First off, if I get any serious interest in this, I'll elaborate on this further. Until then, I won't have precise details because I'll be putting my effort into other projects if no one cares.
tl;dr This is an interest check in a concept, not a full RP
So, I was watching the science channel when, on one of the shows, they mentioned how the heat created around a warp bubble could scorch the earth. So here's the scenario:
Up until this point in 2013, we've had no contact with other intelligent life forms. Many took this to mean that there weren't any advanced life forms around us in the universe, while others just thought they might be too far off for their technology to be able to communicate with us. The truth of the matter is, they wanted it that way. There's been an intergalactic system in place for countless eons, and they've deemed that only civilizations which can reach the stage where they can reach out to the stars and contact this larger order of existence are culturally evolved to be a stable member of the system as opposed to one that is overly war-like and hostile. In essence, they let these civilizations grow up. Now, just because they don't allow war-like and juvenile civilizations into the order doesn't mean they don't have war. In fact, that's how we found them.
In the fall of 2013, a war between two civilizations reached out and touched us. One of the fleets was warping past our planet in flight from a larger enemy fleet, a fairly routine matter. But, on the ship, calculations weren't entirely accurate. The warp was not only close enough for the earth to detect it, but to damage it. In a short period of time, the entirety of the eastern hemisphere and part of the western hemisphere was scorched in an instant. Parts of the ocean closest to the wave of heat were vaporized and turned into a scalding cloud of mist that was was quickly heading for the rest of the world. With fires depleting oxygen, the atmosphere slowly ripping apart, and clouds of fiery ash moving in on the parts of the earth that survived initial impact, the Americas became a living hell with a short expiration date. In a act of what some describe as compassion and others describe as the duty of a sentient race, the pursuing fleet stopped by earth and sent down "life boats" to what was documented as the global capital of this young race: New York. They saved as many as they could, but there were only so many that could be rescued before the environment became too dangerous.
You are one of the refugees on this life boat (though aliens may be allowed to be played). You're a member of a now extraordinarily tiny race, an outsider in a system that you were never supposed to witness, and without a planet to call your home any more. A species born into this new world from the fire.

*While I was on one of my many crusades against flies in the pet shop and me and my dad had one of our fun little verbal battles* "I will take that fly swatter from you and beat you to death with it. You're death will be slow and painful, and it will take a long while, but my arm will not give out before your life ebbs away. -My dad " *Me: laughing my ass off. Customers in store: Awkward silence.*
You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you this look that says, "My God your right! I never would have thought of that!" -Dave Berry
