So we have to watch someone continue to be a dick and annoy the hell out of everyone until he runs out of money? Sounds fun!
Does that site make people pay for something as simple as an avatar or signature change? You ignored my example the site that pulls in a six figure income for one man every year.
Do the members there update avatars and signatures as often as the people here?
If he didn't think people would honestly donate, then why would he think people would enjoy paying money with the method you've devised?Because he likes money, and has turned down donations because he doesn't think people are serious?
I read the OP and thought it was stupid, as I've clearly been outlining here. Also, people have a reason to react harshly to money-related matters. Because A) some people can't afford to spend tons of money on a roleplaying forum of all things and B) this is a free site. That's something it's proudly been proclaiming ever since it's foundation and I don't see that going away any time soon.Hey, it's not my fault if you refuse to read the OP and all my posts because you're poor and have a knee-jerk reaction when money becomes involved.
I also don't see how being poor gives me any less credibility. Because sure, I'm poor; I'm an unemployed sixteen-year-old from a lower middle class family, and so what? If anything that makes be better to represent the large mass of members who can't even spend money on avatar changes, as opposed to the members with cash flowing out of their pockets who can keep coming back to annoy the forum even after they've been banned until they think they've had their money's worth.
The poor can't even change their avatars and the rich get a get-out-of-ban free card? Now that is just unfair, and I guarantee it will drive people away.

For the first time in a long time I agree with this guy.

Not saying I agree or disagree with the OP, however, there are actually a number of communities that do exactly what Turt is suggesting. My experiences with them are generally in GMOD or TSRP, but you pay for pay small sums to get extra benefits. People will, and do, drop as little as $5 and as much as $150 to get access to special abilities and areas. Often times the benefits translated into their forums as well, since Text RP was as much active as more visually interactive incarnations. Hellzone PERP, a GMOD community is one example. This community and numerous others I've been involved in gave incentives to those who donates, some of which including that those people who were banned may be given leniency for their contribution.
So, to those who are saying these ideas do not work and are inherently bad -- take a minute. Other communities do use these methods to varying degrees of success. Some definitely were full of pricks with deep pockets (Havoc9), others actually lived on pretty well and had a great team who used the money to expand their community (M7x). While I understand that some of these ideas may not work for RPG, I do not approve of how quickly responses turned harsh against the OP. Whether or not the person might frequent the spam area, suggestions are still suggestions. Even if this were a joke it gives us insight into what the community thinks.
That being said, here's my opinion: I do not want to see a charge for avatar/signature modifications or custom titles. Frankly, as is, I found the flashy titles reserved for OTM winners annoying enough (no offense y'all). Putting a barrier between those who pay and those who don't in that way would be annoying for us who wouldn't pay. Though, I totally guarantee people would pay for that in the same way they pay for bumper-stickers, buttons, and other novelty decorations. I also do not agree with paying to be unbanned. I did not approve of this feature when I experienced it. I do approve of the idea of paying for a Mature area. Smut and extremely horrific RP are not my interest, but I believe it is to some, and that this could provide a place for that sort of expression while possibly bringing in a bit of revenue. There should be rules for this place to keep RPG on track as well as a signature or age acknowledgment that comes along with the payment that the customer is of age or otherwise permitted access.
I disagree with the signature/avatar charges because this would restrict advertisement. Many RPs rouse attention through flashy, creative banners made by our community. I wish our community charged for these banners, as an artist who understands they're devaluing their trade by not, but charging people to show the RPs that our community requires to survive sounds like an unhealthy move.
