    HOLMES I NEED U

You're like a tablet wizard from what I've seen, so I have some really noob questions.

    1. How do I "shut off" the tablet when not in use? By just unplugging the USB cord? And if so, must I redownload the Bamboo Dock when I plug it back in?

    2. Is there a specific thing I must do or something I have to download to use the tablet in GIMP?

    3. Is there an easier way of centering my work area with my monitor screen than just resizing the workable area in preferences and eyeballing it? Because right now my Pen makes the arrow go to the right third of my screen when I place it at the center of the workable area (this was when I had it set to Monitor, now on Portion and slightly better).

Is your tablet set to mouse mode or w.e the other mode is called? Mouse mode means it acts like a mouse (clearly) in that you drag the pen across, lift it up, and start dragging again to get all the way across; while the other mode means that the right side of the tablet equals the right side of the screen, same for the left, etc etc

No, Pen mode. The tutorial and the video I found trying to figure out how to center it both said I should leave it on Pen for the first few days so I can get used to it, then switch to mouse and see which I like better.

I'll put that tablet in a box, then place that box inside of another box, and then I will mail that box to myself, and when it arrives-HAHA!

As soon as I plugged mine it, it worked as a mouse for my whole computer.
But by "shutting it off", I just unpluged the USB. Everything was still on my computer afterwards. (Make sure you use the second disc it gives you. Has Photoshop Effects and stuff on it.)
And as soon as I opened GIMP, it worked. It takes some time to get use to the pen-screen-desk orientation, but it works like a charm. I'm coloring right now, actually.

    No idea about number 3.

My tablet currently accumulates dust, because I've been doing nothing but relying on pencil and paper.

1.) Once the tablet is plugged in (and you've downloaded any necessary drivers), it should just work. When finished, you should be able to just unplug it and go back to normal. I've never used a Bamboo tablet specifically, but I can't imagine you would have to redownload or reinstall anything after simply unplugging the device. (Unless your commuter is really screwy or something.. Once your drivers are installed, I'd think you'd be good to go. Simply unplugging the tablet shouldn't change that.)

2.) I've never used Gimp, but you shouldn't have to download anything to use the tablet in any program, aside from the already mentioned drivers. You may have settings within Gimp to customize your user experience where the tablet is concerned, but that's very likely it. (For instance, in Painter, I have options for the program to track my specific pen stroke method, which tailors each of my brush stokes to whatever brush I happen to be using, and optimizes the program's performance for me. Gimp may or may not have settings along those lines, I'm not sure. Otherwise, the bulk of your tablet settings should be under your system option, near where you'd probably find you other basic computer settings.)

3.) I'm not sure on this one, honestly. I work on a Cintiq, so my whole screen is a workable area and I haven't had to deal with the issue you're describing. (So I don't really know what to recommend for help, aside from simply trying to locate a solution for the Bamboo through Google.)

Hope you have fun with your new tablet! Be sure to post up some work we can check out. ^_^
