It's a real thing, but most guys use it incorrectly. Being simply rejected doesn't equal friendzoned. Being too much of a pussy to make an advance while the other person also makes no romantic overtures doesn't equal friendzone. Guys overuse it to alternately make their rejection seem softer or to put the supposed fault on someone other than themselves, not to actually describe real instances of being freindzoned.

Friendzone, as far as I'm concerned, refers to the place you land in after you make advances on a girl and she rejects you specifically because she doesn't want to ruin the friendship. By that definition, pussies who do nothing are not in the friendzone. Which is also I think what Jorick meant.
