    The Secret of Wella

"Time was wilting away, yet my desire to know more was growing bigger and bigger like ripples enlarging in a clear stream. I could vividly remember the day I had picked up the flat, gray stone and skipped it across the blue stream I'd grow up by. Boy, those days seem so distant now..." Wella said, the creases near her eyes deepening with her smile as she told you the story by the fire. But, you were all just little children, gathering near the wise old Wella, not really comprehending the stories she told you.

When the adults weren't around, Wella described life in the old world that she lived in as a child, and how she slowly watch it melt away. First, her own guardians were taken-her parents who had always been there for her. Then, it was Wella's own siblings. When Mother Nature had finally finished wiping out the Earth, Wella was one of the three-hundred people who were left.

She told of dreams of before the wipe out, and how she struggled to survive in the new world. "They all just separated away in small groups, much like the amount of you little children-but I had no idea where to go, I was only a youngen'," Wella frowned, her white hair glowing near the blazing fire. "I found one that was willing to take me in-I didn't care where it was. They fed me, clothed me properly. But the Yurens-the people who governed the group-were much stricter than they are now. Should someone be born with a defect of any kind, they were whisked away. Now, I shouldn't say much about that, you little ones are much too young to know of what happened then."

"Some things were unexplained. I tried to learn all of the secrets of the mysterious village, for I did not know next to nothin' 'bout the history of its people at all. Some day, you'll be curious too."

"I am curious, Wella! Tell us the secrets!" A little girl pleaded.

"Now, now, I didn't learn much. But what I did learn surely won't be hard to find for you bright children. All I can say is in your older life, keep your eyes and ears wide open-everything happens for a reason, dears."

But now, things have changed. The Yurens have been quite different to you lately. People have vanished. You hear children crying in the night. Nothing seems to be just like Wella described, when she was alive. You wish you would've listened to her better-you grew curious, just as she promised would happen.

    Setting
The village has dirt roads to walk on, and there are no vehicles for transportation, but wagons that men can push to carry smaller loads. The buildings are all made from lumber, twigs, and other things supplied by the forests that men build. For some reason, the Yukens just seem to be able to build more complex buildings-with bricks and stable foundations, glass windows, and things like that. The clothing they get depends on what you can find; richer people get animal skinned clothing stitched well, others get a few rags. Some families that have enough coins can buy meat, some people catch what is near them, or people with men in the family can hunt. Hunting is dangerous, though, many debate whether it is worth the risk and are strict about only buying it. Others grow their own gardens. You can find water in nearby streams, where you can clean yourself or wash clothing.

Time period is only what you can make of it-I can say that it's been about sixty years since the "wipe out" and that there was never electricity.
