Personality: Outside of battle Artori is a fairly pleasant man with a slightly serious disposition and while he doesn't have too many friends, the ones he does have he is close with and very happy to help in near any way he can. Despite being a member of the Onmitsukido, he believes that his loyalties should be first to his friends and second to the seireitei for if he cannot protect or assist them then what worth is protecting their haven?
Now, on the flip side Artori has a fairly cool disposition, but with sufficient goading he can become angered. Even when angered he tends not to go the route filled with uncontrollable rage, but rather to become cold and unfeeling, at least it seems like it. When going into battle Artori changes somewhat, though his original morals stay essentially the same, he becomes a man of fierce and efficient method. The instinctual beast that dwells inside all strong warriors is unleashed against his foes, and while it does not seem like this, it is essentially the truth.
SpoilerGrowing up in the 75th district of the rukongai, Artori has been through hard times. Forced to scrounge for food, and stay safe at only the equivalent age of 10, he was between a rock and a hard place. No place to really run, he had to stand his grown many a time against people who knew very little of morals and only of survival. Yet, he stayed strong to protect his 3 younger siblings and eventually his aging parents. He however was considerably lucky as he had witnessed several occassions of shinigami coming to exterminate hollow who had managed to intrude. He watched with amazement, of course that was also the day that his mother and father died trying to protect them from hollows.
Artori became quiet for many years prior to that and whenever approached, or his siblings threatened he cut down his opponents with impunity and no care for their lives. He began to make a name for himself and he took his siblings with him to travel inwards towards the seireitei's walls. He was tired of living in the violence, and he was tired of his siblings having to be in constant fear for their survival, it wasn't healthy and it wasn't right.
The shinigami academy was the destination, but before he got there many things happened. 1 of his siblings perished in a battle he could barely win, she was picked off by the stragglers. This was the day he lost his temper for the 1st time, the entire bandit group of 20 men were slaughtered without a second thought. It had been their leader who had given them trouble, but he was no more. With the reishi of his kin's aggressors scattering in the wind he led his last two siblings on.
Many more battles followed this, but he was growing more and more skilled in the art he had learned to call Hoho. By the time he reached the gates to the seireitei he was already what one could call experienced with Hoho. While his skills were self taught and unrefined, it was still impressive. He and his 2 siblings, 1 female and the other male, were taken into the seireitei. The 2 were protected and Artori learned in the academy. It took him all of 4 tries to enter the corps, but when he did his potential and his skill were very evident. He was recruited first to the 2nd division and eventually the Onmitsukido.
It has taken him a very long time, but eventually he was appointed the lieutenant of the 7th division as well as an attendent there. The Onmitsukido is of course forced to keep an eye on the gotei 13's divisions. He has grown rather fond of Reihai and the division she leads. Her elegance and prowess in battle has impressed him countless times and he is supremely grateful that he was assigned to her division. By his observation of her, and with time, he has come to gain some more skills in zanjutsu, in fact he believes that without her as an example he would have never truly developed any considerable level of skill in sword play.
SpoilerHoho Master: Disputed only by Koda sotaichou in his skill in Hoho, Artori is the fastest, most skilled, and effective in the techniques of footwork in the entirety of the seireitei. Not only this, but he has even bettered techniques that already existed as well as adding some of his own to the list. He has even formerly been given the title 'god of the flash' which has not been handed down for quite a long time.
Zanjutsu Expert: His only other skill that is anywhere near mastery aside from the art of hoho, Artori's zanjutsu mastery is considerably impressive, especially considering the fact that he is lieutenant level. He is skilled in both the normal zanjutsu techniques and somewhat in battojutsu allowing him to be rather effective. Additionally he can wield the sheath of his blade skillfully enough that he has been seen to sheath other people's katana inside of the sheath rather than his own.
Stamina and Durability Master: Artori can take a hit, and another one, and another, but keep fighting despite the damage. He is well known for this, though he is seldom actually hit by people due to his foremost strength: Hoho.
Spiritual Pressure: Artori's reiatsu is rather unique as though it is not massive and it is actually average, it appears as barely a wisp to those attempting to sense him. Additionally, people trying to gauge his strength from reiatsu alone will be sadly mistaken as his spiritual pressure is strictly condensed and distributed around his body in a tiny 2 foot field. Sensing him from other realms is essentially impossible.
Hakuda: He essentially refuses to use hand-to-hand for whatever reason, it just doesn't appeal to him. He has been told that he however has the potential to be fairly good at it.
Sensory Capabilities: Horribly ineffective at sensing, Artori can only sense people within around a half a mile or so from his location in a hemisphere. This is evidently caused by the unique state of his reiatsu. In fact, this very handicap has had him obtain a certain object from the 12th division in order to supplement the fatal flaw.
Kido: He is absolutely inept in kido and is said to have absolutely zero potential to learn it what so ever.
SpoilerIshiki(Awareness): Created specifically for him by request from the 12th division, this device is an ingenious creation and strangely it was devised personally by Shougaku. Essentially this senses spiritual pressure to the most minute degree as well as the largest and while it can generally gauge power it cannot do much else. The thing that makes it unique is the fact that it is not technically a solid. The object has one core point that is implanted somewhere inside of Artori's body. This core point stems out tiny openings across his skin and makes a single connection to his brain. This allows it to near instantaneously feed him the information so he can adapt accordingly. The small openings or pores release a unique kind of invisible reiryoku that is essentially undetectable. By conducting through reishi or reiatsu in the area it senses where there is reiatsu and where there isn't. Once someone's unique reiatsu signature has been sensed once they can always be located.
Seigen(Restraint): Located on his left arm and back of his hand, this bracer is constructed of a unique metal that is flexible, resilient, and incredibly dense. The markings designed onto its surface are carved out of a thin surface of seki seki stone. This stone is the same kind of stone used to sculpt the walls of the seireitei and it essentially has the same effect. The bracer is also augmented with a single kido that can be used only twice per battle before needing to effectively be recharged. The seki seki stone, like all seki seki, has the effect of limiting reiryoku and reiatsu that comes into contact with it. This means that even a captain level zanpakuto cannot cut it as the power behind it is reiatsu and reiryoku based and is thus restrained and drained. By placing the palm of his glove hand on a person, or using the kido on his sheath and then sheathing someone's blade, he can effectively restrain their reiatsu. If used on his sheath and then the sheath is used to take his opponent's weapon, then the weapon is sealed into the sheath and cannot be drawn.
SpoilerUtsusemi(Cicada, referencing their molting): It allows for a movement at great speed leaving an afterimage behind. The afterimage may even appear to have taken damage.
Hikou(Locust swarm): By using the foot work of shunpo and adding in approximately 5 extra steps with insane speed, he can effectively create what appears to be around 10-15 clones at once. These clones cannot do damage, and when attacked with a weapon they fade away. They tend to last only 5-10 seconds depending on the amount, the more made the quicker they fade. The truly frightening aspect of the technique is that in all actuality he is zipping back and forth to renew each clone as he moves towards an enemy. This allows him to prolong the technique and strike unexpectedly from any of the clones.
Suzumashi(Cricket): By taking two steps and then effectively jumping with the 3rd he propels himself into the air and then jumps off of it and down towards his target. The action of jumping shows him for a brief blur before he vanishes. This technique also refers to when he suddenly switches directions due to the similarity of a cricket jumping.
Harienju(Locust): By Reducing the steps of a normal shunpo and using his streamlined reiatsu to cut the air, he emits a sound that is akin to the sound a locust makes, but much more high pitched as he is going incredibly fast. While one might think the sound reveals his location, it does not, unless you can accurately predict his movement. This is due to the fact that the sound actually follows him, rather than being directly where he is, it is roughly a foot or so behind. This means he is at his destination before the sound is.
Ukishima(Floating mass): By using his shunpo into the air and then adding several steps as he moves again, he leaves behind an afterimage of himself that can actually do several movements. The frightening thing is he can execute an actual attack with this. The purpose is to however leave the moving afterimage, and follow up while the opponent focuses on that.
Hachidori(Hummingbird): One of the most advanced techniques at his disposal, this is named as such due to the blur of the technique being similar to that of a hummingbird's wings. Rather than using very few steps, he uses an excessive amount at around triple the normal speed. While this technique is taxing it leaves the impression of 1 to 2 paths of his blurred movement. This is exceptionally confusing to the eye as one cannot tell which one is him because all are blurred together in a line of movement.
Gen'you(Ghost of which the true identity is unknown): Considered the most impressive technique in Artori's arsenal, this is something of an enigma. Devised by Artori himself, he created a technique that effectively appears as if he fazes right in and out of objects and/or people. While this is not at all what he is doing, it is unnerving to see, and even worse to feel.
The technique works much like how Hachidori or Ukishima does, except at a higher level. This technique is said to be the fastest among his hoho thus far and has yet to be surpassed. By taking several steps forwards at high speed, back tracking, and then using momentum and gravity as he falls almost vertically, he gets so low that anyone else would fall on their face. Instead he moves and goes around his opponent near their feet. If they are standing in the air he can do so above or below them as well. This back tracking and immense speed causes his densely packed reiatsu to have to catch up. As he is already on the other side of his opponent, the reiatsu is forced to literally pass through and around them to reach its original location. To attack the blurred image that can be seen is ineffective without an exceptionally long weapon, and even then one must do so at an incredible pace as he may have already taken the steps backwards. So far the only person that has proven they can counter the technique, is his captain. This is not a testament to her speed however, though it is to her transcendental skill in zanjutsu.
Shimyaku o sendan(Shearing Wing veins[as in an insect's wings]): By studying the quincy's ability to gather reishi Artori has figured a way to use his extremely dense reiatsu to his greater advantage. By forcing reishi around him with his spiritual pressure he can cut away all atmospheric resistance to his movements and allow him max velocity to be reached in the blink of an eye. The reishi that is cut away from the air is forced to form, for the briefest of moments, into four jagged insectoid wings at his back which cause distortions as they continuously reform and erupt in bursts of reiatsu.
Ha-kō(Blade-shell): Utilizing a sub-ability he gained by studying both the quincy and Shougaku's Reiatsuhei, Ha-kō is a hardened shell of spiritual pressure with an outwards facing charge. This shell of spiritual pressure is only possible due to his intensely concentrated reiatsu which is already incredibly focused. Essentially this technique appears as a translucent silver shell of reiryoku that surrounds his body, it gained its name due to it being roughly the shape of a katana. This shell however cannot catch up with Artori's incredibly speed and so when it is displaced it condenses inwards into a much more focused 'blade-shape'. This causes it to be capable of cutting things as a follow up attack to Artori's intense speed.
Ha no toki en(Time of blade's edge): By focusing his reiatsu or reiryoku around his blade Artori can condense it and focus it even further than normal. Usually this is done for brief moments with only a fraction of his actually huge levels of spiritual pressure --seldom felt unless one is incredibly close to him. When utilized in this brief form it can send of nearly invisible attacks from his blade, or be used to lengthen the blade briefly. When used en full all of Artori's remaining presence vanishes and a single strike from his blade is enough to cut through a zanpakuto, and even the best of heirro.
...Their Speed is Nothing.
Zanpakuto Spirit Personality: Jiku, as it is called by Artori is a quiet thing. Quiet, if not entirely silent, Jiku despises vocalizing as it apparently does not suit it at all. Instead Jiku communicates through the look in its eyes and the way in which the body it forms modulates and flows. As Jiku is effectively genderless, it cannot be determined how it will sound when speak it may. The few times that Artori has heard Jiku speak it was with an alternation of male and female tones that eventually just lead to total androgyny. Jiku is definitely expressive, though not through words, and tends to keep to itself as communication is so difficult and thus so few can even understand. Regardless, Artori gets the impression that the spirit is exceedingly wise, not to mention vastly experienced and powerful in nature.
Zanpakuto Spirit & Inner World:
Shikai: Placing his right hand on the grip of his blade and the other near the opening of his sheath he says "Transverse,..." his blade is drawn in an instant and slashed horizontally from left to right. As his blade slashes it releases a dull silvery reiryoku in a dual purpose. The strike both travels towards his enemy and leaves a trail of reiryoku that expands outwards the further away from the slash it gets. By the time the slash is a single yard -3 feet- from his location he is completely shrouded by the energy. From within the silver fog of reiryoku he can be heard "...Jiku no Tamashi(Soul of Space-time)."
Abilities: It is the initial slash from Jiku no Tamashi that alludes to its unique ability. Essentially the reiryoku that exudes from the blade, though only lightly and in a smoke-like fashion from its edge, is a substance that weaves itself into that of time and space to allow alteration to occur. While within the bounds of this veil space can be warped to some extent. While it is apparent that the zanpakuto itself, nor Artori's will, can alter the shape or trajectory of the veil, it has been observed that specific movement's preformed during the use of Kensomaku or Namegusai kenso can alter the aforementioned variables.
SpoilerKensomaku(Precipice curtain): Using the veil that flows from the edge of his blade he slashes which sends an ever expanding area of reiryoku towards a location. The slash has a kind of reiryoku tail which continuously spreads out and fades as it loses the focus that slashing gave it briefly. It is through these areas that he travels to warp space slightly around himself in a temporary boost for his speed. Once the initial slash has stopped moving, either by hitting something, or by running out of reiryoku, its tail takes roughly 1-3 posts to completely fade. Traveling through the bounds of the attack's flowing tail of reiryoku amplifies his speed by roughly .5, this amount can increase to 1 with mastery. The effects of the slash are stronger if it hits someone from a closer range, the less distance it travels the less reiryoku it loses before reaching its target. When the slash hits something it imprints a cut by slightly warping the space on their body where it hits. Generally this draws absolutely no blood, but leaves a horrible wound and tissue beneath the area can be damaged very deeply or not at all depending on how far the attack traveled before hitting. If Jiku's blade traces any of the wounds left from a slash of Kensomaku, then the wound will open into whatever depth of cut that the tissue was damaged to.
Namegusai kenso(Worldly Precipice): By pressing the flat of his palm against the flat of the blade and drawing it across the horizontal blade with fingers pointed upwards, this technique is activated. Rather than releasing the veil, this technique draws it in and seals it inside of the blade. For the first 2 minutes the blade's cutting power and range is augmented meaning that an extra 5 inches in front of the blade's edge can be cut as if the blade was much thicker than it actually is. When used for a stab this 5 inches moves up to 10 and focuses at the tip of the blade allowing more range than normal. After the two minutes have passed the blade becomes unable to fully restrain the veil within its worldy form and it begins to leak reiryoku which travels around Artori's body until he is completely wreathed in it. The process that wreaths his body takes approximately 30 seconds and once he is wreathed all physical attributes relating to speed -including his perceptual ability and reaction time- are amplified by 2. After this amplification is preformed the attack can last for around 5 minutes before the sealed veil erupts from the blade and causes Utsuroi kenso. This technique can be used only once per shikai release.
Utsuroi kenso(Fading Precipice): After the successful completion of Namegusai kenso, this technique is forced into activation by the erupting veil. When the blade's ability to restrain the veil finally fails at the end of Namegusai kenso it erupts outwards from Artori, who is protected due to being previously wreathed in the reiryoku, and forms a sphere with a 30 yard(60 foot) radius. This area acts the same as Kensomaku's tail and boosts his speed by a .5x or 1x if he has mastered the aforementioned ability. This sphere gradually fades outwards for 7 minutes until it has completely vanished. People trying to escape the veil of this technique will find themselves emerging from another point and back within it showing that it is an enclosed space-time warp. As the warp fades outwards its self-contained state weakens and after around 3.5 minutes someone with sufficient understanding or power can pierce through and exit. Things attempting to enter from outside will either enter and be trapped, or will be transported to another point on its outside. This effect depends on Artori's mind state, if he is resolute to defeat his opponent single-handedly then it will not allow anyone in, on the other hand if he is not and his will is flagging they will be able to enter.
Bankai: Taking the sheath from his side, Artori focuses his reiryoku heavily around it and then twirls it so that the opening faces the earth. A thin spike forms from the opening and he plunges the sheath halfway into the ground. Using his blade, in his right hand still and, he raises it and grasps it with both hands proclaiming "Bankai...", and continues by thrusting it downwards with acute precision. The moment that the tip of the blade touches the blunt closed end of the sheath, an eruption of silver reiryoku spreads out from the spot in a horizontal curtain of gilded cloth-like energy. He presses down and the tip of the blade pierces the end of the sheath to enter the hollow therein. As the blade slides down, the fabric of reiryoku continues to expand outwards and thrum with increasingly intense fluxes of power. Artori's reiatsu begins to expand from his body in a gradual inclination.
As the blade's guard makes contact with the sheath a harsh silence engulfs the entire area. Artori looks up at his opponent(s) with an intense resolve and chants "Flowing we inhabit space and realize our potential; expanding we embody time's infinite scope only to fall prey to its superiority,...." His head looks down again and the fabric's ability to withhold powers reaches its limit. In a single instant the fabric expands outwards becoming a tattered manifestation of Artori's reiryoku which eclipses the sight.
These tattered remnants flow outwards in a rough vaguely uneven sphere which moves over everyone no matter how far they run. "...Jikū no tamashī: Genjitsu no himitsu nisu(Soul of space-time: Reality's hidden veil)."
Abilities: His weapon scattered to the wind to form a massive area where the veil that hides space and time is thin and malleable, Artori's bankai is an incredibly unique manifestation. Revealing the truth of Artori's reiatsu, his existence has been expanded to include the entire area affected by the veil. Within the area of his bankai Artori can freely manipulate the veil. To his hands the forces that are time and space become his tools to use freely. However the truly unique aspect of his bankai is strangely, that it lacks a weapon. Or so it would seem, for in truth Artori has in a sense become his own zanpakuto. While this is certainly not in the same sense as some who have reached another level of mastery, or even where they become their zanpakuto, it is truly something to be marveled upon. Due to the nature of Artori's zanpakuto, he has never actually seen his sword spirit, and communication is almost never on the audible level. Thus it makes perfect sense that in its true state, there is no directly obvious manifestation of Jiku's presence.
If one wants the bare facts they must now look to Artori himself, rather than to his surroundings for Artori is no longer JUST Artori, he is the living embodiment of the bond that exists between space and time, he is his own sword spirit. In this way Artori has gains the innate ability to faze between dimensional boundaries, to travel with no time passing, and to alter his own physical and energetic make up.
SpoilerTaishoku-nai to soto(Fading in and out): Artori, by simply exerting his will, can cause himself or anyone willing, to become an observer to a situation. Essentially this causes a person to act as time does, and be part of, but unreachable to all involved. By utilizing this technique, Artori can appear to faze out of reality to varying extents.He can also enforce this ability on objects that make contact with him or his reiryoku, but this does not translate to zanpakuto or otherwise soul-linked objects.
Shūsoku(Convergence): A distinctly necessary ability, Shūsoku allows Artori to gather and focus his reiryoku freely towards himself or any given point at will. Strangely though, this technique does not allow him to create defined shapes and it more depends on how he wills the reiryoku to move, rather than giving it definite form. This ability uses the aspect of accelerating time so as to cause the gathering of energies to a direction or point. The time acceleration is locked into the limited control of reiryoku and his own reishi. However, if he were to use this while in physical contact with an object or individual, he could potentially use it in that way.
Renzokutai no kenchiku(Continuum's architecture): The focusing and shaping ability of his bankai, this technique allows Artori to focus his reiryoku into shapes or forms to his will. The technique works by using space to alter the flow that time induces via Shūsoku. Since this technique is technically space altering, he can alter non-soul-linked objects as with Taishoku-nai to soto.
Judō-teki kansatsu(Passive Observation): While normally Artori must still rely on Ishiki to sense people around him, this passive ability modifies that giving the circumstances are correct. When Artori utilizes Taishoku-nai to soto on himself or anything else, Judō-teki kansatsu automatically becomes active. Essentially, Judō-teki kansatsu, allows those effected by Taishoku-nai to soto to be utterly and completely aware of everything within the area of Artori's bankai. Of course while they remain aware, and able to understand, all this information, they cannot act upon it while within the hold of Taishoku-nai to soto. Once the effected individual(s) have ceased in the use of the aforementioned technique, this ability also ceases to work and will only be available while Taishoku-nai to soto is active. This works through the fact that any who truly understand and experience the many streams of time's infinite flow cannot or have no will to truly effect those involved in the infinite experience that is reality.
Nisu no seiichi hōyō(Veil's subtle embrace): By closing his eyes and focusing the force of his will purely on his own body and eliminating all distractions from his mind, he will activate this technique. As he focuses, using Shūsoku and Renzokutai no kenchiku to defend himself as he does, the reiryoku of his bankai will gradually flow inwards and condense. Movement will become increasingly difficult till all is to a stand still. This process takes approximately 5-10 minutes and once it is complete his reiryoku will have vanished and the outside environment can be seen as if slightly ghostly. While still technically in the realm of his bankai, now it is easier to escape from the veil's embrace just as it is easier to enter.
However, the frailty of the veil is supplemented by Artori's own augmentation as now his body, before a manifestation of time and space in part, now entirely embody the three aspects of reality; time, space, and the veil between them. This causes Artori to effectively ascend to an entirely new state of being in which by contact alone he can alter and effect reality as it is known. Beyond this, his limitations are essentially removed so that his full potential may be realized. In particular Taishoku-nai to soto loses its limitations and Artori's speed is put to its highest state which is instrumented in his last two techniques: Matataku sonzai kara and Jikū no nisu - Iyachiko genjitsu ni.
Matataku sonzai kara(Wink from existence): Once he has entered Nisu no seiichi hōyō, the limitations of his potential are released and the ultimate speed is unleashed through his form. Matataku sonzai kara does not warp reality around the user like one might think. What it does do, is remove any and all variables that might impede the individual from movement, and then they move. In all truth, once Nisu no seiichi hōyō is active, the user no longer moves in the technical sense, in fact they remain almost totally stationary, it is reality that shifts to accommodate.
Jikū no nisu - Iyachiko genjitsu ni(The veil of space-time - To manifest reality): By visualizing his zanpakuto in its purest form, Artori can instigate the activation of this technique. Translating his near physical godhood in the state of Nisu no seiichi hōyō, into a weapon, Artori sacrifices the user of Matataku sonzai kara, and the physical superiority of that form in order to manifest the ultimate weapon. Once activated, him and his opponents will be ostracized from existence and surrounding them will appear to be the infinite void that dwells outside of all things. Within Artori's hand will be a single blade, the blade that represents all that exists, the blade of space-time, the manifestation of reality itself. If struck by this blade, your existence is torn by all consciousness and the part of you that was struck begins to fade and rejoin with existence. Artori will continue this until the individual(s) completely vanish(es) from the void. After this point, his bankai will lock off and he will be robbed of all his reiryoku for weeks on end with no access to his zanpakuto. Strangely, this technique does not actually kill or eradicate the existence of the one removed from the void, what it does do is cut them off from the reincarnation cycle and banish all of their power and self to the edges of creation. When Artori returns from the void, he and his opponent(s) will appear to be totally unharmed. However, with the exception of Artori, they will lack any essence and will be essentially invisible to the senses of energy. Not only this but taking them out and ending them for what would appear to be forever, is extremely simple after this is used and they become powerless against any and all that is. It is truly the ultimate weapon, one that cuts one off from them-self in a nearly permanent way.
