    A World In Chaos (IC)

Cat was walking through the courtyard of the safe Zone, as it was called, as she thought back about how she'd gotten here. She'd spent so much time running hiding and wondering when it would all be over that when she found this outpost in the middle of the Nevada desert. She couldn't help but feel like She had received a blessing from god or who ever was watching over her fucked up life now. The place had a working purifier which they used to purify rain water into drinking water. They had solar power wind power hell even hydro power fueling the purifier. They had a little farm inside the outpost that grew what ever they needed, mostly potatoes. It was a paradise in hell. She stopped in the middle of the courtyard to look around at the makeshift shacks serving as homes. The walls that had been brought up from steel car parts and anything they could scrounge it was nice. They had made such a life here it was hard to think of going back out into the wastes. Hell she'd even fallen in love. She smiled softly as she looked up to the sky watching birds fly overhead. But as she watched. More and more birds flew overhead, until she finally realized they weren't flying they were running from something. But before she could say anything to anyone or do anything There was a loud crunching noise from the eastern wall.

And then, a loud roar filled the air. A Gene 4 had lead a horde of type 2 and 3 walkers to there outpost by following the birds. Cat stared in horror at the wall as it grew further and further indented before screaming out "Robert! Run!" Cat made a b-line for the makeshift garage they had and began loading up the school bus one of the survivors had drove in on. It was reinforced with steel plating and had fence wiring wrapped around every window with razor wire lining the top to help stop the dead from climbing ontop of it. And ontop of that it had a large railroad piece welded to the front adding a nice ram to the front for running through small obstacles and the dead. She quickly began to load as much diesel fuel as she could into the back of it as well as some other rations. She and a few other survivors had made a plan to meet at the bus if anything ever happened and now was that time . . .

    [Present Time]

Cat sat in the driver seat driving down the long dirt road of the desert as she tried to keep her eyes open. She was tired and the sun was beginning to go down. She could still here the sounds of the dead and the rest of the survivors as they were torn to shreds and eaten alive. When they tried to escape the tank (AKA Gene 4) had tried to chase them down but they had lost it about an hour ago. She still drove though trying to keep from freaking out. She didn't say anything as the sound of the motor and the ground rolling under the tires echoed in the bus. They had 6 jery cans of diesel each only holding 6 gallons of gas and the bus had a 25 gallon tank. They would have to get gas sooner or later to refill what they used otherwise they'd have to abandon it sooner or later. And that was he last thing she wanted. Finally to break the silence and said "H-hey. How is everyone d-doing? Anyone h-hurt?"

Lulu always carried her canvas bag with her. She’d found it at the safe zone here in Nevada when she had lost her dad barely a week ago. She’d stuffed all her things into it, including her pistol. She found she could be a little trigger happy if she didn’t keep it away from her hands until she absolutely needed it. Then again, who could blame her? In this hell of a world they lived in now, you almost needed to constantly keep your finger on the trigger… whether to kick infected ass or to kill yourself if you got bit.

She sighed, tying her shoes and tugging at the bottom of her khaki cropped cargo pants. She seemed to live in her cargo pants and black tanks nowadays. As she stretched, enjoying the bright sun for a brief moment of peace, she heard it… a sound from the east wall. She turned quickly and heard the roar that made her grit her teeth in anger. She knew by the sound there were too many to kill them all, and wasn’t going to be stupid. She held onto her bag tightly, her deep blue eyes narrowed as she ran to the garage, looking for an escape vehicle. She saw some of the others loading up into a school bus and hopped on just before the doors closed and they headed out.

The drive was a silent, panicked one. She wanted to offer to drive, but the girl was gripping the wheel so tightly, Lulu pushed the thought from her mind. She glanced out the windows and saw how night time was about to take place. Her eyes widened, looking ghost like against her pale skin and she shook her head. She hated the night time… she hated the dark. Hopefully someone in the bus had a flashlight. If so, she was going to be their best buddy for at least tonight. “Just fine,” Lulu said in an even tone to the girl driving, hoping the lack of panic in her voice would help at least someone feel better.

Usually, April loved adventures. But she had to say- a gene 4 busting in the walls of the only stable home she'd had since the plagues happened was not an adventure. She'd tried to fight at first- she wouldn't have been able to forgive herself if she'd run away like a coward- but she'd learned she was pitifully incapable of shooting actually deadly zombies. Her bullets had maybe punched a few holes in a gene 3 type 3, And that's when she'd realized she hadn't had a choice but to run, run or die, a crushing ultimatum for her. How could she stand to refuse a challenge when said challenge meant the loss of her home? ...She didn't know. And yet, she was here, a bus running away/

Only a week. She'd only been there a week and it was gone. She'd made friends. April shifted uncomfortably in her ragged jeans and pastel yellow shirt, in the seat of the school bus she was in, her hair sticking to her shoulders as she sweated from the full sprint she had taken to the bus. Her green eyes surveyed the area- it was a school bus, yeah. She'd always been bad at school. But then again, this school bus ride was hardly going to be school... April checked she had everything. She patted down her harness, seeing the water, food, pitons, and rope, relieved.

Maybe what was going to happen would be like an adventure? Maybe she'd have a chance! She just had to try and survive. Silence reigned as April brooded in her thoughts, before someone, the driver, asked if they were OK. April thought for a bit. "Yeah. Fine." But April wasn't. Nowhere was safe, and a chance at the life she'd had before was gone. Funny... the kind of life April had always wanted, and now that she was thrust into it she cringed from it. ...But she'd have to get used to it. There was other option, was there?

Vince was sitting in the room he called his own, making sure all his belongings were packed away. He was trying to set up another new home here, though he didn't see the point any longer, for they never lasted long anyway. He guessed it calmed his mind, having some place to call your own, even if its only for a little while. He was about to put his gun on the drawer but deiced against it, considering that the gun had been his only protection since the out break started, better to keep it on him.

He had just unpacked the last of the few possessions he had left in this world, when one of the most terrifying sounds he had ever heard, and worst of all, he recognized it imminently. The only thing he could think of was the bus, his only way to get out of this alive, but first he had to get there. This couldn't have happened at a worse time, all of his supplies were put away in his new room, he wouldn't have time to get any of it if he wanted to make it to the bus in one piece. He ran to the closet and graded his emergency pack, which he always kept ready for a quick escape. With pack on, he made a mad dash to garage.

Where did that tank go? They had lost the tank about an hour ago, but Vince was sure it wasn't gone. They didn't give up that easy. He had been looking out the back since the beginning of this journey, hoping, praying that the tank wouldn't catch them. If it did, they all might as well be dead. He was still looking out the back when he faintly registered the driver ask about injury's. Still intent on the missing tank, he replied, "No problems."

Not two hours ago Albert had been cleaning a set of assault rifles that had been collected and deposited into a makeshift armoury of which he was placed in charge, he had been whistling a carefree tune to himself when the shouts and screams began. After stepping outside and spotting the hoard of infected that had swarmed the camp he rushed inside and grabbed his three weapons and then as many others as he could, he had fired off a few shots at some of the faster ones and managed to fight his way to the armoured bus.

Now sat at the back of the bus with his Winchester resting on his lap, looking blankly out of the back window all he could think about was the waste of lives and supplies. "All that searching for nothing." He grumbled irritably to himself. His thoughts were interrupted by Cat's voice. "I'm still here..." He said with a sigh. "It's just a shame so many of the others aren't." He wasn't especially attached to any of them but since the outbreak they'd been the closest thing to friends he'd had.

Luther had been fortunate enough to be near the bus when the horde descended on the "safe" zone. As it came under attack, he directed and, quite literally, loaded survivors onto the bus. It pained him that not everyone would make it on-board, but saving as many as he could was the best he could hope for. The attack was so sudden; it felt like mere seconds until he climbed in himself and told the girl in the driver's seat to step on it. As the bus sped away from the ruined camp, the wave of infected started to make after them. Remarkably, some of the faster type 3s were keeping up on the trail of the bus. Luther had popped one of the bus's top hatches and lifted himself up, standing on seats opposite one another. With his torso sticking out of the bus roof, he let loose on the infected, downing several with well-placed shots. A while later and they were clear for the moment. Hopefully, they had outpaced the rest of the horde.

    ---

Luther hopped down, back under the roof and made his way to the front end of the bus. "Looks clear. I think we've lost them, at least for now." He rested his carbine across his lap and leaned around the side of the driver's seat. "Where do you plan on taking this bus now?"

Casting a glance behind him, Luther took a mental count of nine total on the bus, him making ten. Not as many as he'd hoped for, but he decided the larger the group, the tougher it would be. More people meant more competition for what resources they could scavenge, and more people meant more chance to attract attention. He decided that a smaller band such as this, unfortunately, had a better chance of success out in the open world.

Robert was catching his breath from the run, his heavy breathing was probably from him smoking all the time in the past. He wiped the sweat of his brow and fixed his shirt a bit, he checked his pocket to make sure he had all his equipment. He looked out the bus window and just sighed while starring a little at the desolate area. He thought back to the Gene 4, they were freaks on steroids, luckily they didn't keep on the trail cause they weren't easy to kill. The other ones were more scrawny and easier to kill. He hated the constant change of environment, having to change homes every so often it was unsettling, each day gone by he grows a little bit more restless. He looked at everyone on the bus, he didn't trust any of them nor care for them, except for Cat who he's grown attached too hoping she could help him with his personality disorder.

Although he seen Cat as a temporary fling, he knew that she would be the key to keeping his sanity. He looked up at Cat as she asked if anyone was hurt, he shook his head lightly with a blank expression on his face. "I'm fine." He told her, he sat in the front by her. He got up from his seat and looked at everyone coldly. "How are we on supplies? If we don't really need that much then we can just keep driving without having to make pit stops." He asked everyone, he wanted to make sure they were good with their resources, especially since resources are scarce. He reached down his pocket and took out a couple of bullets for his gun, he knew if he ran out then he was screwed, he also felt some batteries in his pocket for the flashlight and in the other pockets were two walkie talkies, with limited range.

Two hours ago Stathan was in his little shack reading a detailed book on new and advanced procedures in cardiology. A normal thing for him to do from time to time in a not-so-normal setting. He didn't have anyone to practice on, nor was he in a hospital anymore but he figured he might as well keep his mind sharp. Never know what could go wrong in a world gone mad.

As he was reading he heard an all too familiar roar. "Shit!" he said to himself getting up and quickly grabbing the things he needed. His desert eagle which had a full clip, a flash light and a canteen filled with water. Forgetting his other clips in the shack he ran for the bus and only noticed it a little too late cursing himself for his forgetfulness. He heard Cat who seemed to be behind the wheel ask if everyone was alright. "Everything's good over here," he said his chest still rapidly moving up and down.

You can be part of war for about two hundred years and the adrenaline will still get to you, you don't always get used to it and in a way it was a good thing. It keeps you alive. He looked back from the window and saw the abominations roaring and moaning. Damn things ruining the world! He couldn't wait until all of them were rid of.

If I am randomly MIA, it usually means I'm far too busy with medical school. I'll try and make a notice before any one of my leave of absences.

(I was going to wait for others to post but no one seems to be. . . so . . .)

Cat glanced up at the rear view mirror for a moment before slowing down and pulling off the road and hit the parking break as it came to a stop. She stood up and opened up the bus door climbing out. She needed air she needed to think she needed a safe place. But that was gone. And now she had all her friends to worry about once again. She walked as far away from the bus as she could until her legs gave out from stress and she dropped to her knees. She stared at the ground shaking before pulling her gun from her holster at her side and pressed the barrel against her temple and screamed out as loud as she could "FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!" She pressed her finger against the trigger and pulled it as far as she could without firing it. She gritted her teeth tightly sending a pain through her jaw before letting her arm go limp and drop to her side as she choked back tears. Everything she had started to love, gone in the blink of an eye. She was left with a few people to care about and she still had Robert That was something.

Lulu heard some other people echo her, claiming they were just fine or okay. She watched as the man who had been shooting infected after opening up part of the bus’s roof spoke to the driver. Cat didn’t seem to be listening though. She seemed to be in a sort of trance. Lulu tilted her head slightly, wondering if perhaps this girl wasn’t used to this world yet either. Lulu knew now how temporary everything was. It didn’t make it less shocking, but she was able to keep her wits about her even in such a situation as this. She sighed heavily and looked out the window, hearing someone ask about supplies. She turned her head and looked at the man.

“I just have my own personal effects… water bottle, gun… No food unfortunately,” she said flatly. She had gone 20 days without food before she set out with her father on that fateful day he’d died, and since she just hadn’t felt food was as much of a priority. She just knew she needed water and a gun. “Does anyone have a flashlight though? I’m curious…” she trailed off, her eyes glancing around to the other passengers. If they had to stop somewhere without electricity or candles, she was finding someone with a flashlight. It was at the forefront of her still.

As she was looking around, she felt the bus lurch and her eyes immediately went to the girl driving who pulled off the side of the road. “Oh I can drive…” she started, but the girl bounded off the bus, “if your tired,” she ended up mumbling, running a hand through her dark hair before leaning her back against the window and sighing once more. She didn’t like stopping like this. She heard a scream from the girl and frowned, turning around to see the girl with a gun to her head out the window. “What the hell?” Lulu whispered. After they’d gotten away from the attacking horde, this girl was pointing a gun to her forehead. “Stable Mable out there needs a hug,” she mumbled. She knew her degree in psychology could come in handy here. She sighed again and got out of her seat, walking down the aisle and out of the bus doors, standing behind the girl who had dropped the gun to her side luckily. “Listen,” she said softly, caringly, “Come back onto the bus. We can all talk about where we need to go next and you can just relax. Get a chance to think?” she said, hoping her words helped enough to just get them moving on the road once more.
