Yeah, I realize that. It just occurred to me as a point for very far in the future of the story (if it lasts that long). I mean, if I found something like that out, I'd be pretty freaking angry, and I might even want revenge.

I'm sure you would. You'd be an emotional, very human AI! I'd probably want revenge too. It's a dangerous gamble however, as their "consciousnesses" are stored in several computers, of which WG has immediate access to. (:O

Any wrong move and their entire world could be restarted.

Another difficulty... if this is a fantasy game... the AIs (ironically) don't know anything about computers, at least in the beginning, right? Even today's Computer Science would tough for most characters in a fantasy world, so the mathematical and technical understanding to even pull something like that off would be... difficult, to say the least.

But can they have ... I dont know, clues in the game? Maybe once in a while, a graphics bug causes an object to shimmer strangely. Or, what if they captured a Death God at some point? Or... would it be possible for human activist groups (idea occurs to me from a small part of the Truman Show) who believe that the AIs are sentient beings to attempt to "hack" the world and get a message to them? After all, it is a controversial issue (as pointed out by the court ruling).


Sorry, by the way... I'm just sort of brainstorming, getting potential ideas out in the open before I forget them.

You raise some points about the universe this is set in.

It is quite true that no AI in SYNTH is purposefully knowledgeable of computer science, or programming and code for that matter. Unless they somehow came to understand computers in a very detailed way, if given the chance to "hack" their own world they couldn't even do so.

There certainly are AI-Rights activist groups, though growing institutionalization of the SYNTH game in many countries has prevented large groups of people from comprehending the nature of the AI in SYNTH. After the court case deciding AI don't truly feel in any sense, many people dropped concerns over the ethics of using AI such as the ones made by Corona. Nevertheless, small bands still protest the game and its activities, as well as the use of other emotional AI to do man's bidding. They have attempted to enter SYNTH to hack it, some even being participants in SYNTH itself (a necessary evil).

I'll withhold further information on the subject, as it's an important factor in this roleplay that I'd rather the players discover later on.

More inside the SYNTH world... there would have to be some organized resistance to the Death Gods, using the conventional magic and abilities that they understand... If you have 24 years to prepare for an apocalypse, you would certainly spend time training yourself and others in magic to defend/hide/heal yourself... of course by doing that you become a higher target.

On the other hand, 24 years is rare enough (3-4 times in an average lifetime, assuming 75-100 years is around average)... that I imagine there would probably be some people who just accept their presence and live out their normal lives, hoping not to get in the way of the hurricane.

They aren't quite "apocalyptic" occurrences. They don't destroy entire cities or nations or anything like that. It is the fact that their power and training allows them to get away with many murders without capture, on most occasions. There have been several players who were captured and/or executed (and thus booted) by local law enforcement. Big targets, like well known knights, or royalty are common targets. During the days to prepare, security for such individuals is tightened to extremes, but players always find a way.

So to are low-class individuals killed; commoners, slaves, workers, merchants. If certain players target these types of AI for "more kills" rather than "better kills" then more are likely to die. It is generally these types of deaths that cause the most despair, because when they happen, they happen way more often. Almost all accept this way of life, but there are many who try their very best to kill the Death Gods before they have a chance to kill.

I may be interested. In a lot of ways, this remindes me of the .hack\sign series, which i was a big fan of. Looking through the posts, Inara has done a pretty good job asking questions i wanted to ask. haha. Anyway, ím interested and waiting to see an OOC.
