    Ugh notfair.

I picture something in my head, put pencil to paper, and it turns out all wrong. So then I twist it all sorts of ways into something completely different than I had intended just so it will look good.

I usually just... come up with some General idea, then start... and see what I can come up with as I progress. XD

I draw some very general shapes (like say five or six ovals for a person) almost at random, and then just go from there.

ooo, I did a thing a couple of times where I drew a bunch of lines and shapes, then I connected them all and shaded it into an actual creature of some sort. Turned out pretty good. I have no idea where it went though.

I just start with a line and hope it goes from there somewhere.

Unless I'm using a reference picture. I like to work my way in with those.

I actually sometimes do something similar -- I'll draw a random scribble/squiggle and then try to turn it into something. It's a good exercise for loosening up.

I've found that, if I want to do a serious drawing, It's better to do some thumbnails and plan things out a bit, rather than just winging it. (Otherwise your composition and lighting usually suffer because you haven't made any definitive decisions..) I still have to force myself to do this sometimes.. I'll get excited and just want to start a piece, but taking the time to do the prep work always increases the result tenfold. (Patience is a virtue, I suppose. XD)
