Santa Claus, Mother Nature, Spring Heeled Jack. Legendary figures of the imagination, but where do they come from? From your mind? Or perhaps, from your parents, who told you stories as they were tucking you in when you were little? Well, both theories are wrong. We, humans, know about these characters because the Moon wants us to.
The Moon- or sometimes called The Man in the Moon- is earth's protector. For years, the Moon has fought a war with its enemy, Pitch Black, a creature made of pure shadow and hatred who means nothing but ill will for the people of earth. The war is never ending. Sometimes the Nightmare King gains a great deal of power, sometimes he goes into remission, but he never dies. He is always there, just waiting for his chance to strike.
Over the millennia, the moon has created its champions- beings with statures and abilities beyond the scope of regular mortals. They are known as Guardians. These champions can ride the wind, or create any object their mind conjures, or travel from one side of the globe to the other in seconds. Unaffected by age, they live as long as people believe in them. The one thing that Moon spirits can not do with ease is be seen. For their bodies are the same stuff as ideas are crafted from, and one must believe they exist before they can see them.
And so, the Guardians exist besides us, unknown and unthanked. We never see them, but evidence of their work is found every day; the elaborate frost designs on our windows, or the first flowers showing their delicate petals in spring. The moon crafted its Guardians from all types of earth matter. Some Guardians were once human beings who showed exceptional kindness or valor, but Guardians can be created from animals, stardust, or even toys.
Guardians derive their power from people who believe in their existence. Most specifically, children. But sometimes people forget, so the Moon sends it beams of moonlight down to earth to whisper about its Guardians and their deeds into the ears of poets, writers and artists. Thus, new stories, songs and images are made of the Guardians, and belief is renewed.
Pitch Black would not be such a fitting advisory to the Moon if he didn't know how to adapt. Over the years, Pitch has taken a few cues from his enemy and crafted an army of his own. You made have heard tales of Spring Heeled Jack, Slender Man, or Baba Yaga? These are the beings that fill the nightmares of children, and we call them Bogeymen.
Indeed, Bogeymen mirror the Guardians in many ways. They were made from fearful animals, cruel humans and even Guardians who grew to resent the Moon. Pitch found them, twisted their minds and hearts and forced under his employ. They are invisible to those who don't fear them, they're ageless and they have incredible powers.
The war between the Moon and the Nightmare King is still going on. At this time, Pitch collecting his chess pieces; getting ready for his next big move. Soon, the Guardians will have to fight the Bogeymen again. But not all Guardians are loyal to the moon, and not all Bogeymen are completely evil...
The most powerful of the Guardians, Nicolas St. North, otherwise known as Santa Claus, goes missing just before Christmas. The event threatens to destroy everything the Guardians know, for if North doesn't make his Christmas run, kids will likely stop believing in him. Belief in Santa leads into belief of other characters- not to mention he is an essential fighter on the team.
Pitch and his armies are now making their move. Soon Guardians and Bogeymen will be at war again. But not all Guardians are loyal to the moon, and not all Bogeymen are evil...
