Mark walked down the hall of the St. Vincent's hospital, lilies in his right hand and chocolates in his left. Valentine's Day was a month ago, but this was better. His girlfriend of two years, the young woman he intended to marry once they both were finished with college, had just awoken from a nine month long coma. For so many nights, he had sat by her bedside, pleading and hoping to whatever governed the universe, be it a God, or fate, or just a series of statistical probabilities. Wiping a tear of happiness from his hazel eyes behind silver eyeglasses, he cracked open the door to room 214.
“Hello?” he murmured. His old girlfriend's parents set by her bedside. “Come in, but --” her mother started to reply. The young man couldn't help himself. He sprinted in, threw the lilies on the bed, and wrapped his arms around his beloved friend.
Nebraska started to freak out. "Get off me!" she screamed, unable to push for she was much too weak. "Stop it stop it!" she screamed, and the doctor came rushing in. He softly pulled Mark away from her, and turned him around. "Sir. Calm down. She has amnesia. She is scared and jumpy. Be calm and keep quiet."
The doctor made his way over to the young girl. "Shhh...shh...You'll be alright." he whispered. He looked at her parents. "Introduce him to her..."

Mark was in shock. Amnesia? I.. after all this time, I knew this could happen but.. He felt angry, hurt, upset, but there was nothing to direct it at. It was no one's fault. He wanted to cry, but everyone in the room had enough to deal with without his own emotions turning into a problem. Taking a deep breath, he said, “I apologize for my rudeness. I was a good friend of yours before your accident, and I lost control of myself. I meant no harm.”
Nebraska's mother, Sarah, nodded and patted him on the back. “It's ok, sweetie. We understand.”
He stepped back and took the lilies and box of chocolates from the bed, carefully setting them on the bedside. He was unable to look at her right now, afraid he would burst into tears. Still looking at the flowers, he did not know what to say, so he babbled a little. “I'm sorry for frightening you. My name is Mark Sanchez. Would you please accept these as get well presents? You used to really like them. I can leave if you like.”

The shaken girl looked up at them, and she began getting flashes of memories. Mark giving her lillies for their anniversary...She bit her lip. "I-I love lillies..." she whispered, stroking the beautiful flowers. She closed her eyes, pulling the chocolate box towards her. "A-and chocolates..." she whispered, taking a bite out of one. She swallowed. "D-don't leave...I need to get to know everybody.." The sentence made the doctor smile.

The young man sat down. "I'm glad you like them," he replied softly. He was quite afraid to say anything else. There was not exactly an easy social solution for "my girlfriend of two years just woke up from a 9-month long coma and has amnesia." He doubted he would find help for that in any self-help books.
Fortunately, Mrs. Sarah broke the silence. "Doctor, when will she be able to come home?"
"Well, we want to run a few more tests, and monitor her condition to ensure that she does not relapse. So, if everything goes well, about a week."
"Thank you," Mrs. Sarah replied. Hugging the doctor. "You brought my girl back."
"I didn't do it, ma'am. I don't know what did. Sometimes even the least religious of us have to call this a miracle."

Nebraska leaned back, rubbing her temples. She started coughing, a result of delayed asthma attacks. "D..o..c...t...o...r..." she managed to say through coughs. This type of stuff had been happening alot the past few hours. "H...e..l..p....." Then she was gone, unconscious once more.

“It's alright. She just fainted due to an asthma attack. It shouldn't be a relapse,” the doctor stated, calmly putting an oxygen mask on the girl.
Mark looked down at his old friend. He knew zero medicine; he had always been more of a machines person, and he had never found the subject terribly interesting. Sure, after Nebraska's accident, he had read every journal article, book, and website he could find on the subject of comas and brain damage, but there was no answer to what to make of it if the patient fainted after just coming out of a coma. He had no choice but to trust the doctor, and that made him feel utterly helpless.
[OOC: Please don't make me have to know medicine beyond a quick wikipedia search again? I'm clueless on that stuff and I'm afraid to write something wrong.]

The young girl woke again only a few minutes later. She blinked groggily and slowly sat up in her white hospital bed. With a soft sigh, she took one of the flowers from the boquet of flowers and took a whiff of it, before setting it down and glancing at her supposedly parents and boyfriend, fear playing in her bright, green eyes.

Mark breathed a sigh of relief. Seeing the fear in the girl's eyes, he looked into them.
"There's no reason to be afraid. None of us are going to hurt you," he murmured kindly. Memories played in his head, he wanted to relive some of them with her, to somehow help her remember, but it was too soon.
He felt uncomfortable and needed some time to think. “I'm really sorry, but I have to go. I have a big Circuits test I need to study for,” he said apologetically. “I'll be back tomorrow, old friend.”
And with that he walked out of the hospital room and to his 2005 sedan. Only when he closed the car door did he allow himself to cry out of fear and frustration. Would his old friend, the girl he fell in love with, ever return?

Nebraska was allowed to leave the hospital that morning. She had trouble walking, and stumble a bit, but made it to the car with a sigh of relief. She climbed in, and they began drivimg, her mother talking of old memories, trying to jog her memory.
