You wake up in a cold cage, shackled hands and feet. Someone comes in with a plate of food and a pitcher of water. As you pig out, the bringer-of-food says something about how if you win, you are able to train. You slow your eating down to a stop in regard to the emptiness of your plate and look twice at the man. He has a gold ring in each ear. Wait...that's the mark of a gladiator. Why is the man picking you up? Why is there a gate there? Oh hell no, you my friend, have been taken into slavery and thrown into the gladiators ring. Here it is win or die, and no one wants to die.
This is going to be a slightly Roman-based gladiator RP. This means that although some ideas will be from the Roman era, this doesn't have to follow a Roman path and the empire will only be based on the Roman empire.
This RP is going to be slightly stat based. Nothing major like dice rolling or checks or anything, just a level system with abilities, skills, and points for catagories. This will be further explained in the Character Build section.
This RP is going to be heavily fantasy based. Such as a high level gladiator may fight a gryphon or a chimera. This may also include dragons. Playable races will be described in the Character Build section.
There will be no magic. At least right away. Magic may be learned by higher level gladiators, but I haven't thought of mechanics for it yet.
Gladiators will start off with a simple melee weapon of their choice. Throughout the game, the gladiators may acquire more weapons. After a few levels, magical, enchanted, cursed, or blessed weapons may become available to gladiators based on their choices and skills. No guns, and no magic right away. Ranged weapons may be offered but not right away.
The arena will be based off of the coliseum, meaning that the arena can be changed in many ways without magic. That being said, the arena manager may use illusionary magic to do things like hiding pits, creating fake walls, making water look solid, etc.
A lot of fighting will be against NPCs and will be turn based. I will most likely control later level NPCs but to help things flow, lower level NPCs may be controlled by the person fighting them.
If two people wish to fight, they must both PM me about it and then the fight will start with an introductory post. These two will duke it out until I PM both parties, telling them who won and who lost. I will take attributes and the actual fights into effect. The players may then create a more theatrical ending than "Rocky won. Yay!"
The main rules for combat will be taken from Arena rules from the Arena Basics page.
Melee
Writing melee combat is a fine art form. No matter what kind of character you play, no matter if you’re fighting hand-to-hand or with weapons, you must be able to describe every move your character makes. You must be able to describe the angle their fist as it flies through the air, how their body shifts weight as they move, foot placement; anything that you would need to take into consideration in a real fight.
Think in terms of Fight Club rather than Dragonball Z. Once again, the key words are “realistic” and “logic.”
Could your character throw one million punches at the speed of light? No. Could they throw one million punches? Yes. But that would be stupid. Once you have written what action your character has taken, you are locked into that decision. That means that while Person A is throwing one million punches, Person B could be doing anything during that time period, and Person A could not stop throwing punches, since they had written that that is what they had done. Obviously, that would make it very difficult for Person A to defend from an attack that Person B might launch.
There are certain cases, however, where an attack may be written out, but not necessarily launched, fairly allowing the attacker to back out before they are locked into an attack. This is done in the form of an if/then statement.
Using If/Then Statements
Let’s say Person A wants to launch a two-prong attack, but wants to maintain the opportunity to back out of the second part of the attack in the event of a successful counterattack to the first part. This would be done in the form of an if/then statement. I’ll create a very simple example, minus the flair so that you can see exactly what I mean..

So now, if the punch doesn’t land, the kick never happens. This allows Person A more versatility, instead of locking them into a long attack which would leave them in a position from which they could easily be counterattacked by Person B.
Forcing Hits
Forcing a hit is the act of writing out an attack and the impact. This is the cornerstone of the forums fighting system. A player may not force hits on anther player’s character under ANY circumstance. If Player A launches an attack, it is completely up to Player B if they take the hit. Essentially, the entire goal of forums fighting is to corner an opponent via writing into taking a hit that they can’t logically or realistically avoid. Yet again, the words “realistic” and “logic” come into play.

As I have stated before, this RP will allow nearly any race, including but not just D&D, WoW, LOTR, Elder Scrolls, other RP's, or any publication. The only way I will say no to a race is if I think the race you choose would give you a complete advantage over the other players or make a well trained human seem like paper. If you would like to play as a specific race that would give you too much of an advantage, PM me with a possible disadvantage you could add that would make things more fair. Also, if there is any doubt that the race you choose won't be accepted, ask me first. If the race you choose won't be allowed, it will be placed on a list and, with your permission, may appear later as an NPC. When you find a race you would like, PM me a link to a page with it's statistics or description, or a description of the race so I may copy and paste it to a list here.
Each race will also have Racial modifiers as they will be called. These are basically a freebe ability you get when you choose a race. After a yet undetermined amount of levels, this may increase in power/duration/charges per day. I will list them here as people choose more races. If you have a question as to what a racial modifier would be for a specific race, ask me. I won't make them unless asked or someone chooses the race.
Orc - Berserker's Rage - Do double damage and recieve half damage, but intelligence and wisdom are each decreased a rank. Short period of time once per day. If one is the bottom rank, they get a bottom tier -1 rank.
Human - Exp bonus - Basic humans gain experience a little bit faster than everyone else, causing them to level up faster.
Redguard - Adrenaline Rush - All stats are increased by one rank and all abilities become a little bit stronger if applicable. All but combat skills drop -1. Short period of time twice per day.
Norn - Spirit of the Wild: You ask favor of one of the Great Spirits to grant you boons during battle.
Bear: You tranform into an anthropic bear and gain a +2 to strength but -2 to wisdom.
Wolf: You tranform into an anthropic wolf and gain a +2 to intelligence but -2 to constitution.
Raven: You transform into an anthropic raven and gain +2 to wisdom but -2 to intelligence.
Snow Leopard: You transform into an anthropic snow leopard and gain +2 dexterity but -2 to charisma.
It is physically and mentally impossible for anyone to ever call on more than one of the Great Spirits at once. Lasts for an entire encounter then must recharge for 24 hours.
Argonian - Gain the True Breath ability for free, also the sense of smell is increased through this ability, but will not be affected by cover up smells and such.
Orc
Human
Redguard
Dragons
Demons
Angels
Gods
Levels will not be gained from a certain amount of damage scored or battles fought. It will be based mainly on my discretion. Big events, multiple battles, and the like will help you to level up.
Abilities are unique things that a character can do that will give them some sort of an advantage over other players. Players will choose one ability to start with and will gain more as they level up. Abilities will also increase in strength over time.
The following is a general list.
Super Stat- Pick one skill. That stat can be doubled for a short time.
Invisibility - The gladiator will become invisible for a short period of time.
Claws - If your character does not have claws, they gain them. This will be like how Wolverine's claws work. If your character has claws, the character can make them incredibly strong and sharp.
Intimidation - Gladiator can intimidate other characters between his level and 3 levels below with a fear strong enough for them to run and other characters below 3 levels below the character with a paralyzing fear.
Speak with Animals - Gladiator may understand animals and they understand the gladiator, but do not speak as you and I
God's Blessing - You must choose a deity to worship. A few sample deities will be given, but if anyone has any deities with a page I can look at, send me the link. After you choose a deity, you will be PMed with a list of divine spells to choose from. This also opens the door for divine intervention.
Flight - If the gladiator cannot fly, they are granted the power of levitation, but it will not last long and will be clumsy and slow. If the gladiator can fly, they are automatically upgraded with speed and skill of flight.
True sight - Can see through illusions, in dark, smoke. In short, nothing obstructs vision.
True breath - Can breath under water, in gases, smoke, strong smells, you name it.
Racial - Each race may have specific benefits, I will PM whoever choses this one a list of choices.
Weapon mastery - Become extremely proficient with one weapon.
Illusion - create a small illusion such as changing color of something or creating a small illision of a wall about the size of the character.
Empower ability - the next ability that your gladiator gets will be more powerful than stock
Battle cry - Either empower allies within short range with 1.5x their normal skills or hinder enemies with a 1.5x decrease.
Beast Slayer - Gain extra strength and constitution (equal to one rank higher, if already top listed, gets upgraded to top tier+1) when fighting non-mythical beasts.
Heal self - Able to reverse some of the damage caused in a fight.
Heal ally - Able to heal some of the damage to an ally during a fight
Drain life - Able to drain life from an opponent, if you have Heal Self or Heal Ally, you may channel this drained life force into either yourself or your ally respectively.
Return Soul - Able to send your soul towards the path of death to search for a recently deceased person, possibly leading them back to their body, if they choose so.
Create Undead - You may reanimate a recently deceased body as a minion.
Self Undead - If you are about to die, you may come back as a reanimated undead. Your intelligence and wisdom will drop to equal at the bottom. If you die in this state, you are truly dead.
(PM me with any other ideas)
Skills are more general than abilities as everyone has the same skills. Each character has different advancements in different skills. Each player gets five points to start the game and will gain more as they level up.
The following is a list of skills.
One-handed
Two-handed
Archery
Block
Armor
Speech
Stealth
Stamina
Gladiators will each have six stats. You should list these stats in order of they are in according to your character. Such as a former boxer may have their highest stat as strength and their lowest as intelligence.
Strength - How strong you are. Push, pull, carry. Damage per blow. General speed and stamina
Constitution - Defense. Resistance, mental and physical to poisons, torture, etc. General health
Dexterity - Quickness. How efficiently you move on land, water, air. Agility
Intelligence - Book smarts. General memory. How quick you catch on. Seeing patterns, lore, words, numbers
Wisdom - Common sense, creativity, Problem solving
Charisma - Social skills. Card games, manipulating people, lie, inspire things
(There is a phrase I have always like to tell the difference between Intelligence and wisdom: An intelligent man knows how to kill a dragon with his bare hands. A Wise man knows better than to try it)
Tarvo
The idea behind the Astral Harbingers is that the worshipers are kind of priest/mage/scientists. They study many disciplines in order to become well rounded in their education, and be better able to understand the three Harbingers. They can choose a specific deity to focus upon, but all are required to contemplate on all three.
Chaos:Chaos was the first Harbinger, bringing reality into existence. He manifests as a night sky without stars, instead a bunch of swirling whirlpools piercing the night sky. He also manifests as a tempest. Of the three Harbingers, he's by far the most powerful, capable of destroying all of existence. It's just a matter of him being incapable of deciding to do so, as it goes against the very core of his reason for being, to perpetuate existence.
Worshipers of Chaos often do so for the sake of deeper enlightenment into the mind of Chaos. They are capable of HORRIFYING destructive magic, but these go unused due to a vow of pacifism.
Order:Order builds off of Chaos to form stars, planets, etc. He built the rules for existence, and although Chaos made existence, he made the universe at large. Order prefers to appear in simple forms, such as a gauntlet, or a single star in the sky.
Worshipers of Order seek to understand Physics, the laws he created. They are the most "scientist" like worshipers, and are granted little magic. They don't have a vow of pacifism, and often are well trained warriors. They're the most useful priests.
Life:Life builds off of her brothers in order to breathe a new form of existence into the worlds. The stars ignite at her breathe, and worlds sprout the beginnings of Life. It is said that with her breath she breathed out all the other gods, and gave them the power to create life. She only depicts herself as anything when a worshiper dies, and when she speaks to her worshipers she simply speaks through a nearby form of life. Her depiction is as a cloaked skeleton with a scythe. Death is seen as a part of life.
Life worshipers do so in order to help others and more understand the laws of life, an extension created by Life to Order's rules of existence. Some speak of another group, Laws of Death, but these are seen as a myth. Life worshipers are granted magic to heal and remove life. The most powerful can bring others from the brink of death, or can combine life and death to become sacred forms of undead.
(PM me links and names for dieties if you have any please.)
