Hmm. I read a couple of those years ago. The one that explained when they first arrived on the planet, and another one. The threads come from a large cloud of highly acidic parasites that circles around the sun. They're a space creature. When their path meets the planets, they fall down and their acidic tendencies destroy things. I don't know what a watch wher is. I think to "go on between" might be when they teleport? The dragons used to be tiny drakes about the size of a cat, who could teleport and breathe fire. The first settlers bred them to become... well... massive so that they (the settlers) could use them to survive the threads.

Flower girl is pretty much correct,

Thread is a parasite that comes from a planet (the red star) that has an erratic orbit, around Perns son, when the orbit of pern passes through a cloud left by the red star, the thread, the silvery parasite falls in long thin strands though the air, heance the name thread. When it hits the ground it devours all organic material, plants, people, wood, etc

Going between is teleporting, dragons have the ability to teleport, when teleporting, the dragon and the rider "go between" and are surround by darkness and extreme cold and come out at there desired locations. This can also be used to travel through time not just space, but in most of the books this is not common knowledge.

And a watchweyr is a cousin to the dragons who are nocturnal and flightless for the most part. They act as watchmen for the holds and weyrs

What book are you reading? Best to start with Dragonflight in my opinion, most copies I've seen have a "dragondex" in the back to help learn the terminology and key people in the series

    The first one

Going between had me utterly baffled, for it was mentioned and had largely no explanation as to what the hell going between was

    Thanks
