From my own brief experience with long distance relationships (brief because I quickly realized they're retarded) and seeing others engage in them, there are two things done to compensate for the lack of physical proximity.
One is sickeningly effusive expressions of emotion, as if going over the top with the emotional side of things can make up for lacking the physical aspect. Most LDRs I've seen had the people gushing about how much they love each other all the fucking time after like a week of them e-dating. I'm talking over the top levels where if anyone were like that IRL they would immediately be dumped for being clingy and creepy, and then you'd probably want to get a restraining order on them as a preemptive measure against them trying to creeper stalk you and force you to love them. It's awful.
The second thing is the whole gamut of possible sexual activity that can be done between people not in the same room. Talking about sex and sexual preferences, sending dirty pictures, sexting, cybering or sexual roleplay (yes there's a difference) if the pair is down for that, phone sex, and webcam shows (either solo as a treat for the other or at the same time to make it like phone sex with a webcam upgrade). So yeah, there's a bunch of sex-related things that can be done without physical proximity.

Also, on one of Jorick's points; I never did that. For the most part, I don't even talk about whoever I happen to be dating, local or long distance. But that shit is annoying. With my boyfriend, basically we text each other every day, and Skype as often as we can. I actually drew a line at showing off anything like boobs or vaginas. He respects that. I love my boyfriend a lot, we've maintained this since October 1st, and we make it work. Bea's right. It is taking a lot of patience and maturity, and it's also helpful to know his best friend and have him spy on him to make sure he behaves. ;D
Also, Jorick, we don't gush over each other that much. I always text him good night and good morning, but we have normal conversations as well.

The reason I wouldn't do LDR (with the exception of him being deployed for the army, I would remain faithful) is because there's really no reason to be so far away, and I would like to have affection (not necessarily sexual). If there ever comes a time where one of us is to leave, why not take the other with you? If you can't... Then say you choose career over them, then they really aren't that special now, eh? I would be able to control myself if they had to be gone temporarily, for a short time. Having an on/off switch for my sexual urges does not allow me to comprehend how others "can't" control themselves. =/
