Thread: Thinking of making a fantasy RP anyone in?

  1. #11
I need to set up the basics of the magic system now.

Magic is the trained art that allows creatures to tap into either the residual enegies left over form the birth of the universe or a God. This can theoretically be taught to almost anyone but doing so is difficult in practice. The broad principles of how magic works can be understood academically but the way each individual taps into magic is just different enough to prevent it from being an absolute science. The personality built into the power tapping means that each magic teacher can generally only have about 1-3 students due to the personalised teaching methods. Depending on the speed of the students and the skill of the teacher making a competent mage takes between 2-8 years.

Just for clarification a Mage taps into residual power while a Cosmurgist/Cleric taps into the power of the Gods. Cosmurgist is the academic name but those who tap into the power of Gods are almost always followers of the deity they tap into for reasons that will be explained hence "Cleric". Becoming a Cosmurgist requires a highly complicated magical ritual known as Divine Union. If it works then the Cosmurgist "Syncs up" with the God, once connected their minds connect on a relatively simple level. The Cosmurgist can request magical effects and can get a general feeling for how much the God likes him/her. The God can send magical effects linked to its aspects through the Cosmurgist, it also gets a general understanding of how much the Cosmurgist likes him/her and his/her current status.

Note that nothing stops someone from being both a Cosmurgist and a Mage, however Divine Union only works with one God at a time.

    Magic Items

Inanimate objects can be permanently given a magical power of some kind. This involves bending its magical properties in order to change its magical status, making enchanting items an act of limited reality-warping. This is far more energy-intesive then coaxing out the effect normally but it is permanent and it sticks to the item until it's inscription is wrecked.

Inscriptions are a set of symbols carved into the item which basically hold the altered magical data. Anyone sufficiently can create an Inscription but only a mage can empower it in order for it to take effect.

This should be the third to last worldbuilding post, I have an idea for an adventure aswell! What about rescuing kidnapped royal heirs from a cult?

Heh well I have written 2 short stories and played 4 tabletop campaigns in it so the buildup was gradual, the first time I used the setting had a couple of wierd things in it that were retconned.

Now then on to spells and Limitations on magic

    Spells

A "Spell" is a consistent magical effect that a Mage has practiced invoking repeatedly. Spells are the most reliable magical effects because of the repeated practice put into invoking them. Calling a magical effect you have never called before tends to be unreliable, especially in stressful situations. Because each Mage uses magic differently there are no generic spells. For example Biff the apprentice casts "Biffs flame dart" which shoots a candleflame about 5 meters while Tellur the archmage casts "Tellurs flame dart" which fires a homing fireball that chases after a man for up to a kilometer and strikes with enough force to set him on fire.

    Limitations on magic

    Aspects and inefficiencies

A Cosmurgist can only pull on as much power as a God allows him/her to and only connected to the Gods aspect. Mages suffer from a different problem which is inefficiencies. A Mage never manipulates the energies perfectly and the inefficiencies which must be made up for are drawn from the Mages own bodily energy reserves. Mages are often very thin people even if they are rich enough to eat lots.

    Don't mess with the Gods

Simply put you cannot in any way threaten a God with your magic, they are simply too powerful for you to be able to do anything to them.

    Knowledge and Precision

Manipulating a object or creature intricately (that is for transformation, healing and mind-altering) requires great knowledge of how said object/creature works along with a great deal of focused precision which is usually not available in a stressful situation.

    Planar Travel is hard

Travelling or Communicating with another Plane is hard (Hence why Divine Union is a big deal). Portals to another Plane generally cannot be maintained for long. For Example a highly talented Mage might be able to open a portal the size of a doorway to another plane and reliably maintain it for about 5 seconds, it would be accurate to within 100 km on the other plane and would not deposit anyone in to a solid object.

    Time Travel... Not

Using magic to time travel is blatanly not possible. You may alter the local passage of time though (time dilation) but this is hard.

Next worldbuilding post is the last one and deals with Ascension and Godspawn

Okay then You people could maybe help me decide where in the setting the RP it will take place?

After that I think I will start up the OOC thread.

    Ascension

Mortals hold the potential to become greater than normal. There are several stages of this, each one of which is less common then the one before it.

Greatness Threshold: A dedicated few people train so hard and with such dedication that they attract a bit of magic which imbues itself into their bodies. Once this threshold is crossed then superhuman abilities become available. With further training they can become noticably superhuman like say strong enough to lift horses over their heads with little trouble!

Epicness threshold: Once a great mortal has trained enough his/her power becomes significant enough that it starts to attract more power to itself. Epic Mortals will grow more powerful even if they do nothing and if they also train then they power up very fast. They can become powerful enough to walk through lava unscathed, obliterate a man in a single punch, run faster than the fastest horse. Unless killed they will eventually ascend.

Ascenscion Threshold: The mortal is seperated from the material plane forever and gets his/her own plane, becoming a God.

The increased power also applies to magic but to a lesser extent.

    Godspawn

A God can split off a small chunk of it's own power and give it intelligence. It starts it's life as a flying orb of intelligient magic that moves around and observes it's environment in order to learn. After 2-4 weeks it forms into a solid creature whose form and abilities are partially based on the God and partially based on one of the creatures it observed.
For example a Godspawn of Vulca which observed humans would gain a human-like physical body which works like that of a humans except for an affinity for intense heat and some visual feature like flaming eyes that marks it as different.
Godspawn live and die on the whims of the Gods that created them, so long as they are in their patron Gods realm then the God could destroy and re-absorb them effortlessly.
Cosmurgists can create Godspawn on the material plane if given sufficient power and permission from the God they are linked with.

I will post a link to the OOC once it is ready, until then you may bring up ideas.
