@ KV - That's cute, I only have a small note. The bottom of his clothing is bothering me. (It just looks slightly awkward to my eyes. Not sure if it's like that in the original or what, but I included two options to consider if it's not.) Otherwise, I like the simplicity of the style. It's fun.

Yes, I noticed how weird that edge was only later. The origignal's like this:


It looks a lot more 'natural' (as far as this comes close to being natural).

Also. Do you have any idea when you are going to be streaming again Holmes? Or is there a place I can look up old sessions?

Yes, the bottom hem in the original looks better. (Less awkward. That character is too funny, though.. I like the simplicity/oddness of the design.)

I may stream in a little bit, actually. (I got my work done early today and sent out client samples, so I'm waiting to hear back and can't continue until I hear back from them at this point. Might stream early as a result.) As for looking up the old sessions, I don't record the streams, so there's nowhere to really do that. (Recording lags my brushes so I just don't bother.)

EDIT: Yes the character's awesome. His way of thinking is exactly the same as the way he looks. If you'd speak dutch I'd recommend you to watch an episode of the show. Maybe I'll add subtitles to the one I already uploaded.

@ Hellis -- Sorry, I missed the piece you posted earlier when I went through the others! (Damn hider tag.. Glossed right over it! XD)

It's a bit too rough to really say much about it, but I'd suggest trying to sketch less.. messy. By using such a thick black line to sketch with, you're making headaches for yourself when you either go to paint over it or eventually delete it. (Because, if your lines are that thick, where are you considering the edge to be? Is it the inside of the line or the outside? It makes a big difference for your proportions and anatomy when choosing one way or another, but if you use smaller lines, there's less margin for error, if that makes sense.) It's difficult to tell form when there are scribble marks defining edges; that's not to say you can't sketch loosely, but loosely and messily are two different things. If you clean it up some, you'll find the quality of your drawings improving, as well as your sense of proportion.

Otherwise, the character looks like it could be an interesting design.. I'd be curious to see a more fleshed out version.

It's coming along. Watch your values on the grass near the water -- they're almost exactly the same. (Unless you're planning on adding brighter highlights to the grass afterwards, like you're probably going to do with the tree to get that to stand out against the clouds where the values are similar, then ignore me. XD)

Yea, I'm considering Dodging the grass some with color dodge, using that kind of peach light. Though, I'm kind of worried how that might look. hmm... I don't want it to stick out TOO much. but.. it is right there against the light too.. so the fact that it kind of blends value wise with the water... doesn't bug me a whole lot. idk.

I guess I'll mess with it and see.

No, no! Never use dodge or burn -- it invariably messes up your colors and generally creates a plastic feel. If you don't feel comfortably freeballing your highlights or shadows (meaning painting them on your own), then use overlay layers to add them in. For highlights, pick a color lighter in value to what you're adding light to and then brush in the highlight. (Selecting a color that's similar to the hue of your intended light source is a good practice. Not only will it shift your values and give you your highlight, it will add color in a much more natural looking way to your piece. Dodge and burn may lighten and darken, but they usually shift the colors out of a piece in a very unnatural looking way. I used to do the same thing when I was starting out and I got slapped on the wrist by several professional artists for doing it -- It remains one of the most valuable lessons I've learned to date, honestly.. It makes a big difference in your work.) The reverse goes for shadows (picking a color a bit darker in value than the object you're lighting and appropriate in tone for the color of the shadow and then paint it in).



Quick thing to show what I'm talking about with dodge/burn vs. using an Overlay layer.

See how dodge sucks the life out of the color when used, compared to using an overlay layer with the same color? (It just drains it and makes it look dull/flat by comparison, which is what will kill any sense of realness and gives things that plastic feel.) Notice how the overlay layer shifts the colors, like it would in natural life when light is added? (Because all light has a color/hue to it, so it would add that tone to the existing local color of whatever you're lighting.)

Same goes for burn.. It just darkens in an unnatural way, but overlay adds back in that color shift that will make your colors feel more comfortable and help unify your lighting.
