“No one hates you, Nebraska,” Sarah replied quietly. Normally she would have been quite annoyed to see her daughter throwing a tantrum like this, but she wanted to be understanding when the girl had been through so much. “You may not remember, and you may not believe us, but your father and I love you. Your friends have been calling left and right to see you, and your old boyfriend still loves you and never saw anyone else while you were in a coma. Sarah ignored the laptop on the floor. Destroying her own property was her daughter's problem.

Nebraska pushed away from her mother's arms. "You don't understand Mom. I can barely remember anything, and I already have my boyfriend giving up on me. You just don't understand. All you care about is being the greatest mom in the world, so you have to act like you understand. But really, you're annoyed with me! Don't try to lie and say you don't because that's how you usually are. Always wanting to be perfect." She knew her words were harsh, but true. It hurt Nebraska for her to know her mom might not even really care. And then it clicked. She had been remembering what her mom acted like before the accident.

Sarah sighed. "You're right, I don't understand. True empathy is completely impossible because I've never been in your situation, anymore than you could sympathize with someone who had suffered a great tragedy that you had not. But I'm doing the best I can. And you're right. I am annoyed with you. I'm annoyed with my eighteen year-old daughter acting like a spoiled child and throwing a temper tantrum at the people trying to help her. But I know that you are ill, and that you are in an unimaginable situation that neither you, nor anyone else, would ever know how to deal with," the young woman's mother replied calmly. "And even if that weren't the case, it would be counter-productive to become angry at you over the incident. I don't think you're acting rationally, and I can only hope that you will come to see how fortunate you are."

"Oh thanks mom. Now I'm the spoiled brat. Maybe you should put yourself in my shoes." She got off the bed, crying once more for the hundreth time that day. She pushed her shoes on to her feet and grabbed her keys. "I hope I die this time." she growled and was gone. She got into her already restored car, and started it up. Death seemed like the best answer. No more breaking Mark's heart. No more having her mom hate her. No more disappointment.

"Uh, I was trying to," Sarah muttered. Nebraska had left so quickly that her mother was flustered. By the time she reached the driveway, her daughter had already started the car. She stood there, shocked, confused, and worried for her disturbed child. She felt helpless as she watched the car, wondering what her daughter would do.

"Bye Mom..." she whispered sadly, pulling out of the driveway. She drove off, and found herself arriving at the beach, where Mark and her hand their first kiss. She climbed up to the cliff where they want cliff diving, and everything poured out. All her tears, and even a few memories....
