It's true that it is a way to keep himself separate. I think Nat resigned himself to never getting positive attention so he attracts negative attention and uses it as reinforcement of his uniqueness.
He seems like a nice kid underneath all that, so yeah he should participate more.

I think it's a matter of attention versus no attention at all. I used to be pretty excluded when I was a kid, and I would roll with it and just be what people accused me of being. It's about being something as opposed to nothing, and to not look pathetic when people pick on you for something you do by making it your thing.

No yeah that is part of it. I alluded to it by saying he resigned himself. But what he doesn't realize is he's not hemmed in by that. And I think Ace is trying to make him see that.
It might ultimately be futile because Nat is notoriously stubborn and most likely extremely comfortable the way he is.
