I think it more has to do with people like you who watch it as a source of humor. That's the audience they go for and hence why they hire actors. But if they happen to catch some actual believers, hey that's cool for them too.

I'm just skeptical that the same channel that runs ice road truckers, used to run several different end of the world series, and a two different shows about pawn shops is actually this clever.
