Well, the game goes like this: there are five colors, White, blue, black, red, and green.each player has twenty life points, and the goal is to reduce the opponent to zero, though other means of victory are possible. to do so, you must use your cards, or spells. But wait, you can't just play any card in your hand! you must first have enough mana to cast it! To get mana, you must play a card called a land, which come in basic and advanced flavors (basic being, well, basic, and advanced having special effects) a land represents a place your wizard has visited and thus can draw power from. So let's say I play one plains (the white mana aligned land) card on my first turn. I have a Human creature I can summon for one white mana. How do I play it? To 'Pay' the cost I 'tap' the land I just played, or turn it sideways which, since it is a plains, gives me one white mana for the turn. I spend it to summon my human, whose stats are expressed with two numbers, just like all 'creature' cards. these guys attack your opponent to deal damage, and are the common method of acquiring victory. he has 2/1, two power, one toughness. When he attacks, he deals two damage, but has only 1 toughness, which is health for creatures. When I summon a creature, it has 'summoning sickness' and can't do anything until my next turn. I can also only play one land a turn, so my turn is effectively over.
The other guy's turn, he plays a forest, the green land, and summons a 1/3 lizard for one green. he ends his turn. Now, my human's sickness wore off, and I 'Untap' the land I tapped earlier, allowing me to use it again. I play another plains, but all of the other cards in my hand cost three or more, so I'm stuck with my human. I can attack now, so I do. when you attack, you can't attack specific creatures like you do in Yu-Gi-Oh, you target the other player, who can use his creature to block mine, which he does. Though his creature has summoning sickness, creatures with summoning sickness can block. Our creatures deal damage to each other simultaneously. My 1/2 versus his 1/3. my creature deals 2 damage, not enough to equal or exceed his creatures three toughness, so his lizard survives. his lizard deals only one damage, which unfortunately is enough to equal my creatures toughness, so the human is destroyed and sent to the graveyard. once combat has ended, his lizard heals all the damage he took, operating once again at full strength. Now I have nobody to block him, so I will at least take 1 damage from his next attack.
And play goes like that until one of us is reduced to zero. there are other kinds of cards called instants and sorceries, which have one time effects, similar to magic cards in Yu-Gi-Oh. Sorceries are different from instants in that they can only be played during certain parts of your turn, while you can play instants during an opponents turn. and those are the basics. Any questions?
