Gun Control: A Story You Haven't Heard

With one shot, an off-duty sergeant took down a gunman who attempted to opened fire at a crowded movie theater lobby during a late night showing of “The Hobbit” in San Antonio, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Police say a gunman, identified as Jesus Manuel Garcia, chased patrons from the nearby China Garden Restaurant into the lobby of the Santikos Mayan 14 movie theater at around 9 p.m. on Sunday. Garcia, an employee of the restaurant, reportedly walked in the establishment looking for a woman.

When the woman, also reportedly a restaurant employee, wasn’t there, Garcia pulled out a gun and attempted to open fire in the restaurant but his weapon jammed.

“It started at the restaurant and then went into the parking lot and then into the movie theater,” Deputy Lou Antu told 1200 WOAI news.

The commotion sent horrified restaurant patrons into the movie theater lobby, but the gunman followed. He again attempted to open fire, and this time his gun didn’t jam. Garcia reportedly shot one man in the chest before Antu says an off-duty sheriff’s sergeant working security the theater shot him once, dropping him to the floor.

Bexar County sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Castellano reportedly chased the gunman toward the back of the theater. The 13-year department veteran cornered him after he ran into a men’s restroom and shot him before taking his gun.

“The officer involved, she took the appropriate action to try to keep everyone safe in the movie theater,” Antu added.

Due to the off-duty sergeant’s bravery, the gunman was not able to make it into the theater where he could have potentially taken many lives.

Thankfully, it's not every day you read about something like this; but every once in a while, it's comforting to know that bad guys aren't the only guys out there with guns. Hats off to Sgt. Lisa Castellano -- I hear she's getting a well-deserved medal this week. Hopefully someone notices.s

It is nice to hear that some people do use there guns for good.

But I'm getting the sense this story is being used as a defense for gun legalizing simply from the title starting with 'gun control'

In which case I would reply

1) If guns were illegal there would be less of these incidents being started in the first place
2) She was a Sheriff, unless if you went to England's extreme, people like the Sheriff would still have their guns anyways.

This wasn't a service firearm, this was her personal-carry weapon, legally owned and operated by an educated citizen to stop crime. I won't go into derpbate mode on you -- I guess my point here, if I even have one, is that I'd rather watch a movie in Texas, where the good guys have handguns, than in Colorado, where only the bad guys have them.

Let's just ignore the extremely obvious debate here and leave the topic for what it is. Given the situation this is the near best conclusion you can hope for in a situation like that, therefore Sgt. Lisa Castellano is for all intents and purposes a hero and saviour, regardless of what she has been trained for.

Our police do have guns. They only bring them out when the criminal in question also has a gun, which is perfectly sensible in my opinion.

But yeah, the sheriff did good. One of the few times I would condone the use of a gun is when, as mentioned above, the criminal is also armed. It's also good to hear that the man who was shot in the chest is likely to recover.

So, how do you propose to keep the bad guys from getting guns? Dollars to donuts, the gun this guy had was illegally obtained.

This is a highly pointless comment, but there's actually a town south (I think) of San Antonio (I've been to both San Antonio and this other town) which actually forces you to have a firearm on you at all times. The crime rate there is almost 0%.
