    Solaris Proelium

OOC Thread for Solarus Proelium. Post your character sheets here! Also transcribed the intro and some questions that were asked. I'll throw up the IC once we've hammered out some details and you guys give me your expectations and ideas to better the world of the RP.

In the year 2017, everything went horribly wrong for the Human race. Religious extremists decided their best way to combat their enemies was to destroy what little bit of oil remained in the world. Little did they know what they had started. The ensuing world war that followed was devastating, ending with billions of people dead, and the onset of a nuclear winter. The few million survivors of this holocaust retreated underground into what was then nuclear and biological research bunkers built by the United States, Germany, Great Britain, France, Japan, Russia, Canada, and China. Those who were not able to reach one of these nations unfortunately perished. Shortly after the onset of this nuclear winter, through satellite communications, the remaining national governments decided that humanity could not survive divided as they were. Due to this, a new world government was formed. This new, unified government was coined the United Earth Confederacy, or UEC for short. After the first couple of years under the UEC the number of people had started to grow. It was discovered by the UEC that the resources that had been evactuated would run out in 50 years or less if the population continued to grow. As such, they ordered the construction of new tunnels and chambers below the bunkers. Geneticists used advanced cloning techniques and stored genetic data to reproduce many crops that had been lost in the war. Inside the largest of chambers below each bunker, giant farms were constructed to produce Oxygen and food for the growing population. By 2045, the resource crisis for the growing population had been averted. But sheer space was dwindling.

A brilliant, German scientist by the name of Christopher Oberheist devised a plan to return to the surface of the earth. While everyone else had been focused on solving the food and air shortages, he had spent the previous 15 years working on a filtered air pump specifically designed to remove harmful radiation and elements from the atmosphere of the earth. The UEC was quick to accept his designs, and adapted them for large scale construction. With the combined workforce of the now over 20 million people living below the surface of the world, it took only 2 years to bring dozens of these filters online. The result was nothing short of a miracle. In only 20 years, the surface of the earth was once again capable of supporting life. The 'Oberheist' filters had done their job well. By 2075, cities had been rebuilt on the surface of the earth, agriculture was booming, and the population had skyrocketed to nearly 7 million people. Knowing that the natural resources of the Earth were dwindling, even with only a fraction of the population the earth had once supported, the UEC turned its focus to the stars.

The first spacecraft the UEC brought into service were little more than glorified space shuttles, designed to construct a shipyard and spaceport in standard earth orbit, as well as laying a foundation for several space elevators. During the construction of these stations, the UEC developed and commercialized more efficient chemical rocket engines, and also developed further on Ion engines; though these early large scale models of the Ion Drive were not yet ready for fieldling by the time the stations were complete. The construction of earth's first cargo and colonization ships were ordered with chemical engines. These ships were crude, little more than boxes with rockets on them, and had a range of just beyond the moon. Using powerful computers, these boxes were launched towards the moon with enough supplies to establish a moon base. By 2100, there were regular shipments of materials and goods from a thriving moon colony going back and forth between the moon, and small colonies had been established on Mars. By 2150, several colonies had been established beyond the asteroid belt on moons. Human populations in the solar system were getting ready to break 20 billion due to genetic acceleration and baby boomers from previous generations following the 3rd world war.

Throughout the expansion of humanity into the solar system, however, many ships had been lost. The UEC had conducted searches for these ships and assumed they had been destroyed when they didn't find any traces. In 2148, a cargo ship on its way back from Mars had managed a short message back to earth just before going dark. The message had detailed the ship was under assault from a ship resembling one constructed from Martian materials. Alarmed, the UEC began arming ships with basic missiles and commissioned the construction of corvette class military ships armed with Gauss cannons and less powerful railguns, known as the Bayonet class corvette. Believing the colonists living on Mars were responsible for this atrocity, Earth dispatched troops to the planet. The ship that had been reported assaulting the cargo ship was never found, and the troops were withdrawn. From this point on, however, relations between Earth and Mars began to degrade. As demand for more luxury goods and rare items on earth increased, the UEC imposed more and more taxes and demands on resources from the Martian colonists. The seemingly more and more oppressed people of Mars began to think. As such, an underground movement was formed. The year is now 2167, and things between Earth and Mars are very tense, but as such there is still unification through out the solar system. It has been discovered that there are several pirate factions operating out of the asteroid belt, which until a few years earlier had been believed uninhabited. The UEC has just finished construction of a new military class ship, known as the Iaculum class cruiser.

If a pirate is what you care to play, then you're more than welcome to. Being a pirate, you can call yourself what ever you choose, but as far as the UEC is concerned, you'll be labled as a pirate. The technology of pirates is somewhat improvised though as they operate off of raiding supply shipments, both for resources and military supplies. What military supplies they have has been adapted to operate under the lesser availible supplies, but may be more powerful in other respects. The imagination is the limit here, so long as it conforms to the overall technology level of the universe.

The majority of the system is colonized on all solid masses, however the outter colonies (Mostly moons and large asteroids beyond the asteroid belt) are mining focused, with a resort type colony on one of Saturn's moons. Which one is the resort has yet to be decided and I'm open to suggestions.

    1. What form of local government is established on Mars? What is Martian culture and religion like? Does Mars have less advanced technology or other fewer privileges due to their tension with the UEC?
    2. Is there a singular pirate captain/overlord/etc, or are there numerous ones in contention with each other? Do the pirates take prisoners and demand ransom, or do they simply pillage and plunder? Do they follow any religion or superstitions like pirates of lore? Do they obey any set of laws or an accepted code of honor? Do they work like mercenaries, taking job offers from whomever offers the most - or do they operate strictly on a pirate basis (which is, see a ship, attack a ship)?
    3. Is there a group of anarchists or separatists on Mars? Do they have one leader? What sorts of propaganda or activities do they engage in? Are they considered criminals, outcasts, or heroes?
    4. Are any other planets or moons colonized or selected for colonization? How are other planets and moons colonized? Were the Oberheist filters redesigned to create an atmosphere? Does the UEC possess terraforming technology? Do the colonists live in specialized domes or structures? Could the domes or structures be sabotaged?

If you can give me effective answers for most of these questions, I'd be significantly more interested in playing this. I'm not trying to be rude, but I have some moderately high standards for science fiction stories.
No worries dude, I don't blame you one bit. I have a bit of a high standard myself lol. The government on mars is a colonial government with a 'Prime Minister' and cabinet of sorts easily controlled by the UEC. Due to this, technology is at roughly the same level as the UEC. All police and military forces on mars consist of martian citizens and report directly to the 'Prime Minister' on mars, making Martial law easier for the UEC if they deem it necessary. Think of something similar to the United States national guard forces. While privileges of the Martian citizens aren't seriously restricted (As of yet), they are heavily taxed and as such prices on goods are heavily escalating, making life difficult. There have been several cases of 'Police brutality' from mainly Earth born volunteers. There is a Military training base on mars apart from the colonies used to train Martian recruits.

There are multiple pirate factions whom often raid each other for supplies and ships, though the UEC doesn't know how factions many as of just yet. They are operating under the assumption there is only one as no clear report or pirate prisoners from counter attacks have made it back to UEC forces at this point. It is believed that a few Bayonet class corvettes have been commandeered when they failed to report in, hence the development of the Iaculum class cruiser. Each pirate faction has a different code they follow. Some may select their targets carefully, specifically targeting poorly escorted or armed cargo fleets, solo cargo ships, etc. Others gain members by attacking passenger ships and recruiting the crew and passengers. Those who agree to join them obviously do, those whom the pirates view as valuable are held, but no ransoms have yet been made, and the remainder are left on the ship as the pirates destroy it. The one thing all the pirate factions have in common is they raid cargo ships for supplies. One pirate faction was formed as a Fanatical group (Specific religion as of yet undecided, I'll need input on that one to make a decision) and has sabotaged many mining operations and the such, but the UEC, being negligent, assumed failures either in the machines or operator error due to lack of real police or military presence beyond the asteroid belt. More than one of the pirate factions has acted on a mercenary basis through a seriously growing 'black market' on several of the colonies. Due to lesser police and military force beyond the belt, they are more well known about and have far more influence in the outter colonies.

There is a Separatist movement on Mars. The leader is as of yet unknown as the group isn't fully visible yet. There will be one as the story moves on though, and this will most likely be an NPC character. Propaganda has just started to crop up in some of the lesser patrolled areas on Mars as tensions continue to rise. While the UEC is aware of their presence, they don't view them as a threat and the police forces ignore them for the most part as of right now, though this movement is intended to grow drastically throughout the RP. Martian Citizens who do know about the movement consider them heroes.

The majority of the moons and planets that have solid ground have already been colonized to some degree, wether its a small outpost, large mining operations, or bustling commerce hub. The ones that have no presence at all have been selected by the UEC for colonization, but it takes time to build the necessary amount of cargo and passenger ships to settle them. The ships themselves, as in other space based stories, are used to construct rudimentary air tight shelters. The 'Oberheist' filters have been adapted to both thicken, thin, and enrich oxygen content on the colonies closer to earth, however the process is a long one, and the filters don't contain the internal resources to create an atmosphere on, say an asteroid. Mars is just getting to the point where the atmosphere is breathable... barely. The majority of the large cities are in large, pressurized domes connected by an underground transportation network, as with Venus. Mercury is un-colonizable due to the heat on the surface, but it is rumored there is a covert base beneath its surface. The outter colonies are of the moon base style, with some of the more populated colonies sporting smaller versions of the Mars domes, particularly that recreational colony that I mentioned before. Yes, these domes can be sabotaged as any man made structure is capable of being sabotaged. However, it would take significant effort to successfully sabotage the larger ones.

A brief description of the 2 Military ships known to exsist:

    Bayonet Class:

This is a small ship about the size of a modern naval Cruiser. It sports Ion engines and thrusters as its primary method of movement, with chemical rocket thrusters for combat and emergency situations where acceleration and stability for firing is required. It is powered by a highly efficient Nuclear Fusion reactor core for electrical power, with Xenon Gas as the primary fuel for the Ion Engines. The Chemical thrusters are fueled with conventional Hydrazine/Oxygen mixtures. These chemical fuel tanks tend to be a weak point on the bayonet if a slug can successfully penetrate the seriously thick armor around them. Weaponry of the Bayonet consists of 8 small railgun batteries, two large Gauss cannons, and 4 small lasers for breaking up debris. The railguns can fire far more quickly than the Gauss cannons, but don't have the penetrating power. They also have the drawback of needing their rails changed out frequently throughout an engagement due to heat build up from the friction of the slugs. These weapons are powered by the main fusion core. The two Gauss cannons have a massive power draw, and as such they both have a far smaller fusion reactor built into them. They contain their own hydrogen storage tanks to power these reactors, but can draw off of the main core's reserves if the tanks are ruptured or empty. The slugs these cannons fire are far larger and have a higher velocity than the railguns can manage, but due to their sheer size, take longer to load. These cannons must also charge up after each shot, further increasing the firing time. She has basic, electromagnetic based shielding which softens the impact of slugs and helps deflect debris. This class of ship, much like the majority of ships built before it, has no form of artificial gravity. This restricts the tour length of these ships to no more than a few months between resupply and R&R for the crews.

    Fire times
    Railguns: 80 rounds/minute
    Gauss Cannons: 8 rounds/minute
Lasers: Continuous beam for 30 seconds

Speed: Can cover the distance between Earth and Mars in 2 months 5 days at maximum burn with planets on opposite sides of the sun. (This is where the fictional part comes into play)
Armor: Can sustain 2-3 direct Gauss hits in the same general area unshielded at the thinnest point
Shielding: Can slow Gauss slugs to a speed that increases armor survivability to 5-6 slug strikes. Decreases effectiveness of Railguns seriously. Generator is somewhat exposed on what would be the bottom of the ship.
    Crew Compliment: 46

    Concept rendering of the Bayonet

    Iaculum Class:
This ship would be the size of a modern Naval Battleship. It contains 12 Railguns, 4 Gauss Cannons, and 7 lasers. Power systems are similar to that of the bayonet, as is the shielding system. Armor is slightly thicker. Its engine power has been doubled, though chemical thrusters are less responsive due to mass. This ship has a more generous cargo bay in the forward section of the ship, and unlike the bayonet, has a rotating habitat section with varrying levels of gravity, depending on which level you are on. The Command section is still located in the zero-G area of the ship, as is the engine room and main cargo bays. The shuttle bay at the nose of the ship as enough space to dock 2 atmospheric shuttles or troop landers. The ship has a hydroponics deck in the rotating section, allowing the crew to grow their own food and produce oxygen. All crew quarters and facilities are otherwise located in the rotating section.

    Railguns: 80 rounds/minute
    Gauss Cannons: 8 rounds/minute
Lasers: Continuous beam for 30 seconds

Speed: Can cover the distance between Earth and Mars in 1 months 27 days at maximum burn with planets on opposite sides of the sun. (This is where the fictional part comes into play)
Armor: Can sustain 3-4 direct Gauss hits in the same general area unshielded at the thinnest point
Shielding: Can slow Gauss slugs to a speed that increases armor survivability to 6-7 slug strikes. Decreases effectiveness of Railguns seriously. Generator is well armored at the bottom aft of the ship.
    Crew Compliment: 98

A concept rendering of the Iaculum (Someday I will fix that blasted model... looks like a propaganda ship :P)

Any questions, feel free to ask The story will most likely start with my character looking for a proper command staff for the Iaculum.

    Controlling player: Yours truly
    Name: Morton Harket
    Faction: Neutral
    Rank: None
    Position: None
    Age: unknown
    Short Biography:
Hardly anything is known about Morton's past. Only he knows what has happened to him and not much at that. He can't remember which planet he was born on, all he can remember is waking up on that medical ship, they told him that he was found on a broken down ship with a bunch of corpses. If they hadn't responded to the distress signal sent out by him he would have died of blood loss. He lost his right arm, the worst part about it was that his right arm is the one he writes with. He can't remember anything prior to waking up in hospital other than almost breaking a button by smashing it. They replaced the hole to which his arm had provided with a bionic arm someone was his guardian angel but he didn't know who. The arm could grapple from long distances and could be flip itself into a sort of rifle when not serving as an arm. Eventually he joined the Earth's army and fought among the brave men there. But after he found out about the high taxes that Earth had Mars binded to he couldn't stand to be around Earthanians (or whatever). He bought a small cruiser and equipped it with a small gun, it couldn't really damage anything bigger than itself, but still better to have a weapon than not to. He took the cruiser and flies about the stars hunting pirates and occasionally landing on either Mars or Earth to refuel.

    Appearance:
Made by the brilliant, Lillian Thorne

    Controlling player: IAmZero
    Name: Kaila Abbey
Faction: UEC (officially) Separatist (secretively); Native Martian
Rank: First Lieutenant, UEC Marines, 344th Regiment (Mars Battalion)
Position: Ranking officer at UEC Mars Operating Station
    Age: 26
Short Biography: Kaila was born on Mars, the same as her parents. While the UEC officially does not recognize Martian born citizens as Martians, the people who are born there do. Kaila considered herself a native Martian, though she never refers to herself in such a way publicly. On the surface, she is a loyal, hard-working UEC marine in the 344th Regiment, which is stationed on Mars. She was recruited when she was 19, and saw an opportunity - not for the UEC, but for Martian independence. Through hard work and dedication, she has rose through the ranks fast. However, beneath her UEC loyalist facade lays a deep-rooted belief that Mars deserves independence. She is a founding member of the secret, and extremely elusive, Separatist Movement. She does not lead the group, however. She supplies them with information on key UEC movements, locations, technologies, and plans.

Alright, there will be 3 pirate factions. The largest of them is focused on fracturing the UEC, which would make their attempts at gaining power over some of the smaller, outter colonies easier. Often times they will preach independence for all of the colonies (Which causes their numbers to grow) when their true goal is to stage a take over for sheer profits. A lot of their resources have been brought to them through people joining of their own free will, however they also raid ships and vulnerable outposts to acquire more high profile items they couldn't otherwise obtain. They make it a point to avoid medical ships in their raids, but they do target passenger ships in an attempt to bolster their numbers and spread their 'cause of freedom' around. This is the group responsible for forming the black markets that are becoming more widely used on all colonies from Mars and outwards. They have a base beneath the surface of one of Jupiter's moons, hidden from any who would come looking for it. Most especially the UEC.

The 2nd pirate faction is a fanatical religious group. They believe that God has left mankind to their own devices, that he was displeased that all of his children were denied joining him at the end of the 3rd world war due to Satanically constructed bunkers. They have as such taken it upon themselves to finish the job of killing the human race. This group takes no prisoners, nor cooperates with any other factions. When they encounter a standard freighter, the disable its engines and any defenses, board it, kill the crew, and tow the ship back to their hidden base in the asteroid belt. Passenger and hospital ships are destroyed on sight. This is the pirate faction that the UEC has encountered, but know nothing about.

The 3rd and final pirate faction is the most mysterious. They started as a break away group from the first pirate faction. The split occurred when some of the members decided they didn't want to flat out lie about their goals to gain numbers. They operate largely as a mercenary group, and have a hand in the black market. Due to this they compete with the first faction often. They only raid cargo ships when they absolutely need to, but otherwise generally steer clear of most UEC ships. They have received a large financial backing from an unknown party to wage a private war against the fanatical pirate faction, so their technology is the most on par with UEC and Martian ships, and far less improvised. Recruitment into this faction is by selection only, and usually targets disgruntled veterans whom have been dishonorably discharged for misconduct. They have control of 2 commandeered Bayonets, however these ships remain away from any location they would be identified by the UEC, and are instead resupplied through highly targeted and detailed raids. The crews are normally spared. This group has taken hostages, but never sent ransom demands. Those people are usually never heard from again.

I do need help naming these factions as I've struck a creative block on names lol

Would adore being permitted to have my character being the lead, or at least a high-up, of the first faction. I have a name I could use, but not sure how appropriate it is.

I would run it as it is now, mostly, a true hit-and-run, smash-and-grab, profits-orientated pirate group, doing what they're doing for personal gain and little else, whose leader holds true about his belief of independence for the colonies from the UEC, but whose methods have deteriorated in the effort to keep up with the further advanced UEC, and a majority of the faction are just bandits and outlaws looking for something they can use for easy shelter. His core beliefs, and the core beliefs of those he keeps close - his most trusted advisors and his loved ones - would be good-hearted and dreaming of true freedom, but branded illegal due to the conflict against the UEC. A good man at hearts, but his methods have degraded, and his faction is being overrun by people who don't care about why they joined in the first place. The takeover would happen, but he wants to lead his own, new nation, and doesn't believe people would join his faction if he were upfront about his end goals.

The way you've described your character I would recommend you playing him high up in that faction, but not the leader of it. The leader of the faction believes in profit and spreading rumors about a fictional freedom in order to gain more supporters and eventually subjugate some, if not many of the outter colonies to rake in as much profit as possible. Now one of his key subordinates, or even his right hand man, would be better for the character you describe, truely believing in a form of freedom, wanting to lead or help form a new nation... Basically an idealistic character.

Hm, should think of a name for that faction! Kind of tough unless you know their motives.

I'm happy with being a lieutenant. My character has sideplans to spearheada group of true 'freedomfighters' either way, a subordinate who breaks away from the main faction to actually try and bring about the freedom he's been preaching works even better as an arc.
