A Tony Stark and Pepper Potts Roleplay for myself and LimeyPanda
Some people probably though Pepper Potts had the patience of a dozen saints put together. Some people probably thought Pepper Potts was just an android built by Stark himself. And some people probably thought Pepper Potts' medical insurance was vast and ever expanding due to the numerous heart attacks and panic attacks he surely gave her on a regular basis. These people weren't off the mark completely. The woman did have an above average level of tolerance, patience, and negotiation skills. Though she was not a robot built by Tony, the two sometimes wished they could change the software on one another. She wished he'd be more attentive and responsible and he'd want to permanently disable her nagging software. And her medical insurance was pretty important in her line of work, not to mention that she almost died a few times while on the job, which she also said was his fault. And because of the constant burden of stress, she did try to visit the doctor more often than most because the woman was always on her feet dealing with something, that the doctor's office almost seemed like a vacation from the work suffocating her.
But Pepper loved her job.
She did it well.
And she knew no one else would be able to fill her high heels.
That wasn't why she didn't just quit after so long though. Pepper enjoyed her job and even the man she worked for. Over the years they had become close, while Pepper still kept her own personal life away from him. Still, she could consider her and Tony friends. He only had two. Her and Rhodey. And Tony was lucky because despite the general population swooning over Iron Man, there were many who were still reluctant about opening up for Tony Stark who's playboy reputation would never die. And maybe that's why Pepper insisted on keeping a personal distance from the billionaire. She knew everything about Tony and she had seen things that no one else ever would. Maybe she knew too much. Or maybe she just knew that he wasn't right for her, despite the progress he had recently been making. He could forget the many nameless one night stands but she couldn't.
And she didn't want to be that either.
His aversion toward a committed relationship was something she could understand so she didn't care if he never settled down and made her shoo away past lovers even when he was eighty, but it got to her sometimes. Making the comparisons was something a woman couldn't help but do sometimes. And whenever she found herself a little jealous, she just reminded herself that Tony needed her most and she knew it was true. All other women weren't important enough to see twice or think about so Pepper went through her day focused on work and Tony. And thus it was only a matter of time before feeling surfaced. Like when he was lost in Afghanistan and she couldn't sleep without medication and when she did sleep, it was nightmarish. Or like when he was attacked on the race track by Vanko and Natalie (now known as Natasha) was lingering around. It was those times in which Pepper couldn't help but feel her heart tugging harder, beating faster, almost to the point of actual pain.
Of course being a beautiful woman, she had many boyfriends in the past. From high school up through before she started working for Stark Industries and her social life evaporated. Even so, the prospect of her and Tony Stark was a laughable one for a multitude of reasons. Most of which were her warning herself of who Tony was and who he would never be. Some women dated men in order to fix them but Pepper didn't want to be that girl or take on such a project. Tony had his imperfections but she didn't see them changing, nor should they need to if he was happy. But now as the CEO, she was sure that any kind of personal relationship with Tony would never explored, nor should be. Though it wasn't until the events at Stark Expo that Pepper was sure they would just be close friends because that was when they kissed.
Sure, there was that almost sort of kiss a while ago at the black and white event.
Did that really count? They both remembered that night differently...
But that kiss on the roof, after Tony had swooped in and saved her from some bomb, it was very different. Sure, she could brush it off and say that it was just the bottled up emotions of almost dying, him almost dying and other complicated things but there was more to it. Pepper was smart enough to admit that much to herself. And so after a series of conversations, the two decided that they should try and have a relationship though Pepper was very uneasy about it because the potential falling out could ruin her career and their friendship. Their relationship would forever be complicated it seemed. There were some demands of hers that had to be met in order for her to trust him on a personal level. She limited his alcohol consumption to two drinks a day. She also limited his spending because he didn't need another car or project to work on.
She was busy with being a CEO and she wanted Tony to pull more of his weight. Even though they had been going out for about a month or so, Pepper was still having trouble to find the time to get together without work getting in the way. It was becoming so burdensome that she was mulling over the idea of dropping back to a less taxing position in the company. Pepper was great at organization and communication and marketing but she wasn't a super hero like Iron Man, as much as some thought of her. After having so many run ins with death and dealing with an immature genius, she wanted to start thinking about settling down. Did she want to keep working until she finally did die of a heart attack at her desk or in the car on her morning run to fetch her and her boyfriend/sort of boss coffee? The stress rarely ate at her but it really was starting to.
Was it asking too much of Tony to try and help his friend out?
Pepper pulled up to Tony's Malibu mansion and got out. It was a windy Friday morning. Pepper had some papers in her bag and a small to go tray of coffee and scones in her hand and used her free one to open the front door. "Morning JARVIS, where's Tony?" She greeted and headed right for the kitchen to put down their makeshift breakfast. Then she set her bag down and straightened herself out. Pepper had on a simple black blazer, pants and a light pink blouse which blended in with her light skin tone. Then she had on deep red heels which matched the color of the Iron Man armor. As Tony called it, hot rod red. Taking a sip of her coffee, she brushed some of her hair back. Today it was down, sleek and straight which was a change from her usual hairdo. "I hardly got any sleep last night." She muttered and rubbed her face, hoping the caffeine would kick in soon. Part of her was tempted to just take a nap while Tony worked.
That didn't sound like a bad idea. She would just rest her eyes, for a few minutes! Setting her cup down, she walked over to the black leather couch by the fireplace and repaired piano and promptly laid down. On average, she usually got about three to four hours of sleep a night which for some college students was fine, but for a hardworking CEO, it was not fine. Pepper sighed and closed her eyes. "JARVIS, wake me up when Tony resurfaces." She assumed he was down in his lab, tinkering or something. Usually she would go find him, get his signature, catch up on his night went, ask about a weekend date but at the moment she was too tired and assumed he could find his own breakfast like a big boy. And with not bothering to get too comfortable, Pepper shifted and laid on her side, curled up slightly and found herself dozing off rather quickly.
