I feel... inspired. While I have yet to see the movie release of Les Miserables, the soundtrack and trailers have stirred memories of when I first saw the production on stage many years ago. I remember devouring the whole of Victor's Hugo's book in a matter of days, only to re-read it over and over again during the following weeks. In typically teenage angst, I always imagined myself as Grantaire, drunk and cynical but still following the charismatic Enjolras to the very end. As an adult and history buff, I am also captivated by the events that led to the glorified but failed June Rebellion of 1832, a rebellion that lasted all of one day
At the same time, and rather unintentionally, I have been re-reading Terry Pratchett's "Night Watch." The citizens of Ankh-Morpork arose against the tyranny of Lord Winder and the brutality of his secret police. While it has its comedic slant, there is a rather serious tone that underlies the laughs.
While this is just an interest check (as I myself need to clear my calendar to ensure consistent posting), I am quite serious in this my desire: to have a group of characters rebel against the oppressive government and fight for something greater than themselves, doomed though they may be. I am not looking to start a fandom thread as per se. My intent is not to recreate the scene of Valjean creeping along with Marius thrown over his shoulder, nor that of Vimes repelling attackers in vengeance for his 'egg with soldiers.' There were other barricades erected during both the June Rebellion and the Glorious 25th of May that were not occupied by or even seen by the books' respective protagonists. It could even be some other event, one that the players create themselves in an original setting. This would be very much a sandbox type of rig, with all members contributing both to the plot and with NPCs.
So what say you all? "Will you join in our crusade?" Or will you do the job that didn't have to be done and wear the lilac today?
