Long before there were people, or even life to roam the planets, there was nothing. It was when the planets were created that the first DreamMakers came to be. These DreamMakers helped create a new world, a world for all of the planetary dreams and those within them. As primitive creatures were introduced so were their dreams, and the DreamWorld expanded. Man’s evolution brought even more of this expansion, more growth and as Earth drastically changed, so did the DreamWorld. Makers used Runners who would always live in the regions created by Makers and explored by Dreamers.

Connecting the real world and the dream world are gateways. Runners are there to ensure that their dreamers make it to the right door ever night in order to wake up. Should they fail, they face the very real danger of dying and joining the shadows of the dream world. Internal gateways connect every dream region to the next, like a complex grid or city. At the center of the city are where the oldest dreammakers reside, watching over and creating new regions for the entire world.

Dream runners would never be allowed to interfere with the dreams, or those in them. Their main purpose would be to protect the dreamer from dream demons. It was these demons, the souls of dreamers to never wake up or dreamers who were killed in their region when their runners failed, that would necessitate runners.

Dreamrunners work in squads that are overseen by older generation runners. Ten squads are presided over by yet and older generation. This continues up until the makers, and each level of runners are accountable to the group above them.

From here, which direction would you like to go?

So glad you liked it! I kind of figured that we would need to start coming up with some sort of back story, however little, about the inner turmoil of the higher end dream makers. Most likely, there could be a particular dream maker who went rouge, wanting to expand to the real world but being overruled, who left and has been building up demons on the side. The large group of dream makers do their best to keep it hidden from the runners so they don't lose faith in their leaders but they know a war of sorts is coming. What do you think?

Hm. Well, as a DreamMaker he would know that without subjects to dream he wouldn't exist at all. How about he gets corrupted and ends up turning into a MareMaker and begins aiding the nightmares in an attempt to "cleanse" the Dreamworld of the weakness that's plagued it since its inception: not wanting to take advantage of the gateways to put humanity into a permanent sleep so that they're free to exist. With this he can garner some power with sympathizers and people who don't know that they wouldn't be able to evolve at all, or even exist without the dreamers themselves evolving.

Wow, that was kind of confusing.

Or, in following yours, perhaps he believes that the 'real' world is the fake one and that he must show the Dreamworld that they are 'real' which aids his insanity. And he's willing to do anything, since he believes himself to be right.

Either way, DreamMaker goes batshit nuts.

You're totally right about having to somewhat co-exist. I love the idea about having him turn into a MareMaker. I suppose before, it could have been that when demons slipped past Runners or some other similar slip up would cause a nightmare, but they could be happening more and more recently because of this crazy DreamMaker.

Oh, what kind of character were you planning on playing by the way? I kind of figured I might double up with a Dreamer and a higher-up DreamMaker and get to stories running together, but that's open to change depending on what you were planning on doing.

The origins of nightmares could be dreamers souls that were tortured in reality, attempting to find peace in dreaming and getting stuck - lost and angry. Which creates these 'demons'.

I wasn't really sure. I have my dreamer picked out; my character from that short story I mentioned. Then a DreamRunner of course, it makes sense to have a hand in each area to develop the story itself. I don't suppose you have a favored Character Skeleton we could use to flush things out further? We can both take turns using the MareMaker, perhaps people in the real world start to notice an increase of dreams. Maybe a group of neuroscientists?

Ah, right, okay well I don't mind using multiple characters, most times I insist actually so that works. I don't normally use CS so actually not really, but I can always whip one up really fast if you'd like, unless of course you had one.

I was just going to have my character notice an increase in nightmares which would be attributed to something in the real world but would cause turmoil and such, but I think the idea of neuroscientists could be cool. What if our dreamers were part of some sleep study of some sort?

I don't. Well, I have one for my dreamer but that's because I was really anal about keeping track of everything. I may do them for my own sake, but it shouldn't really be a problem.

The sleep study idea works for me, would make a bit of sense. Perhaps in light of the increase of nightmares it's a government funded deal as well.

Okay, let me know if you want a CS for any of my characters as well. Was there anything else you wanted to plan/ figure out before we began?

I don't believe so. I think we're all set.
