What new ideas will you bring to AOTM:
I'm pleased to be able to include a new feature for the interviews this week, an intro by the player who suggested the GM to be interviewed. This will hopefully happen more often than not. Thanks 1DVSGuy for helping make this happen.
For this week of the Guild News, I would like to introduce to you all a very good friend of mine, Azseth.
A former Marine, and a very active member of the community, Azseth currently runs 3 roleplays all in the Advanced section. I, am personally in two of them and can say first hand that Azseth is totally loyal to the roleplays he is in, promising never to leave them as long as players are as committed as he is. He has made it a point that this is one of his most fundamental beliefs, and has even started a group full of players dedicated to keeping Roleplays going.
Admittedly, we don't always get along, in fact I can name at least once where we have butted heads... but in the end he has always been there for me and I will always be there for him. I can not think of some one else more deserving of an interview.
Lillian How long have you been GMing?
Azseth Ugh. Making an old person think back isn't that nice. I've been GMing for roughly...6 years. Maybe 7.
Lillian What made you decide to GM in the first place?
Azseth I think what made me want to GM was what makes many people hesitant to GM or even jump into RPs. Failed RPs. I had joined a handful of other RPs in one form or another, and they all folded and left me with thoughts and plots in my head, and characters hanging around like, "Az, what the hell just happened?"
I am not sure how most players are, but I know most GMs and all good players have this thing where they put thoughts and feelings and the most important thing, time, into things they create, be it a character, a world, whatever.
Sure, you can put those thoughts elsewhere and make new characters, but some people like me feel empty after that happens. And. You can't get time back. That's the real bitch of it. So when I started GMing, I figured I may not have ALL the power to keep an RP going and keep it from folding, but I have more power than being a player in someone else's RP.
Lillian How would you define a "Successful RP"
Azseth that's somewhat tricky, but in its more simple form, I say an SL (storyline, an old AOL term, sorry) that meets the GMs' and player's goals. Some RPs are made with a certain end in mind. Reaching it is "a success" in my eyes.
But deeper than that, it's when an RP captivates people, gets them really looking forward to more and challenging them. I know sometimes, I sit up at 3 in the morning and my mind is RACING with ideas and thoughts and all that. I think THAT is successful, in my eyes anyway. I HOPE my RP's do that to others. I hope it inspires them and excites them. So I guess to ME a successful RP is what has people feeling as excited to participate in an SL that I GM as I am to host it.
Lillian Do you have a RP that you feel is/was particularly successful?
Azseth Surviving: The End. I'm particularly proud of the name in and of itself, because I normally have big issues with coming up with something that isn't just cut and dry, or cliche in terms of a name for an RP. I know something small like that isn't probably a big deal but to me, it's huge. It was all good from then on. It's in its second season and it's a zombie survival RP.
Lillian Can you pinpoint what made it successful?
Azseth Me. Haha. Just joking. Then again, a lot of truth is said in jest, right? But, part of it is my drive. I say it pretty frequently that "this SL is more important than your character, or your feelings. Regardless of anything, this storyline will move." Because of that, it doesn't become stagnant, and thus, people don't lose focus or interest. Those that DO, well, to me it helps me weed people out. It's a damn zombie RP. Go inactive, your character gets eaten.
I think the other thing is that, this IS a zombie survival RP, but it's more than that. From day one, I wanted this SL to be something different from the dime-a-dozen zombie RPs out there.
Lillian So what makes it different?
Azseth This SL isn't about killing zombies, or zombies much at all. It's unique because it is about the characters. What they have been through. What they've seen. Then how it affected them, how they've changed. How different they are, or the things they've done to stay the same. I want to focus on that. The people the changes, and then the last part is, how all of the characters affect EACH OTHER. This is the key, this is what I want people to keep in the forefront of their minds.
Backtracking a bit, another thing that makes this SL what it is, obviously, is the players. The core group I have are great, some of the new guys are really good to have around. The others, well, they make great zombie chow when they bow out.
Another thing is that I try to shake things up. I'm prone to killing my own characters suddenly and with little thought, to the point that I almost regret it and other players are miffed at me. In fact, they made a term, they call it being "Azseth'd" and it's when a player kills his/her own character too soon and with little warning and possibly regret it moments after.
Lillian How clearly do you plot your RP, do you plan for an end or make things up as you go along?
Azseth Well, it all depends on the RP. I've had several smaller, close ended RPs that have had a clearly identified end. For S:TE though, I keep it more vague. For season 1 for example, I just said something akin to "I want season 1 to end when the survivors escape the building." What happened between point A and B, we made up as we go along. But then, some SLs require more direct movements, it just depends on the group and the SL and the end result that is desired.
Lillian How much control of the story do you allow your players?
Azseth Tricky again. It depends on the players, and it depends on the SL. One RP I am really, REALLY itching to try out is a survival horror where I myself have no character and just run everything else, while the players have little to no idea what is going on and have to investigate and make up conclusions for themselves. But in Surviving, they have what I'd consider a moderate amount of control and freedom. I LOVE a player that does not need to be led, or placed like a piece or food sped plot. It is very nice. So long as the players do not do anything that goes against the integrity of the story, or that completely derails the SL as a whole, I am ok with it. And to be honest, it's nice to be thrown a curve ball every once in a while and have to adapt my own thought process.
Lillian What was your biggest mistake as a GM and what did you learn from it?
Azseth I think my biggest mistake has been not scrutinizing people and challenging their long term interests. While I do not think this is fool-proof, I found that doing things to test people's resolve or willingness to work with players and the GM upfront work best. Also, intimidate people upfront vice once an RP is live. Maybe 'intimidate' doesn't sound like then nicest way to say it, but, it is what it is.
Lillian How would you implement that?
Azseth The main weapon in my arsenal is being upfront and clear with what I expect in players IC and OOC. I mean, painfully so. I state all my expectations bluntly, almost to the point where it may make people hesitate to join.
Good. I'd rather have people who are inconsistent or easily put off NOW as opposed to later, when the RP is going. This also makes it easier to remove those that are negatively affecting the SL. I think that is a crucial part of keeping an SL going.
My other weapon of choice is brutal honesty and not fearing hurting someone's feelings. If someone isn't active, I call them out on it. I generally do not just *BOOM* kick someone out, but I'll ask them point blank why they are not active and advise them that if they are not interested, leave. If a player isn't posting in a way that keeps the RP running smoothly, I'll tell them, offer them advice and ask them if something I did was not clear. Just as I am honest, I expect them to be so with me.
I try to go by the motto that 3 good, solid players who care about the story and each other is better than 10 players I have to babysit or lead or drag along. And I don't really care if I ruffle someone's feathers. I look at it like this. I PM JoePlayer and ask why he's not RPing in my SL, ask if he's lost interest. If he's upset at me for having the audacity to question him, then I am ok with it. Either change my impression, or accept WHY someone would get that impression and live with it. I'm not focused on players feelings, I'm focused on the SL. If I focus on my SL continuing, I'll have 2, 3 or 5 people who's feelings are NOT hurt, because the SL is running. Or I could focus on NOT hurting ONE players feelings and not worry about the other half a dozen waiting on JoePlayer to get with the program.
Still with me? One LAST thing I do specifically is make it mandatory to do certain things. I have dealt with plenty of people who, if you ask them for a sample post for example, they flake out. I say, good I'd rather have them NOT be able to work with me now and NOT be a part of the SL than to be brought on board and then leave because I turned the plot in a way that they did not want. Another thing I do is just make things mandatory, and yes, sometimes I do so just because I know some people will have a problem with it. I'd rather deal with NOT accepting people up front than the head aches of refilling rosters, adjusting plots and NPCing characters to keep things smooth.
Lillian Despite all these screens do you still encounter problem players and if so how do you deal with them?
Azseth Yes, it's something that I try to limit, but I know I will never remove it completely. Again, I always err on the side of being blunt and direct. Let me back track for a second also. Almost ever SL I start I make a pretty details list of my expectations. I make all players read it and PM me back acknowledging it. Now this again does not work absolutely, but what it DOES allow me to do is not feel that people don't understand my expectations, or leave me wondering if I was clear. So... If I have an issue, I address it with people. I make them aware of how I feel, why and then leave it open to them at that point. I have zero qualms with removing anyone from my SL, and I make that clear before and during this phrase of weeding people out.
Lillian What would be the best bit of advice you would give a new GM about how to run a successful RP?
Azseth A few things. Make sure players respect you. Period. I'm not saying make sure they worship you. But make them respect the time and effort you are essentially giving them, for free and with the sole hope that they'll not disappear on you or negatively affect an RP.
Next, you can never fail with being honest. Give expectations, concepts, anything a player can read and say "wow, yeah, I like that" or be like, "man, that guy wants a post a week, mandatory? F' that."
Put the effort to keep people who are not conductive or beneficial out BEFORE! Keep them out by any means necessary NOW.
I think the biggest thing is to put your RP or SL FIRST. It should go before your feelings on a players, before your character or how you want them to end up. If you do everything for the sake of keeping an RP alive, (even before your own feelings or wants) then you're doing right. Boot someone to keep it going? Yessir. Or. Occasionally GIVE IN to what the players may be wanting, even if it isn't what you wanted initially. Let them challenge YOU into thinking outside the box, do it to keep the SL going. Keep the players interested and knowing you're willing to listen. [/B]
Lillian Anything else you want to add?
Azseth Yeah. I think that being an assertive GM is the way to go. Players that haven't GMed do not realize all of the time, and effort that go into running an RP. Hold players accountable for their actions. Communicate with them. Demand that a player respect you and you time.
There is nothing wrong with being assertive and doing what you need to do to ensure that your RPs succeed. I started a group that focuses on this because I know firsthand what it takes to put yourself out there in form of starting RPs and how empty you can be left feeling after one dissolves because of the nature of players. The group is meant to be a positive environment for players and GMs alike to come in and get together with people who are not only put back by the lack of consistency, but are just looking to avoid focusing on that negative aspect of RP and instead find some like minded people. PM me if interested!
We really appreciate all the time that the interviewees put into these interviews, be sure to let them know if you enjoyed it. Want to re-read one of these great interviews again? They are all put into this thread for easy locating.
We are actively looking for GM's to interview (the list is getting rather small) so if you know of one you'd love to see interviewed please PM their name to Lillian Thorne.
Title: My Knights In Shining Armor
GMs: SasuNaruFlower and LockytheMaster
In the Highlands of Scotland where darkness seeps into the shadows and forests, there breaths the knights who protect the surrounding villages. Darkness flanks the Scott's and they all pay the Knights for their protection. But lately there is much more activity from the monsters that live off of human flesh and bathe in their fear. Will we be able to handle this? We must stick together to fight off this evil.. but one last thing.. no one must know the secret of the Guard.. They must never know that we sometimes use the Earth's magic to help us on our journey to destroy the darkness.. Can you handle the fate that may overcome us?
Title: The New Dawn of Kanorth!
GM: Roran Hawkins
Welcome to Kanoth. It has been almost sixty years since both the kingdoms of Asper and Vinngealos made it clear that sending criminals to the Northern Wastes wouldn't worked out like they hoped. After they realised that some might survived, they founded it easier to just execute criminals who went to far.
The current situation of the world isn't all that bright either. In the north, the heir of the Old Empire, Vinngealos is in great trouble. Five years back, there was this great revolt, caused by the reason that the Council were going to much the corrupt way of ruling. The situation went even dire, because the Council gave the order to use violence to put down the peasants. Some of the noble houses rejected, but were ignored by the Council. Now there is one house who is plotting in secret against the Council. The looming threat of another revolt is hanging over Vinngealos.
And how much Cavenin would want to take a profit out of that situation, they have their own dire problems! The hordes of Saeron tries to overrun the brave troops of Cavenin at the greatest island of the It'oru region. The battles at sea as land are fighten out by both sides and both sides don't surrender any ground to each other.
Arpes and Dunkura are also in trouble, cause the hordes of Saeron are now pounding hard on the defence in the Serli Mountians. Although it may seems that Saeron is now the leading major force in the world, they also have to deal with the upcoming revolts.
The only kingdom that is safe is the Republic of Lyrin, although, it may seem safer than the other nations. Well gues what, there isn't it really safe either!
Corruption has found it's way to the Merchant Circle and they have their own problems. With all the unrest and fighting/wars of the other nations, the trade has decreased over time and now even the always neutral Republic of Lyrin fears the chaos of the wars.
What will you do? How shall you act upon the looming threats of the world? Shall you be know for you're good or evil acts? Choose now and enter the world of Kanorth!
Title: The Prophecy
GM: Dark Jack
This is a roleplay quite beyond the regular standards when it comes to the incredible extent of details that are already determined about the world in which it takes place. But at the same time as the world is elaborately defined, the plot of the roleplay offers a great deal of freedom within the bounds of the world. The main plot of this roleplay is that of an epic medieval adventure fantasy tale, with major plot-points partially derived from the series novels called The Prophecy, with most details taken from the first book of the series The Prophecy of the Withering by L. K. Petersen… also known as me. Dark Jack. DJ. Seriously. I’m looking for a publisher, but it is written and eventually that book will be published.
The style of the roleplay will be that the storyline is extremely flexible, allowing the players to take their characters on detours and side-quests of their own design if they so chose, while only main plot-events are predetermined, although the outcome of these might not be. The roleplay will, aside from the main adventure-element, also have elements of war, and it has the freedom for the players to even make it a semi-social roleplay in which their characters may develop relationships, and even marry and have children, as long as it does not cripple the plot for the rest of the players.
Title: Payments Due
GMs: Taiylor Wallace and Rose Swan
Payments Due is the story of young Amelia, Princess of Hannibal and the daughter of the late King Griffinos and Queen Selene. Left under the care of a widely-hated Regent with only her personal guard Timur and her father's battledragon Hinden as her allies, Amelia must figure out how to heal her sickly, near-blind little brother Leonard. With advice from Hinden, she secretly seeks out a Northern Witch called Rogal Archer to request that he heal young Lenny. When Archer will not accept gold or favor as payment, Amelia is left in his debt until he decides that his payment will be to become her personal witch within her castle. But with his presence and that of his father, King Brammond of the Arctic, there also comes the Regent's own father, once an ally of Hannibal, now seeking to take over through blackmail and trickery or war.
Amelia comes face-to-face with the possible annihilation of her home, family, and allies, and is forced into many harsh decisions. Along her way, many secrets she never expected are revealed by a journal left by her late father, including the knowledge of many magicks, people, and creatures that could either help or destroy her.

Title: The Island
It's world war three and parents around the world are worrying about their kids. They want them to be safe from all of the terror. Someone is offering help. They set up the place, building cabins and washrooms, a cafeteria and play areas on an island in the middle of the atlantic ocean. They made it a fabulous place to camp. A place to be away from the war and from all the violence. People from the Americas, Asia, Europe, or even Antarctica.. are being sent to this sanctuary. Since there are kids from all over the world, no one wants to attack it. A child of their own, perhaps, is there. Safe. No more invasion's. No more bombing. Not for these kids.
Title: Dog Pack
As all stories begin, there are always the goods and evils of the world. In this world, it is split among all Sions.
So, here we are.
I've noticed the lack of original thought up universes in the "Casual" threads. It peeved me a little bit that so many fandoms were popular. Not saying that I don't participate in them myself, but.. I mean, really. Anyway, this is meant to be a long term RP. It's crafted in a way that it can die and be resurrected with ease/more people can add on at anytime. I understand that things will happen in RL as I am a college student myself... but please. Hang with me. Don't drop it just because you can. If you have grammar beyond saving please do not join. Any and all ideas are welcome to be tossed around with mine.
The concept is that there are two packs of Sions, The Faro and The Neala, that are mortal enemies. They are an advanced race of canines and they live in a realm where there are no humans to be told of. In plain terms the Faro is the darker, deadlier pack and the Neala is the strong, honorable pack. The main plot is basically the struggle that the packs have with each other. They can have a common enemy at one point and then further down the road in the RP it can be referred to as a story of legend. Many different events can happen with expected waves of players. For those of you that are sentimental of your work, each member will have a place in the Scion history. I know, it makes me tear up too.
Each pack will essentially need:
- An Alpha
- 2 females
- 1 male
(First come, first serve)
Note that this is just a skeleton for each pack. In seeing this, we can add on players and take away if need be at any time. There can always be a puppet post getting rid of one Alpha in order to gain a new one and new Sions can join the pack at any time. Any breed of dog is welcome to join. Do not be intimidated! This can always be fleshed out in more dynamic ways. Get to it! :P
Title: Post Apocalyptic Party Based Story
GM: Serge Drevlan
The world ended long ago. Roughly a century, I've heard from people. Humanity has not been able to climb itself from the depths as was predicted. Killed we were, and dead we stayed.
"But wait, how are you speaking to me now?" You must be asking yourself. Well, I guess you'd be right. We weren't entirely killed off. We've been hanging on the brim. We've used our superior intellect to supersede the torments of nature. We have been pushed into absolute tribal nature. The most base level of human civilization. This isn't for lack of trying, oh no. Everytime humans begin building the technology we had so long ago, we get smacked back down. People used to say it would take us less than a half century to get back on our feet if an apocalypse ever occurred. They never predicted what we have been going through. An electron pulse bomb is set on a fifteen year alarm which releases a global pulse, rendering whatever we have done up to that point, electrical wise, useless. The latest pulse was two years ago, so much progress lost. I was the personal bodyguard for a scientist who was a leader in the field and had come up with a way of fixing the problem. Before the pulse went off he, his name was Jefferson Philips, got a satalite up and running, found an uplink to a military GPS. He found the location of the bomb and wrote it on a map and specific directions to get there. All his life's work ended up on some loose leaf and a cowhide map. Then he died, because I failed. Before he did, he gave me all this information and taught me all I had to know to get the bomb offline.
And now you all, my staff provided by the good scientist, must help me get there. It won't be easy, and I have reason to believe we will receive military resistance, but it must be done. You need to be ready to die to send that information to our destination. Now, grab your weapons, we have a mission.
The apocalypse occurred in the year 2183. The world was flourishing, a total technical marvel. Beam weapons were existent and the driving force of firepower, androids were a common thing and intersystem travel was becoming a possibility. Then the electron pulse bomb went off and everything collapsed, we depended on electrical equipment far too much. Without beam weapons there were only less than a hundred-thousand gunpowder based weapons in the world. Now people fight with their fists mostly or martial arts weapons. There has been a significant increase in the education of martial arts like Kung fu, Krav Maga, Judo, and the like. If a firearm is ever used there is likely to be a death, and no one is immune to a bullet to the head. So a small group of mercenaries and scientists and doctors and whatever else could be scrounge up head through the former united states through to south america. Their journey is long, and people are likely to die, but as long as the group keeps the information flowing in the right direction, it should finds its way into the annals of history, marking the resurgence of old world society.
Tell me if you're interested please! I'm looking for interesting characters and good, dedicated storytellers. Let's make this happen people

RolePlay MilestonesEvery now and then, a roleplay hits an achievement that roleplayers are proud of. Whether it is an anniversary, completion, or even something has simple as post count, they need to be celebrated. This week, we have two roleplays: Glomp!, a Casual roleplay by Kagamine, which has just celebrated its two-year anniversary on Dec. 26th and Naruto Generations, another Casual roleplay by Gerontis and Vuurvos, which has achieved 1,000th posts just a few short days ago. If your roleplay has reached an important landmark that you are proud of, please PM the link and description of the achievement to Squee.
It was on an average summer day when characters from a variety of animes began appearing in our world, only to be found by a small group of fan-girls. For Taylor, Alyssa and Grace, it seemed like their wildest dreams had come true, and they eagerly took in the lost and confused characters. But the dream soon became a nightmare when agents from the sinister organization, Operation Anime, began to pursue the characters that the girls were housing. It wasn't long before they made their motives known; the OA had been created to capture and exterminate all characters. With more and more characters suddenly appearing in the real world, the girls set out on a mission to get to the characters before the OA can. After only a few days the group has gotten much larger as the girls have discovered characters from more and more animes, mangas, webcomics and videogames that have unexpectedly been dragged into our world by a flash of purple light. Along the way, they are joined by Kendra, a fellow otaku, Miku, the mysterious flying cat behind the characters' sudden appearance and Tim, son of the OA's maniacal Boss. With the otakus' forces only increasing by the day and the OA's tactics getting more violent and merciless, the girls find themselves engaged in an all-out war.
Glomp! has been in progress for two years as of December 26th, thanks to it's four faithful members, Kagamine, Cheetay, Animegal1251, and OverlordRoo. The roleplay and story greatly developed since its creation in 2010, starting with the simple casual idea of anime characters being brought into reality to the advanced plot that has unfolded now. Even when posting is slow to the point of being inactive for weeks, Glomp!'s members are dedicated and stick with it. Over the years Glomp! has even gotten its own fanfiction by Kagamine, as well as a comic by OverlordRoo. Glomp! has been a private roleplay for sometime, but there are plans in the making for a sequel, which will be bringing in new members.
Rise of the New Generation is a RP that has a funny story of how it started. A very good friend and I were members of an Naruto RP that slowly died. I went out one day and when I came back, a bit tipsy I have to admit, my buddy told me he was going to leave and wanted to set our own Naruto RP up, right away. I was a bit confused, but I made a promise to him. Knowing that the old Naruto RP was going to die, we talked and then made a deal that if it would crash, we would start a new one which would have a better system and such. So, the next day we had set up RP. Many of the old roleplayers flocked to join us as did several new ones. The start was very good and I was very happy, am still happy, that Vuurvos convinced me that we could make it into a success.
As for the story, the RP is just amazing. Can't describe it differently, because while there is a main plot, there are many side-plots and character development moments. I have two very good examples to show this:
The first example is of my rookie character, a very poor orphan who has a feisty, cheerful attitude and the desire to be accepted. Cliché, old, boring same story? Well, his is different, that I can assure you. While he manages to become good friends with his teammates and gets accepted and loved as a little brother by his Sensei, it looks like his life can't go wrong. At least it had looked like that until a close friend disappears, the one he saw as a brother die in front of his own eyes, and almost never sees his Sensei and guardian again. While a bit bitter about it, he is still the same old punk, maybe a bit matured by his experiences, but it is one of the many nice character development stories that is happening in Generations.
The second example is of another character of mine, the leader of a village. It is of a man who has lost many dear friends and family and is troubled by his past. He meets one day a little orphan girl who like him lost her family. Seeing a connection, he adopts her and the two come to love each other as father and daughter. However, he knows a terrible secret: What happened to her parents and who killed him. Afraid of the truth and that she will come to blame him, he can't tell it her. After some time, his adoptive daughter is going on her first mission with him and a team, a mission that doesn't seems like a real challenge, but they were very wrong. The murderer appears with two strong enemies and two battles take place. The first battle was a introduction and during the second and final battle, it was revealed the leader of the three was the murderer of the daughter's parents. Then in battle, the father is caught and held in place by the adoptive daughter as she is forced to make a choice: kill him or forgive him. Ultimately, she decides to forgive him and together they manage to defeat the enemy and complete the mission.
The RP has all kind of these stories, apart from the main plot story and it just great to see all the characters developing throughout the story as they struggle to obtain their goals and dreams. Mainly the rookies, who are center of the main story (most of the time).
I think that is why Generations is still a great success, while most Naruto RPs ( so far I have seen) died a silent death after around 4 weeks. The interaction is great, people are willing to lend each other a helping hand and the GM's are always ready to help somebody with a question or whatever is needed to be done. Of course, there were a few times where I have wanted to scream, curse, and drop the RP, but because of the amazing players, I have stayed and am glad that I made that decision. After all, I think it's safe to say that Generations is my favorite RP so far and it has become a great and fun place to join a large group of players and make new friends.
As for now, we are making edits and reforming the RP. I guess you could say that we are updating it and it's attracting more and more members. Even now, while we have passed the 1000 posts, everyday collabs and posts appear. If it continues like this, I bet we can become truly one big and great RP, the RP which I and Vuurvos wanted to create in the beginning.
