Midnight - Dimension-hopping modern fantasy, featuring demons and stylishness.

An incredibly long time ago, back before there was any sort of historical recording going on, humans weren't the dominant species on the planet. The world was ruled by much more powerful and not-so-nice creatures that, naturally, were called demons. Previously holy spirits, went through some shit that made them not-so-holy, all that good stuff. They took control of the world pretty easily, considering people weren't the most advanced things around back then, and subjugated people into almost species-wide slavery. It was an incredibly unpleasant experience for everyone involved, to say the least.

This went on for a long time with little opposition. Occasionally, some bands of people with noble intentions sprung up and attempted to start rebellions, but since they lacked superpowers, they usually didn't last too long. But they did manage to do one thing, which was inspiring others to do the same. Humans on their own didn't really succeed at all, but eventually, a few of the demons in the hierarchy decided that they didn't have such a bad idea. Demons are jerks, after all. The ones who decided to join the humans in overthrowing the bad dudes not only helped fight in battles, they gave humans a nice gift. Abilities similar to, but not quite as potent as their own. Enhanced physical abilities and endurance were a given, along with a nice little bonus: absorbing more power from fallen demons.

Now that there were some people who could do pretty crazy things, the rebellion ended up going a hell of a lot better than it had before. The demons were defeated, but as a final act of 'screw you' to the humans that were kicking their crap in, they destroyed pretty much any progress that had been made past the early bronze age before they left. Their initial plans had been 'go to the underworld, get backup, return and break everything once we have it,' but that wasn't allowed to happen. The demons that had led the rebellion against them combined their power to make a sort of pocket dimension to contain them, between different layers of reality. It was effective, but slightly unstable: Every night at midnight, that world leaked into the real one, and battles continued.

Over time, the stability of that dimension increased, and while the shifts did still occur, they were no longer able to effect the real world. It essentially became a complete conversion instead of crossing over, so they were permanently trapped inside this realm. The humans that had been given the abilities were able to enter the world whenever the shifts occurred, to continue fighting them and quelling any attempts at escape. Of course, not every demon could be rounded up and stuffed into it, so they still existed in the human dimension. However, they were few in numbers, and cut off from a source of power, they were substantially weaker than they would be at their full potential. This allowed for experienced, but unpowered humans to fight them relatively fairly.

More time passed, and soon, attacks stopped altogether. Demons in the human world went into hiding, and the ones in the pocket dimension remained passive, no longer attacking the powered humans. It was a victory, and while it had taken a long time, it seemed complete. The powered humans gave up their abilities and continued their lives as normal people, and any non-hostile demons left over generally kept to themselves. Humans slowly rose to power, and have been at the top of the world for thousands of years.

Fast-forward to the modern day world, or maybe a few years in the future. Either works. The general idea is, technology's about at the level it is in the real world today. A great majority of people have no recollection of the enslavement and rebellion, mostly because all records of it were either destroyed or only remain as unfinished and incredibly vague scriptures that translate into broken nonsense. The world's moved on completely. Nobody other than a few historians has any idea about what happened, and even then, it's just scraps of writing that hardly fit together.

The thing is, the demons sealed in the alternate dimension haven't just sat around doing nothing for a few thousand years. While not really technological, they've made their own progress in that world. Buildings resembling gothic architecture dominate the landscape, and the more intelligent demons have come up with some sort of plan to try and retake the human world. Without any watchers, the stability of it has begun to weaken. Lowly demonic creatures that were born in their world have been tamed for use as living weapons, for when the seal inevitably breaks.

And now comes the fun part. At least one demon left over doesn't like the idea of this happening, and has given similar abilities to a few humans. Unfortunately, none of them were given any sort of briefing or explanation. To say the least, they're in for an unpleasant surprise when midnight comes next.

tl;dr: Demons ruled the ancient world like tyrants, enslaving humans. Human rebellions showed up and failed. Demons that disagreed with the treatment of humans gave some of them abilities to help their cause, and then fought with them. Demons were defeated, and destroyed any progress they brought to the human world. Demons were sealed in an alternate dimension that leaked into our world until it stabilized. Demons stopped showing up so much, and the humans given abilities gave said abilities up so they could live and die normally. Thousands of years pass until the world's in the modern day. The boundary between the alternate dimension and ours is weakening. A few people were selected seemingly at random to fill the roles of protectors, but they have little to no idea what the crap's happening for the first few trips into the other dimension.

    Any takers?

Alright, awesome! Sorry for the late response. I'll get a proper introduction finished and the OOC will be up either tonight or tomorrow. Until then, have a character sheet.

A quick question for you: would a hydra character be acceptable? They die if they lose their main head in hydra form and if a non-main head is cut off, they lose it forever. They can use their hydra powers in human form but they're severely weakened. They can be killed like normal humans.

@Larka: Sorry, that doesn't really fit with everything.

@Everyoneelse: I'm getting the OOC up now.
