It was. Just about everything paranormal has already been explained away or can be by the fact that there is no reason for the modern world to believe that a soul exists anymore. A soul no longer has a function, because all of the human body's functions have already been attributed to something in the human body that we can see, if not thoroughly explained as of yet. So yeah, ghosts don't exist.

And it's for that reason that occult stuff is cool as fuck. Completely harmless, which makes it fun to pretend.
