettled by what she’d seen. Waking frequently with nightmares of blood and shattered glass. Her grandparents were doting though and gave their traumatized granddaughter everything she needed and then some, their good sense stopping them from spoiling her outright. She was put into a good school and spent her time after-school in the company of her grandparents either at the restaurant or at home. She helped out in both places, developing a good work ethic and largely sheltered from unpleasantness in any sense. Because the restaurant took up so much of their time they never traveled and neither did she.

As she grew up she became interested in distant places, pouring over her grandfather’s religiously maintained subscription to National Geographic. She got her first camera when she was ten and began to dream of being a photographer. She made good grades and had a few good friends, her house being the social gathering point of her small circle of friends. It was assumed that when she attended college she would go locally to one of the many colleges in the area. However, she surprised them all by applying and getting into the Art Institute of Chicago. She spent four blissful years on her own there, traveling home on vacations and summer breaks but longing for further travel. Upon graduation she managed to land work with the travel magazine “Afar” which wasn’t her dream job of National Geographic but promised her much in the way of travel. She was supposed to join an exhibition to South America to tour some “Eco-tourist” locations when one of the senior photographers had to drop out of a trip to some south east Asian Islands. She finished the shoot and riding on the high of her first job accomplished decided to stay and let loose a little before heading home, something she rarely allowed herself.
