Flight of the Phoenix (a Firefly RPG) OOC

This will be an RPG set in the Firefly universe. If you are not familiar with the show, I would ask that you please choose a different game so that everyone's already up to speed right out of the gate.

This RPG is now Closed for new members
    PM to check for openings

Timeframe:This will be set in the same timeframe as the series but before the movie (so after the war, before Miranda)

We're intending to run this in episodes, no canon characters (unless we borrow someone like Badger to have our crew bump up against in an episode) all original crew characters. Several crew positions are already filled (or tentatively filled), list follows but first:

    Plot for our first episode

After an unsatisfactory job leaves the crew with 1/4 of the pay they expected, they have to forgo their shares in order to get supplies for the ship and some meagre basic food (pressed protein, baby, we make everything with it). There's just enough left over to head for one of the many places where they may pick up a job which, as so often happens, is a dive bar in a busy port.

They finally get a line on a job through a contact that they know isn't entirely trustworthy but a job's a job and they are to meet with the client's representative for instructions.

In this meeting (carried out in person in some out-of-the-way place as to be private) the story is that the client's inheritance has been stolen by his great-uncle, a man who was supposed to transfer the money to him on his twenty-first birthday. Rather than doing so the Great-uncle, an insatiable gambler, has been using the inheritance as his own private fund and the nephew has information that the treasure - he is unclear as to how much is there - is in gold bars because his Great-uncle likes to be able to touch it.

It is verifiable that the Great-uncle is indeed a high roller (that could be fun for some crew members to investigate)

We can hash out where it's kept and add that and then the plan for liberating the gold can be figured out in-game if we want. Once we get to actually pulling the heist we'll have ample opportunity to find out that the client is not actually related to the mark, an old man whose philanthropy betters the lives of settlers (and he gambles with that money but it IS his money, the inheritance story is totally false). By then we'll be committed and have to decide what to do with the Great-uncle who's caught us robbing him and perhaps have to deal with the conman 'nephew' as well.

But first...a few caveats and addendums!

The Phoenix is indeed a Firefly-class cargo vessel. Why? Because we've seen the show, we are pretty familiar with what the inside and outside look like and more or less how everything functions. Besides, who doesn't love a Firefly...and hovering is really a nifty thing to be able to do, right? So let's just go with it.

Room accommodations: There are crew quarters, passenger quarters, and, of course, two shuttles (one is empty one is rented by Narcissus). It would make sense for the crew to live in crew quarters (obviously) and the doctor and the preacher would probably bunk there. (The passenger dorm is pretty near the infirmary so the doc would make the most sense bunked there).

Absences: It's a bummer when players leave other people hanging. So if someone vanishes we'll work around it as well as we can for a day or two, probably PM the missing one, and if no answer is forthcoming we may begin to plan an interesting demise for your character. (not kidding, I've found that works quite well)

    Sex & Strangers:
It is generally known that Genesis is not in favor of shipboard romances ("Don't turn my ship into a gorram love boat") but sex happens.
If it does, she expects it to happen in your bunk.
If it happens with someone who isn't from our crew, she expects that stranger to stay OFF the boat unless she expressly permits them on.
Raindrop expects it to go to PM when it promises to turn graphic.

Other than that, all basic rules of good RP'ing apply. From the group we've got here, I don't think I need to explain so let's do this!
Gambling on Midas: Flight of The Phoenix, Episode 1

    Genesis D'Angelo
    Position: Captain
    Attitude toward the alliance: Rebellious
    Age: 36
    Gender: Female

Appearance: 5'6” athletic, auburn hair, usually worn in a braid. Lightly freckled skin, green-blue eyes, high cheekbones, firm, full mouth.
She has a hangman's scar across her throat, heavier on the left side than the right, and a smoker's rasp to her contralto voice because of it.
Wears leather or denim pants with blouses of a contrasting soft fabric as a nod to femininity. May tie her hair back with a bandana or leather ties. Always wears a short rawhide necklace that consists of a platinum ring with a chip of black stone balanced inside the ring in a smaller round setting. Brown coat, of course.

Personality: Definite and strong-willed, intelligent, shrewd. Cares for others deeply but without fanfare. Flashfire temper yet has the capacity for humor.

Background info: Married young and widowed young by the war, Genesis worked as a field hospital nurse for the Browncoats. She became friends with a soldier she had patched up and when he found work on the 'Lady Claire' he came back to see her. He teased her about being just as good as any of the crewmen and dared her to come work on the ship. Somewhat to his surprise, she packed only a few of her own things, taking instead her husband's clothes, and went with her friend from that war-torn area to the ship that night.

At first the captain and most of the crew refused to take her seriously but she found that she was just where she wanted to be and it showed. Eventually she would have been welcome in a First Mate capacity on many ships but her dream was to captain her own. The Phoenix is the realization of that dream of freedom – the price being the acceptance of any kind of work that will keep her flying.

Equipment: Twin .45 revolvers strapped openly to either hip plus boot knives and a set of brass knuckles carried in her right coat pocket.

    Name: Joseiah Creed.
    -
Attitude: Doesn't particularly like them for their treatment of the outer rim but won't hesitate to do his duty regardless if they are.
    -
    Age: 53.
    -
    Gender: Male.
    -
Occupation: Preacher. Does odd jobs for what money he needs.
    -
Appearance: Joseiah stands at 5'11" in height. He has rough, aged, and well tanned skin with few scars from his younger years. His body is well toned and still fairly capable of strenuous activity despite the age which he claims. He has sky blue eyes which gives his face a soft quality and also relatively short hair boasting an iron gray color. Joseiah is almost always in an old brown robe-like coat over a sleeveless gray shirt and usually wears well worn black pants as well as leather boots with almost the same color as the pants. Lastly Joseiah carries a small plain gold ring in one of the pouches on his belt, there are 5 small pouches in total. with varying contents.
    -
Personality: Joseiah is a man at peace with the world around him, but he does what he can to help bring hope to those who need it as is a sworn promise he commited himself to. He is almost impossible to irritate and/or make angry as he has been through far too much in his life for it to make a difference. His calmness comes with mostly a comforting, sometimes fatherly, warmth when speaking to most who are younger than him. There can be a cold edge to the persona of Joseiah when there is a need for authority or disipline in a situation, however violence is not in the man's nature unless it is forced. The man has nothing against those who hold less to no faith, he considers it a personal decision but is more than willing to talk with them should they have a question he can answer.
    -
Brief History: Joseiah was born on Ariel before the war had taken place. He was raised in a well liked family who never had truely taken sides when the war started. He was homeschooled by his parents on whatever he wished at the time encouraging him to think on his own accord and also be himself. Later on in his younger years he had started to feel uneasy among his peers and the life he was living, given that he decided to leave and move around between the planets just before the war occured. During the war his records were nonexistant, partially due to some manipulation on his part, and his whereabouts were unknown until right after the Battle of Serenity Valley. Joseiah appeared among the outer planets as a preacher vowing to help those in need of recovery, wether mental or spiritual. In his travels he has moved around the galaxy quite a bit doing his duty well and getting to know these people left him unable to return willing to the core planets.

    Equipment: Pocket Bible, Communication device.

    Name: Terran Archer

Attitude Towards the Alliance: He will never support them, but he doesn't have a hatred for them either. Neutral. It wasn't his war.

    Age: 32

    Gender: Male

    Occupation: Security

    Appearance: 6'5", 234lbs

Equipment: Terran carries a small bag of belongings containing some clothes, necessities, and a personal journal that includes pictures of his family.

    His weapons-

    Brief history:

Terran had always been a family man. He was raised on a moon of one of the border planets, a small settlement called Reach, given its name because it was far from the reaches of the quarrels of war and political troubles that seemed to plague the verse. Terran, his parents, his younger sister Val, and the rest of the simple people that lived on Reach were good, kind folk that never asked for any trouble and made an honest living in the steel mill that had become the moon’s only real export. Unfortunately for the peaceful people of Reach, trouble did seem to find them when raiders and bandits, passerby’s that looked to take advantage of such a small and quarrelsome bunch, began making small raids on the settlement, trying to take what they could to make a credit or two. It wasn’t long however, that the people of Reach fought back and Terran himself stepped up, being one of the few who had been trained in weapon proficiency, to take up arms to protect his home and the people that he shared it with. A small militia of sorts rose up on the moon of Reach, purchasing what weapons and ammunition they could from some merchants on nearby planets, and forced the bandits out of their home. Afterwards, Reach’s population began to take security and safety on as one of their greater priorities and hired professional guards to come in, ensuring that the people were safer than ever. This endeavor, though, put a stretch on the small moon’s finances and the added population, as well as the repairs of damages caused by the conflict, began causing things around Reach a little more difficult for the people. Rations were placed on food and water supplies and the local school was shut down to prevent any unnecessary spending. The school shutting down was the last straw for Terran, who’s younger sister Val was still a student at the time. It was then that Terran made the decision to leave Reach, seeking work off planet in order to make more money in order to help his family out, in particular hoping to manage enough to hire a personal teacher for his sister. He wasn’t the most educated man in the verse, nor was he the most experienced, but he had held on to his simple, family oriented philosophies, and his was willing to work hard. He figured that he would pursue a job in personal security, seeing as though that was really all that he was familiar with. He was a good shot, and was willing to kill in the line of duty, but he wouldn’t take the life of an innocent person; he upheld a sense of honor and would only do what could benefit himself and his family back home in an honest manner. Soon after his departure from his home, Terran found work aboard a ship named Phoenix.
(Sorry it’s so basic, I can go back and plump it up if I need to I’ve just been busy with other things.)

If there was no Bloodshed in this broken world there would be no need for revolution; for Vendetta.

Please note that I've added a field to the character skeleton. Make sure you add what the character's attitude toward the Alliance is. My character, much like Mal Reynolds, is rebellious. Inara in the show 'supported unification'. So please give me just a few words about your character's attitude toward the Alliance. Thanks!

Looking forward to seeing these characters!

Guys, I know there is some jostling around with characters so if anyone wants to swap roles or something, let's work it out.

    Name: Narcissus Del Rey
Attitude toward the Alliance: Lovely, as long as they pay up-front.
    Age: 27
    Gender: Male
    Occupation: Companion
Appearance: Narcissus is well-named; like all Companions he is immaculately groomed at all times and dresses only in the finest of fineries. His eyes are dark and almond-shaped, and his lips full, slightly pouting. He is tall, slender and willowy-limbed, his toned body seeming to glide across the floor when he walks. His skin is coloured like milky coffee - smooth, with no blemishes or scars - and his chin slightly pointed. His black hair is curly, falling in a fashionably artless fashion around his ears. His typical casual wear is a maroon, silken kimono and little else, wrapped around him in a scandalously suggestive fashion.
Brief history: Abandoned not long after birth and raised in a Companion temple, Narcissus Del Rey never particularly knew nor cared where he came from or what his heritage was. He grew up, he trained in all the typical Companion skills - politics, swordsmanship, diplomacy, pillow-talk - and was apprenticed under a different Companion before he became experienced enough to fly solo. For a while he worked in Alliance space - it was tougher to be a male Companion than a lady, since many of his male clients had reputations that would be damaged if their proclivities came to light, but he managed. Men often feel threatened by the idea of male Companions, meaning Narcissus has learned to fight a lot better than people expect from his decadent, flamboyant exterior. Sometimes his job was warming a bed, other times he was looking pretty while hanging off an arm, and other times he was used as a proxy in a duel. A few months ago, he encountered an old face; Lawrence, a former Companion student who had been Narcissus' friend at the Temple. But one day, Lawrence had disappeared before completing his training or being qualified a Companion. Worse, it seemed that whatever had happened to him had traumatized the boy, but he wasn't going to share. All Narcissus could do for him was take him in, make Lawrence his assistant and indentured servant, then hope for the best. Now they rent a little shuttle aboard the Phoenix as part of a mutually beneficial arrangement with the Captain.
Equipment: Duelling sword and pistol, collection of high-quality clothing and jewellery, communicator. Rents one of the Phoenix's shuttles from Genesis, which serves as his living quarters as well as independent transportation.

OiHarkin, before I can approve this I'll have to wait just a little to see my original players weigh in. There are a couple of crew spots that we're arm-wrestling over and I want to make sure everyone gets settled before finalizing new players. Sorry for the mess, it's kind of a construction area and this is where my impatience got us.
