Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

You see, I'm a Cassowary. They're ninja turkey ostriches of justice. They can flex their leg like a Flamingo, leap and ninja kick people as they please. I haven't ever done Romance before, so it'll be a new experience. If it ever happens. (Nothing much has happened in my lifetime anyway )
