I used Paint.net ( not to be confused with the website, paint.net )

The world was me messing with the fractal cloud generator, posterizing it as needed before cropping and shifting and sorting the pieces I liked, and then detailing things with use of some of the tools, good old fashioned use of the 'paintbrush' and some fun with fonts and layers.
