Elisabeth then realized she still had stuff in her hand for Math, so she quickly went to her locker and she got there. She tried three times to get her locker open. "Stupid locker" she remarked then just said, "forget it" after the fifth try. She had to get to English, which was on the other side of the school. And she needed to hurry, she then shoved the things in her backpack still not realizing her notebook wasn't there, putting her bag over her shoulder with one swift movement then heading to her English class. As she walked in there wasn't many people who had made it to class in the time she had. There was about ten minutes till the class started. Then there was a bell that told the teenagers that they had ten minutes to get to their classes before being counted tardy. She walked inside, and sat in the back row. She wondered why the seating was different for every class. But she thought, maybe there were friends amonst the class that like to sit next to each-other and they would pourposly sit next to each other. So the teacher made it a point to switch them up. That wasn't a problem for Elisabeth. Seeing as she didn't have any friends. Besides that guy, but he was probably just being nice.

Des made his way slowly through the hallways, winding from group to group, exchanging pleasantries or a few quick words, and then moving on. He made it to English with a minute to spare, deposited his backpack, and began to talk with the girl who was sitting next to him. She laughed, fluttering her eyelashes, before being interrupted by Jacob, one of the four people in his closest group of friends. His shaggy sandy blonde hair was a mess, as ever, but he managed to make it look cool rather than unkempt.

He didn't notice Elisabeth, sitting four seats back, and one to the right of his desk.

"Welcome to the wonderful world of World Literature!" came a voice from the doorway. Every student came to silence, nad quickly returned to their seats. "I am your host, Katherine Langley." Mrs. Langley was a friendly teacher, and most students felt that they could get away with a lot near her, but she was particular about having students in their seats when the bell rang. Since it was the only real thing that she was particular about, most students were happy to oblige.

"Please get out our wonderful Mr. Dante Alighieri, and turn to the beginning of last nights assigned reading."

There was a general shuffle in the room as the students reached into pack or pile, and extracted the paperback. Des pulled his out easily from the front of his backpack, and set it neatly in the upper right corner of his desk.
Well I'm a sucker for fine Cuban cigars, The problem is I can't afford 'em, But last year I went and got myself a whole box, And just to be safe I insured 'em

I took out a policy against fire and theft, And then I hurried home, With a fifty-cent lighter I sat on my back steps, And I smoked 'em one by one

Two weeks later I went to see that insurance man, And I handed in my claim, With a straight face I told him that through a series of small fires, They'd all gone up in flames

They reviewed my case and they had no choice, But to pay me for what I'd done, And I took that check and bought a whole new box, And I smoked 'em one by one

Two weeks later this detective shows up, Tells me that company's pressin' charges, One speedy trial later they locked me up, On twenty-four separate counts of arson

And now I sit and I stare at a blank brick wall, Lookin' back on what I've done, To pass the time I've got some ten-cent cigars, And I smoke 'em one by one

Elisabeth had gotten all her things ready to start the class. Her notebook, her book, her pencil sharpened and ready to be used. All they needed was a teacher. She was good at this class, but not almost failing like her math class. Somehow it was easier to concept this than math. Algebra just seemed complicated to her. Her head shot up after hearing the teacher yell something from the doorway. She stayed quiet like she always was and waited for further instruction. She did as she was told and got the book out that they were assigned to read last night. Great, she hadn't done the assignment. She was too excited for school, plus her father made her stay up late to do some things she forgot about the assignment.

The class went by in the genral blur that English class was usually rendered to. It was better than most, for Mrs. Langley was good at getting the students interacting with her and with each other, but Dante made it hard. His verses of poetry were more intelligible than Shakespeare, but when Mrs. Langley got all excited and tried to show the brilliance of a particular word, it only caused most of the students to become lost.

Des scribbled willingly in his copy, jotting down notes on the things that the other students saw, the things Mrs. Langley pointed out, and some of the things he only speculated on.

With five minutes left in class and the section of reading having been thoroughly analyzed, Mrs. Langley called out the pages that needed to be read for tomorrow, students packed up, and began to mill by the door. I twas only at this point that Des noticed Elisabeth.

He forced his reaction down, both surprised to see her, and frustrated at himself for not having taken the time to notice the faces of everyone in his class. It was early in the year, but that was no right for him to forget.

In fact, now that he thought about it, she was in his basketball and social studies class as well. And his Chemistry class. They followed each other around the school all day, and yet they may as well have been in completely separate classes for all they interacted.

Well, it was time to change that. He wandered his way over to her, dismissing Jacob's call with a wave of the hand.

    "Do you like Dante?"
