I'm toying with the idea of making a secondary character for one of the lesser noble positions in the empire but I'm afraid of a conflict of interest.

No one here is making "secondary" or "side" characters to further the goals of their main character. If you make a character, you're making a character, a person in this universe who acts based on their beliefs and personality. I don't want any petty bullshit about trying their hardest to make their character "win", because this isnt about winning or competing, just to have fun. I am going to be making a Norse character at one point, who will have apposing goals of my Pontetate character. Why? Because i'm making a good fucking story, not competing with anyone. Cut the shit, bros.

Eh. I personally think the guy would get caught by the inquisition right away. Believing magic to be a sign of divine favor isn't very bright. None of the religions have a precedent for that and anyone can learn it with proper training.

And what do you mean "anyone can learn that"? Is that being magic? No, not anyone can learn magic. It requires a stupid amount of mental training as well. In addition, when casting spells, you dont announce to the world you're using magic- the peasants wouldnt know the difference between a miracle and a spell.
