Backstory

April 4, 2014. 5:09pm. The time of the Great Tokyo Earth Quake. This Earthquake was rated 11.4 seismic intensity and killed about 148,000 people. This created great land upheavals and massive floods that tore through the capital city. The wave of destruction plunged the country into anarchy. Families were separated and millions of dollars were withdrawn in hopes to bring the nation of Japan back to it's former glory. The citizens of Japan were not completely lost, however. Those who survived relocated to other countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom.

Despite this, the question still remains. What caused the earthquake? It was not just a natural disaster. Much blame was on pollution and global warming. Within theses accusations were also rumors of a being they called Red Man. Numerous reports of this Red Man were thought to be just mass hysteria but comprised of a vivid report of a grinning crimson man who slaughtered a handful of people before secreting some sort of blood red glass.

Many thought theses reports were merely fabrications of the media. In fact, they were the first noted events of the Japanese citizens being infected with that is called Branch of Sin. The Red Man. The Wretched Egg has risen up to plague the world with this 'sickness'.

2024. One would expect humanity to have flourished over the past 10 years and have Tokyo rebuilt and prospering again. Within the 10 years, the attempts to restore Japan to it's former glory proved to be more difficult than ever before. Over 70% of Japan was sunk during the quake. During the disaster, most of Japan's prisons were desecrated, leaving hundreds of inmates to escape and live amongst the rest of the population. To these former inmates, the country being in ruin was no matter. The fact that thousands of families had been broken was insignificant to them. Now, Japan was their turf for them to loot and murder as they pleased. Japan's citizens then were hesitant to return knowing that these convicts were running freely through Japan's ruins.

Until one man who called himself Director changed everything. He promised that if the nation was left in his hands, he would restore Japan to the place people once called home.

And thus Deadman Wonderland was built. Planes, ships, and helicopters all brought the citizens of Japan back home where they were welcomed with bright lights, excitement and music. The occasion? A prison encased by a 30 foot steel wall had risen out of Japan's ruin. This prison was disguised as an amusement park and was a place where people could forget about the past disaster while Japan's criminals served them.

The dark side of Deadman Wonderland. Among the inmates at the facility, most were innocent citizens that were accused of crimes that they never committed. They were imprisoned because they were infected with the blood red glass that caused the Branch of Sin. Their only crime was being pawns of sin born from the Wretched Egg that they came into contact with. That same man is Deadman Wonderland's best kept secret.

Useful Terms

Deadman Wonderland:
DW is a privately-run prison in Tokyo that is also used as an amusement park for the general public. Deadman Wonderland was built for the revival of Tokyo in hopes to pull lots of tourists to watch the prison's special attractions.
The prison was built on the Mother Goose System and has 6 normal wards labeled A-F and one deadman ward labeled G.
This prison was built after the Great Tokyo Earthquake.
Inside the prison and behind the scenes, inmates are cruel and strong and do all they can to survive. In attempts to bring some sort of semblance and sanity, prisoners were issued personal cards with security codes to hold their currency known as Cast Points.
For every prison, there are those deemed more dangerous than any other, and Deadman Wonderland is no different! In DW, such prisoners are on ‘Death Row’, said sentence being a specialized collar resting about their necks constantly subjecting them to poison; these collars are capable of the shock and restraining properties of the average prison collars as well as a poison. The poison is fed constantly, and the only antidote is given to the prisoners as ‘candy’, a bitter treat that must be taken every three days, otherwise the poison will take affect and the ‘Death Row Rule’ will be put into place.

Mother Goose System
The Mother Goose System is a device made to seal the Wretched Egg. It's located in the center of Deadman Wonderland.
There are two parts of the MGS, the Center Part and the Chorus Blocks.
The Center Part plays The Lullaby to the Wretched Egg in order to seal it's powers.

Prisoners
The life of a prisoner is, all in all, fairly even, depending on how well one is at avoiding trouble. To follow all the rules, participate in a good number of events, and generally be easy going is to lead a half decent life in prison; after all, Cast aren’t too hard to come by, and if you aren’t on Death Row, you have no expensive obligations concerning purchases! Of course, for every rule-follower, which are rare indeed in prison, there are the true thugs. Operating just outside the guard’s eyes, these are the ones who bully others, steal Cast, and are generally crazy. Of course, while the thugs tend to live easy lives due to stolen Cast as well, they often have items on them considered ‘illegal’ in DW, and therefore are subject to harsh punishments if the guards see any slightest hint of wrongdoing.

For Death Row prisoners, things are a bit more hectic. Not only must they buy ‘Candy’ every third day, but if a crime large enough is committed, they could very well be killed at any time by any of the higher-ranking guards. Likewise, however, these thugs can get by more on reputation then physical work, garnering more Cast from their targets then they would if they were the regular thug… but again, if one is caught threatening other inmates, who knows what terrible fate may await?

Deadmen:
Deadmen are those who have been infected by the Nameless Worm and gives them the ability to manipulate their own blood. These Deadmen are brought into the custody of Deadman Wonderland and locked in a special section of the prison labeled with a "G" and have no interaction with average prisoners, aside from the occasional paid-for visit to the rest of the prison.
These Deadmen are forced to participate in events known as 'Carnival Corpse' by the Director. At Carnival Corpse, they are pitted in battle against other Deadmen. The winner is rewarded with a massive amount of Cast, but the looser looses a limb or in most cases, their life.
The collars on the Deadmen stopped administering the poison, leaving them with a while lot of cash and no obligation to buy 'candy'.

Branches of Sin
The Branches of Sin are the powers each Deadman has, allowing them to use their own blood in order to use incredible powers, the likes of which can hardly be imagined by the average human. Usually, the Deadman can train his powers, to better understand how to use them or perhaps be more conservative with them; after all, if one were to use their powers too much, they may die of blood loss, a fate nobody wants. Various forms of this power exist, from creating blades to shooting ‘bullets’ to even making whips; who knows what sort of other powers may exist?

Carnival of Corpses
Is a game very similar to gladiator battles in the coloseum in Rome. The similarity is the sick, brutal battles that are viewed upon as entertainment. In this case, the gladiators are Deadmen, and before each battle, the viewers take bets on who will win. If the looser of a Carnival of Corpse game is alive, they must take place in a 'penalty game'. This is where the deadman looses a body part or organ based on chance. These range from their hair to the heart.

Undertakers
Undertakers are a special force. They are the worst criminals who survived the "special correctional program". They are also called the Anti-Deadmen Corps. The Undertakers possess technology called the Worm Eater that allows them to nullify a Deadman's Branch of Sin ability.

Cast Points
Cast points are the form of currency within Deadman Wonderland with one cast point equaling the same amount as one yen/dollar as like regular currency Cast Points can be received from doing a certain job or winning a contest.

Plot

A small group of Deadmen have formed an organization called The Freedom Fighters. The Freedom Fighters want the world to know the monstrous things that are happening to all prisoners in DW. However it's not so simple. They are still force to take place in the Carnival of Corpses every month. However, they try to injury and not kill the other Deadmen they fight, especially if they are part of the Freedom Fighter organization. They are starting to come up with a plan to escape DW and release the information to the world. However, a lot of the Deadmen are working for the Undertakers and are trying to stop the Freedom Fighters from escaping. There are tensions rising between both groups...who knows if a battle or war will break out?

History:
Senji Takamura. Prisoner 9999. Was given the death penalty at the age of 14 for being charged with the murder of 15 students and teachers along with his own parents. Yet the source from this was unknown. He wasn't popular but he wasn't unpopular. His parents raised him in a loving environment of considerable wealth. He had many friends and wasn't that bad looking. So why the murder? Why the answer was simple. Beneath the surface of his calm collected face and his seemingly happy life he had the mind worthy of being called insane. One person even called him a genius.

His insanity stemmed from his childhood. His father had come home late while his mother was away and brought another woman into their home. He sat in the corner patiently thinking his father would acknowledge him and remove the thoughts o him being with another woman from his mind. He didn't. With the up most twisted perversion his father cheated on his mother before their son's eyes. The boy neither wept, nor threw a tantrum. His body stayed still his eyes losing their once happy shine. then the unthinkable happened. After committing the taboo in his parents marriage his father killed and dismembered the woman while her back was turned. His father disposed of the body and left no trace of neither act nor evidence that she even existed. As he watched his father murder in cold blood his slowly licked his lips at the site of the blood flinging across the room. a few drops even landing on his lips as he licked them. His mind awoke from that day. He never smiled,he never laughed, He was quiet and calm, at least on the surface.

He joined underground cults and fight clubs. Sating his thirst every night by committing bloody rituals or mutilating his opponents in battle. Then he came across an interesting little book. a book filled with dark secrets and corrupt philosophies."The Sinners tree." and rightfully so as the people who often were given the power were locked away as death row inmates or worse. He laughed when he learned power and began using it in his fights. His laugh became twisted and corrupt mimicking the way his mind had morphed from reading the philosophy of the dark cults and power he had studied. This laugh often sounded like "kishi" through clenched teeth. After that He began his killing spree. finally caught and sentenced to death. he was placed in an 8X10 at the age of 14. His mind never broke. Instead it used the system to his own gain his mental sting and power growing as he fed off more of the dark philosophy that he studied. He even came up with a few theories of his own.

His fights never stopped and he eventually gained the name "The Bloody Devil" at age 16. after much planning and corruption he was set free from his prison now free to roam the streets again and spread his ways of the blood at 18. How could murderer get out you ask? Simple. Since his mind had grown sharper during his solitary hours in the prison he increasingly became more charismatic.He used his mental charm and his oh so calm demeanor to gain a private audience with the mayor in the city. She was a beautiful woman one who'd just gone through a very bad divorce. After a few hours of smooth talk and mental poison he was able to get the mayor to call of the guards from the entire block he was in. To further seal his escape he seduced the woman with false promises of never leaving her and always loving her. Foolishly she fell for it. He even went as far as to take her for his own lustful desires. Of course she willingly agreed to the deed. After their deed was done She agreed to give him a full pardon on his crimes. That evening she went on national television and announced that decision. As he left with her from the prison in her limo He decided to reward her for her use.

After entering her home and seducing her to her bedroom. He murdered her quite humanly He didn't even use his branch of sin how thoughtful was that? No instead after a few drinks he slipped a drug into her drink that knocked her out. Afterwards he slips a cyanide capsule into her system and leaves a convincing suicide note in her hand writing. Since he was granted a full pardon and the last death was convincingly done different than his usual methods he would not be suspect to this death. Even if he is recognized, only those holding a grudge against him for the 15 people he killed before would recognize him enough for it to be a problem. He exited her house soon after and continues his murders to this day. He went from a branch and became a whole tree. A tree of sin.

History: Carlos was a poor child, living in NYC. As with most hispanic children growing up on the streets of the metropolis... Carlos was approached by the gang known as the Latin Kings. And like many kids, he readily accepted their offer. Initially, he was relegated to things like delivering messages or small amounts of drugs and contraband to other area gang members... but on his 16th Birthday, one of the bigger names in the local 'chapter' of the Latin Kings gave Carlos a tattoo on his wrist, a weapon, and then told him it was time to pull his weight for real. By this point, of course... Carlos was ready and eager to do just that, and gladly accepted the task of strong-arm robbery.

A few years later, Carlos was a big name in the NYC Latin Kings. And when some punk who had murdered his family and fled to America was brought to him, Carlos told the kid the following. "Your tough, and not afraid to kill. I can see that much, my friend. But that alone doesn't get you my respect. You got to earn my respect, guy. Until then, you're just another face to me." Despite Carlos' standing on Nero and his recent and bloody history, many of the LKs had a fair amount of respect for the new face. Something Carlos expected. People who were proven hard-asses often garnered respect regardless of their deeds in a gang. It wasn't long before Carlos had nothing but respect for the young man, though...

One Year Later... Carlos and a few of the other big-name Kings planned a meeting to discuss one of their larger drug operations. Unbeknownst to the rest... one of those in attendance was a police informant. The meeting went very badly very fast, and guns were soon sounding off in an unmistakable staccato of rat-tat-tats that anyone and everyone associated with a firefight. Nero had been driving Carlos' getaway car, and even managed to hold his position despite two police cruisers posting up nearby and peppering the young man's vehicle with gunfire. Carlos himself came out and dove into the back seat, bleeding from several gunshot wounds. Nero fired off an entire clip from his pistol, climbed into the driver's seat, and took off. Several hours later, Carlos awoke in a safe-house with Nero standing guard near the door despite having seevral bleeding wounds himself. It was then that the young man had earned Carlos' unwaivering respect.

A few years passed and Nero fled the city. Carlos refused to pursue him despite the normal course of action being to kill gang members that left. He had saved Carlos' life... and Carlos thought it fitting to spare his now. Little did he know that doing so would cause several of his underlings to turn on him. Carlos was in the middle of being transported to prison, when an incident similar to the "Red Hole" that had occurred in Tokyo... exploded into existence over the Bronx in NYC. This caused the gang member to be exposed to the Nameless Worm, though he did not know it until later. Charges went through without a hitch... 21 counts of Armed Robbery, 13 counts of extortion, 12 counts of Murder ( of 1st and 2nd degrees ), 6 counts of Drug Trafficking, and 1 count of Possession with Intent to Distribute. The Death Penalty was almost instantly layed down on the man. But due to the intervention of an as-of-yet unknown party... Carlos was transferred to the Deadman Wonderland Facility in Las Vegas, Nevada... where he met up once again with Nero, oddly enough.

The two were happy to see one another, of course... and were soon making schemes to get out of the place and start anew on the outside. To make things easier... the two often conversed in Spanish, much to the disdain of those around them.

Branch of Sin Description: Carlos' namesake of Shrike-Thrush was given to him for a very specific reason. His Branch of Sin contains a potent batrachotoxin, and is nothing to be trifled with. His foes should proceed with caution.

Rank: A-Rank
Description: Carlos forms a small ( one to five inch diameter ) ball of blood, and hurls it at his foe. Due to his manner of throwing, by flicking his wrist at the end of the throw... this attack is rather fast. The ball explodes on impact, dealing damage out to a range of about five feet per inch of diameter of the ball.

Rank: B-Rank
Description: Carlos forms a small ( same as above ) ball of blood and throws it at his foe. The ball does not explode or splatter, but rather thins and extends outward in a ten-foot spike ( 1 spike per inch of diameter ) in a direction according to Carlos' will. He may throw several of these without expanding them, in order to create a trap for his enemy.

Description: Carlos can only use this technique if he is at least moderately injured and/or bleeding from several places. This attack causes several "Shrike's Talons" spheres to form and then conform around his body. Should the foe initiate close-combat against him while this technique is active, he skewers them with several of the poison-laced spikes. The drawback of this tech is that is slows Carlos down quite a bit, and he is no longer able to zip around the arena as he normally would.

History: Well, you'd think a cool-looking person like Nanda would be the one least expected to do anything crazy right? Indeed he is the cool-headed of the group, but you know how they are, the colder they act, the hotter they get when their fuse is burnt. Even though he was a really successful student, top of his class, student body president and the whole nine yards.... he wasn't satisfied. Society didn't satisfy him. It was just rotten and full of fake smiles and fake trust. Even the ones close to him were only that way because he was important. One fateful day, he entered the precinct of the school, completely normal, and started walking around everywhere, saying that "it's the duty of the president to make sure the school is well-maintained". A few hours later, the students noticed the teachers wouldn't come to class and the whole school convened at the gym, as per a strange announcement by the director's voice. Once they got there, they found the body's of the whole faculty teachers, including the director and vice in there, all stone-cold dead. All doors of the school were locked, all windows too. And, as a finishing touch, Nanda had spread around the school home-made bombs of his making. He made a beautiful speech about how wonderful they all looked, squirming in fear, and how delicious their parents' faces would be, crying in pain of losing them. This was no hostage situation. Police negotiations failed before they even began. Nanda didn't care anymore. Click! And the whole building went sky-high.... so to speak. Everyone inside the building died, except for the author of that crime, which some thought strange and extremely ironic. There wasn't even a trial for him. Neither did his parents say anything. He was immediately thrown into Deadman Wonderland and "killed" in the first hour he was there. Now, he lives in solitary confinement, because, even "dead", his beastly nature is as dangerous as his cold one, only being let out for the Corpse Carnival, which he doesn't really hate, but sees as more of a necessary thing to survive, or as a gift for good behavior, which doesn't really last long, as he's known for his usual trouble-making and his snake-like personality.

Branch of Sin Name: Beast's Awakening
Branch of Sin Description: This Branch of Sin consists on making Nanda bleed. Depending on where he bleeds, his blood will harden and form beastly appearances. Say, for example, his mouth starts coughing up blood. The blood will harden into fangs on his teeth. Nails bleeding? Claws. And so forth.

Name: Claw Shooter
Rank: C
Description: A rather simple ability. By focusing more blood in his claw hand, the user thrusts his hand towards the opponent, sending out a slightly weaker hardened replica of his claw. This replica can fly to about 25 feet.

Rank: A
Description: Spinning around at high speeds, the user will slashing and biting around, sending out a blood wave of repercussions on the air, giving those who are hit the attacks that are being performed. The area of effect is of 25 feet radius of the user.

Name: True Beast's Awakening

Description: By letting go of all his intellect, Nanda is able to use his Branch of Sin's true abilities. He attains a beast-like state where he can move at incredible speeds, enough to actually oppose the Undertakers, and becomes endowed with a beast's strength as well, which has been said to be able to break bones by simply grabbing them. Sadly, this takes too much toll on Nanda, as it uses too much blood. After using this, he's unconscious for at least 3 hours.

History: Red is a new girl, as in a one week new. The thing is though, she has no memory of anything before being here. She just ended up here. Since she doesn't know of anything out side of this life she really doesn't care about what happens to herself, she is nice and doesn't like to hurt people really bad, unless it's in Carnival Corpse. She doesn't mind fighting the fighting, because she thinks it's normal and everyone likes the fights.
Occasionally Red has weird flash backs but she forgets them as fast as she remembers them, so it doesn't really affect her. Since she's basically only lived a week she is really quiet and doesn't do much. Not much talking, or anything. Red is a fantom.
She's only been in one match, and she didn't lose. But just barely.

Branch of Sin Name: Death's Kiss
Branch of Sin Description: Red is always bleeding from the mouth, most of the time its such a small amount it's not even noticeable, and when she crys it's blood. When she's anger, battling, or in pain the blood increases immensely.

Rank: A
Description: With a simple touch to her lips and a flick of her wrist, Red Beak can fire off a serenade of death so lightning-quick that her foes hear just a whisper. The projectile fired is reminiscent of the throwing stars or spikes of the old ninja, and can be very tough to dodge at close range. (Thin Projectile, a bit like a throwing star. Between 80-90ft the sooner it hits you the worse the injury.)

Description:Tears shed for any reason... are not to be wasted. The blood excreted in the tears forms razor sharp needles that float into the air and can be forced to fall from above in a shower of pain and suffering. (Razor sharp (like short sewing needles) tears they fall from above like rain, projectile. They go up like 10-15 feet, then down to the ground can rain diagonally 25-30 feet.)

Description: Red Beak's goodbye kiss with a twist, the bloody kiss hardens black and shaders to hundreds of pieces. The catch is the shards are sickening easily inducing fever or vomiting. (Kinda of a mix of other two abilities, and a little bit more. Between 100ft max. Due to Red being a beginner she can't do this yet.)
