    Mass Effect Retribution

    Background Story

It has been a hundred years since the invasion and resulting war of the mysterious Synthetic race which called themselves the Reapers had wreaked havoc and nearly wiped out all life in the galaxy. Hard choices have been made, all synthetic life destroyed along side the reapers, solving the Quarian and Geth wars. The mass effect relays were heavily damaged in result of the surge of energy emitted from the "Catalyst", but over time and with cooperation of all races, they were rebuilt.

The galaxy has started anew, all conflicts that once had the seat for hot debate, now rolling over to more peaceful times. The Krogan genophage was cured, and as they are rebuilding their destroyed population, others focus on rebuilding their destroyed worlds. Humans have showed themselves to be worthy of the galaxy and major players in the galaxy's elite, rising to the council and holding their place. Their Commander Shepard became the pinnacle of legend, revered as a hero, who although long past, still lives on the lips of every sentient being as the galaxy slowly recovers from the Reaper assault. With the ultimate annihilation of the reapers, the black operation group called Cerberus, a threat to every non-human and the overall peace of the galaxy, has also reluctantly crumbled with the death of their notorious leader the Illusive Man. The crumbling of their organization has further advanced the peace in he galaxy, promoting equality for all, but the threat of pro-human organizations are always not too far off.

With the ushering of a new, more peaceful era violence and chaos still exists. The pirate station of Omega still holds its position of a powerful and untouchable gem of the Traverse. And with the recent passing of their pirate queen Aria T'loak, the chaotic station has fallen into utter turmoil as gangs wage war to take over the throne. With the constant battle waging, the station threatens to implode on itself. The council watches, taking no action in hope that the problem will solve itself and the council can reclaim the station. With the war waging on Omega this leaves wanted criminals and insurgents no where to run to, causing more crime and mayhem on other worlds.

    Plot
Cleaning up the endless amounts of wreckage and debris that litter space is a slow and long process. Hulking bodies of the massive reapers that litter almost every world are scrapped for parts to repair the relays. An air of uncertainty surrounds their hulking corpses, rumors of their toxic mind control called, indoctrination, being still effective on their now inactive corpses has slowed progress. Workers have disappeared, pieces of Reaper tech has also been taken as well. Governments are worried, still jumpy after the horrible war that ravaged the galaxy only a few centuries prior they sent small clusters of operatives to investigate, and they too have reported missing. No one knows where they leave to, where hey are hiding it is the billion credit question everyone is looking to answer but almost every team that turns out to look suddenly disappears.
Reports of strange activity have been reported in the Artemis Tau cluster, which is also reportedly where most of the disappearances have been occurring. Other areas beyond the now accessible Geth veil have also been other areas of strange, phantom transmissions as well as more reports of disappearances have been received. Not only is this mystery gnawing at he back of the Council's mind but a mysterious nameless group has been assaulting and raiding Reaper disassembly lines as well as scientific centers holding classified and sensitive information pertaining to Reaper tech and synthetic knowledge on the Geth as well. Labs wiped clean of all traces of life and study had ever taken place. No scuffle shown, everything left in a peaceful manner although anything of importance has been taken.

With Cerberus disbanded, the Council and Alliance are worried that this threat is a Cerberus splinter group attempting to regain control by utilizing reaper technology and Geth data. Attempting bring chaos and in their eyes, ultimate power, to human hands once more. This theory is inconclusive with evidence provided, with the abduction of almost every species, showing no bias as whole research teams disappear in thin air. The council and Alliance have both sent their own teams to investigate, some of which have not returned, while others return empty handed. This has narrowed their influence down to three systems: Artemis Tau, Horse Head Nebula, and The Phoenix Massing. But which systems or planets their bases are located on are still a mystery.

Unfortunately a medium sized unit of 10 mercenaries and insurgents fleeing from Omega and the war and attempting to keep cover from Alliance and Council Spectres have come across a unmarked Drednought that appears to be Human Alliance design. With out any warning their craft is shot down, a few rounds of their Thanix cannons and the small team's ship is shredded into pieces. After successfully making it to the Escape pods, they land on the volcanic planet Therum. First on the teams list of priorities is to regroup, and although they have access to team wide comm. links their absolute ignorance to their surroundings makes this task much harder, not only that but they are now on the doorstep of an Haven base of operations.

    Haven

Haven is a group of mix raced operatives working to better technology. They seek out reaper tech as well as Geth data in order to recreate synthetic life. After witnessing and serving in the Reaper wars, the leader of Haven, an Asari Matriarch named Monolit Veshpaa, seeks to recreate synthetic life as she believes it is beneficial for the progression of their era into something more. This matter of thinking is in no doubt caused by the effects of Indoctrination which she was exposed to while working as a secret operative during the Reaper wars. Her prolific mind has held onto such tainted fruits for centuries since the fall of the Reapers, spending her hole life towards her goal of recreating the Geth and ultimately the Reapers as well.
Using altars crafted out of Reaper cores, she converts scientists, mercenaries, and all other matter of life into her obedient thrall. Some of the greatest scientists have fallen under her curse, their minds tainted and altered so that they only see her truth.

Monolit has gone as far as to attack Quarian colonies, collecting highly restricted information on the Geth an their construction. These blatant attacks on Quarian colonies and research facilities have ultimately pinned the Quarian's against her, and she is seen as one of their most volatile criminal. Although the council is peeved by her actions, they do nothing to stop her, knowing she is tucked way in the Traverse. The Council is also are ignorant of her involvement with the research facility abductions. But Monolit's days of actively attacking bases and assaulting research facilities are over, she now has a loyal army which do her dirty work. And as she orders teams of cohorts out into the inky blackness of space to retrieve parts of the greatest enemy of every race, she slowly inches towards completion.

Personally, I think 500 years in the future is a little too far - maybe 50 years? I'm just thinking about the whole 'Reaper tech' business - will Reaper tech even be a novelty in 500 years' time? 50 years in the future means that the scars of the Reaper War are still fresh on the galaxy, and would add a bit of extra importance to stopping the new organisation (Haven? Interesting choice).

Like I say, just my opinion.

    Name: Joe ‘Jump’ Bryant

    Age: 32

    Race: Human

Appearance: 5ft 11, Black Hair (Potentially), Brown Eyes, English

    Spoiler

Personality: Joe is fairly easy going. Life in the military and as a mercenary have put him in situations where acceptance of your squad mates means the difference between making it back or getting left behind. Although he may not like someone, if that person is a benefit to him, Joe will give them slack. As with most people who live with the prospect of death as a business hazard, Joe lives in the now, spending his money on cheap thrills and enjoyment. He has a quick wit and likes to laugh but for those who watch closely enough, behind his eyes he's always business. From the extensive training he's gone through there is always a calmness and understanding of the situation that very rarely lets him relax fully.

    Class: Vanguard

Abilities: Charge / Shock Wave / Nova / Pull

    Gear:
    Armor - Terminus Assault Armor
    Weapons - M-22 Eviscerator / M-5 Phalanx

Brief Bio: Joe's life was set out for him before he was born. His Father was a Marine in the Alliance, his mother an Engineer assigned to salvaging the Reaper's littered around the galaxy. One one trip out, his mother's ship was damaged, the Mass Drive leaking Element Zero into the life support system. Joe never knew his mother. She died when he was a baby through cancer brought on by the accident. If she'd have lived his life might have been different. Raised by his father, Joe was brought up to believe that the soldiers life was everything. There was no other calling and the best he could hope for was to be like Commander Shepard. As he grew, Joe learnt the normal things kids learn but everyday was basic training. He learnt drill, tactics and as he got older combat and weapons. When his Biotic's manifested, the Alliance came calling, fitting his L5n implant and signing him up to life in the service. His father, realising he was out of his depth, sent Joe to a Drell Master who taught him how to master his powers and use them to their fullest. He would have enjoyed it if they had wanted him to be the best he could be. Instead his father and his teacher just wanted him to be like Commander Shepard.

At eighteen, Joe was formally enrolled in the Alliance. The training quickly became the worst point in Joe's life. Already a couple of steps ahead of his squad mates he found the training slow and tedious. But worse were the constant reminders of Shepard. "This is how Shepard did it!" "Excel like Shepard!" "You to can be like Shepard!"

Joe often wondered just what Shepard was actually like? No-one in the this Alliance had met Shepard, the war being over before they were born. All that was left now were second hand stories and sycophants extolling and trying to emulate a dead hero. In their enthusiasm to be Shepard they couldn't even remember he Shepard was! Some said Shepard was a soldier, some an Engineer, a Biotic, an Infiltrator? Hell most people couldn't agree if Shepard was a man or a woman! Joe hid his thoughts and feelings from the rest of the Alliance. He got on with what he was good at and passed into active service. If he thought it would be different he was wrong.

The Alliance in general was no different from training. Everyone yearned after a dead hero, using a memory to numb whatever hardships they experienced. Joe slowly felt himself drifting away from his comrades. Whilst he had good friends and people he trusted with his life, he could never totally relax with them. More and more he wanted to be somewhere that judged him on his standards and abilities rather than those of a ghost.

Reaching ten years service, Joe withdrew his commission and left the Alliance. He needed to be somewhere a dead man wasn't watching over his shoulder. Taking his skills to the Terminus system he became a mercenary, earning his way through his own merits. His skills were sort after and soon Joe created a name for himself. Freelancing himself out to whoever who needed his skill set and had the credits to pay for it. As the money came in Joe set himself up in Omega. A relatively safe living space, better weapons and better armor. Joe kept himself just below the radar, people who's job it was to know, knew where to find him if they needed a job doing, most people didn't. He didn't have many friends, but he brought friendship were he needed it.

I thought about changing the time frame to something smaller, but it would take more than 50 years to rebuild the mass effect relays which were destroyed in the destruction of the Reapers as they were ultimately reaper tech. The reapers were an infinitely advanced race and built the relays themselves to lure sentient life outward to the stars. 500 years time would also give the galaxy adequate time to rebuild their cities and get a good feel what the new galaxy is like. 500 years would also mean that Reaper debris is also harder to find since a lot of it was used to rebuild the relays.

I think I might trim it down to maybe 2 or 3 hundred years because 500 does seem a little excessive.

    A 100 years could work. :P

Well if we go with the extended cut ending with only the rings of the Mass effect relay's being damaged. Then repairing them would be not very difficult at all, compare to completely rebuilding the darn things.

If Sovereign's attack on the Citadel was any indication. Rebuilding during this time period is quite fast and effective.

But now I have to rethink my PC idea. D=

It occurs to me if we chose the control ending rebuilding the Relay's could be done in a matter of a few years.

    Haha.

I think the destroy ending should remain as the ending we use, but sure, the Extended Cut edition does damage the relays less. Also, destroy gives a meaning to the Haven organisation.

One plus side to this for me is that I only have to modify Marianna a little bit! Hurray! And stuff.

It also occurs to me, we don't even need to use a canon ending, I mean. Why?

Most ppl hate the mass rely blowing up anyway. We can just say the Mass relays did not take any damage or minimum, aside from the Citadel mehaps.^^

Less ppl screwed up that way, in that time most of the fleet would have starved to death in a few years of rebuilding if they were destroyed.

    Just throwing out ideas.

Yeah good point. I will minimize it to 100 years, and just go with the relays being damaged.
